  • Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) strains responsible for recent outbreaks in the United States have been occurring in Mainland Korea since late 2013. Over the past 10 years, PEDV outbreaks have not been reported on Jeju Island. However, in late March of 2014, PEDV re-emerged on Jeju Island and was found to be genetically identical to PEDV strains currently circulating in Mainland Korea. The present study was conducted to provide a better understanding of the epidemiology of PEDV and more effective preventive measures against PED.

  • In accordance with the Carbon-Free Island by 2030 policy of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, renewable energy sources are increasing in Jejudo Island. Due to the intermittent output characteristics of wind turbines, one of the renewable energy sources, which can cause unbalanced system conditions between the demand load and the power generation of Jejudo Island. The Korea Power Exchange limits the output of wind turbines for stabilizing the Jeju power system. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to supply a limited output of Sangmyeong Wind Farm in Jeju Power system to Energy Storage System(ESS) and Water Electrolysis Device(WED). The voltage and frequency fluctuation of the Jeju power system is checked accordingly. The simulation results are performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC program.

  • The government on Jeju Special Self-governing Province has a policy named 'Carbon Free Island Jeju by 2030'. The main purpose in this policy is to install wind power system with the total capacity of 1.35 GW by 2020. When the demand load on Jeju Island power system is lower than entire output power, a lot of dump power will be produced from the large-scale wind farms. It will be able to cause the wind power limit on Jeju Island. Consequently, the additional power facility must be installed to ensure stable power system operation in Jeju Island and increase wind power limit. From this point, this paper proposes the installation of MMC-HVDC, which can supply power in real time in the desired direction. The effectiveness of MMC-HVDC based on measured data of Jeju Island power system will be verified by using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program.

  • Background: Humidifier disinfectant is a biocidal product used in the water tanks of humidifiers to prevent the growth of microorganisms. Although there are a huge number of cases of reported humidifier disinfectant-related health effects across the entire Korean population, their numbers are distributed differently depending on the region. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the regional distribution of enrollment cases who reported humidifier disinfectant-related health effects. Methods: This study used data on 6,240 subjects who experienced humidifier disinfectant-related health effects and who enrolled their cases which is conducted by the Korea Ministry of Environment. We examined the regional distribution of the enrolled cases based on sixteen administrative divisions and assessed the: 1) crude number; 2) proportional rate; and 3) age-standardized proportional rate of enrollment by region. Results: When we examined the crude number of enrollments by region, the highest number were in Gyeonggi-do Province (n=1,896), followed in order by Seoul (n=1,405), Incheon (n=436) Busan, Daegu, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Daejeon, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Jeollabuk-do Province, Gwangju, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, Gangwon-do Province, Jeollanam-do Province, Ulsan, and Jeju-do. When we examined proportional rate of the regional enrollment (cases per 100,000 population), Daejeon (n=16.2) was the region with the highest rate, followed in order by Gyeonggi-do Province (n=16.1), Incheon-do Province (n=15.9), Seoul, Daegu, Gwangju, Jeollabuk-do Province, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Busan, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, Gangwon-do Province, Gyeongsanbuk-do Province, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Ulsan, Jeju-do, and Jeollanam-do Province, which is inconsistent with the order in terms of crude numbers. However, when we examined the age-standardized proportional rate of regional enrollment (cases per 100,000 population), their ranked distribution is consistent with the crude rate. Conclusions: This study observed that the regional distribution of the enrolled cases who reported humidifier disinfectant-related health effects is inconsistent with the regional distribution of the proportional rate of enrollment cases, which may be caused in part by the volume of the inherent population of each region.

  • This study is to analyze the characteristics of golf course water usage using groundwater and rainwater data obtained from 17 golf courses in Jeju Island during 2007~2009. The groundwater usages were 246,275 $m^3/year$, 213,062 $m^3/year$, 155,235 $m^3/year$, and 126,666 $m^3/year$ in the west, south, east, and north regions, respectively. Monthly rate of the amount of groundwater usage to the amount of permission was 29.5%. The rainfall usages were 386,591 $m^3/year$, 326,464 $m^3/year$, 251,248 $m^3/year$, and 232,061 $m^3/year$ in the south, west, east, and north regions, respectively. Monthly rate of rainwater usage to the amount of water retention of golf courses was 19.6%. The average annual water usage in the 17 golf courses was 499,377 $m^3/year$. From the average usage, it was found that the rainwater usage (305,126 $m^3/year$ ) was 1.6 times higher than that of groundwater (194,251 $m^3/year$ ). That means the annual average rainwater usage to the entire water usage was 61.1%, which was above the criteria of 40%.

  • After the launch of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province in 2006, a number of real estate development projects were carried out; the real estate industry has relatively largely grown as compared with other regions since 2011. This growth has slowed down in 2017, along with the increase of unsold houses and the short of its incoming population, causing its real estate market recession. This study analyzed the source of real estate industry growth in Jeju: either affected by national growth power or its regional competitiveness. This study applied Shift-Share Analysis and Growth Differential Analysis, by dividing the recovery period ('06~'10) and expansion period ('11~'16). According to the result, sales amount and the number of employees in the real estate industry in Jeju had grown in the recovery period based on the national growth power. Its regional competitiveness and stable industrial structure grew in the growth period. Development and subdividing of real estate contributed to the growth of the real estate industry in Jeju. On the other hand, management of real estate weakened its market.
