The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) by analysing of relation between MACS and Jebsen-Talyor Hand Function Test. The concurrent validity was examined by calculation of correlation between MACS and Jabsen-Talyor Hand Function test and the discriminant validity was examined by measurement of hand function difference according to MACS level. For this, eighty-one children with spastic cerebral palsy were employed in this study. The children were evaluated by using the MACS and Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test for their hand function. There were a significant correlation between the MACS and Hand function (r = .870, p < .05). The good correlation between the MACS and subtest of Jabsen-Talyor Hand function (p < .05). The hand function according to the MACS level were different significantly (p < .05). The MACS is valid classification system for assessment of hand function of children with cerebral palsy. The MACS in practice will provide usefulness for assessment of hand function in children with spastic cerebral palsy.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to ob serve effects of CPM(Continuous Passive Motion) on hand functional and upper-extremity muscular strength rehabilitation for stroke patients. Method: Objects of this study, three patients have the symptoms of hemiplegia due to stroke. These are acute patients, within a 18 months after treatment and correspond in Brunnstrom stage 4~6. This study used single subject (A-B) design for three patients with a stroke and the effect of CPM was measured using Jebsen-Taylor hand function test, Purdue Pegboard test, hand muscular strength test. They received CPM for 3 weeks, 2 per day, 30 minutes for each, total 30 times. Results: Two patients' results of fingertip grip test in hand strength measurements did not change. This study investigatedwhether occupational therapeutic craft activity improves cognitive function and hand function in patients with acute stroke, with the hope of providing clinically useful results for further studies. From March 2016 to November 2016, thirty acute patients with stroke at A general hospital and B rehabilitation hospital in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Korea were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups. One group was treated with occupational therapeutic craft activity, and the other general exercise. The subjects performed each activity for 30 minutestwice weekly, for four weeks. To test the effect of intervention, hand function was tested with the Box & Block Test and the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test.Cognitive function measures were the NCSE and Trail-Making Test. Over the four weeks of treatment activities, in the occupational therapeutic craft activity group, hand function measures(p<.05) increased significantly,as did cognitive function measures(p<.05). This study shows that occupational therapeutic craft activity improves hand function and cognitive function effectively in patients with acute stroke. Occupational therapeutic craft activity programscan be based on this study to prepare intervention programs for further studies with acute stroke patients.
This study examined the effects of task-oriented occupational therapy without action observation training and action observation on hemiplegic patients' upper extremity functions and activities of daily living. The stroke patients were randomly and equally assigned to an experimental group (action observation) and a control group (task-oriented occupational therapy). They received the intervention five times per week, 30 minutes per each time, for five weeks. In order to look at upper extremity functions of the paretic side before and after the intervention, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT) and Box and Bock Test (BBT) were conducted and in order to compare activities of daily living, Korean-Version of Modified Barthel index (K-MBI) was examined. According to the results, upper extremity functions and activities of daily living in both groups increased and there was no difference between the two groups. Therefore, action observation and task-oriented occupational therapy had positive effects on stroke patients' upper extremity functions and activities of daily living.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of fidget spinner training on the hand function and handwriting legibility of lower grade elementary school studens. Methods : This study randomly assigned a study group of 12 children and control group of 12 children from 24 children in grade 1 and 2 (ages 7 through 8), whose are dominantly right handed. The study used was a pre-post process. The intervention was conducted only on the study group twice a week for 5 weeks and for 40 minutes per session, for a total of ten sessions. The measuring instruments used to compare the hand functions and handwriting legibility were the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test, Grip Strength Test, and Legibility Test. The data analysis used a Wilcoxon signed rank, Mann-Whitney U and Chi-Square cross analysis. Results : The fidget spinner training showed significant improvement in the study group's hand function(grip strength and handwriting legibility) and a significant difference was shown between the control and study groups. Conclusion : This study confirmed the value and utility of a fidget spinner as a tool for improving the hand function and handwriting legibility of elementary school students in lower grades. Future studies are expected to verify the effectiveness of the fidget spinner training based on the present study.
The effects of therapeutic instrumental music performance (TIMP) using a ukulele were examined in adults with central nervous system damage and impaired hand functions. The participants were three adults with neurological damage who participated in 30-min sessions twice a week over 6 weeks. Changes in hand function was measured by the Box and Block Test (BBT), the 9-Hole Peg Test (9-HPT), and the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT). Following the intervention, all three participants showed increases in the BBT and 9-HPT scores, indicating positive changes in fine motor coordination and dexterity. In terms of the JTHFT, all three participants showed increases in the "writing" and "card flipping" subtask scores, indicating that the intervention was effective in improving more coordinated finger movements. All participants reported the satisfaction with the intervention. They also pointed out that they were motivated to play the ukulele and that following the intervention used their affected hand more frequently in daily activities. These findings suggest that TIMP with a ukulele for patients with central nervous system damage can have positive effects on their functional hand movements and motivate these patients to practice their rehabilitation exercises.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of robot-assisted hand rehabilitation(Amadeo(R)) on hand motor function in chronic stroke patients. This study used a single-subject experimental design with multiple baselines across individuals. Three chronic stroke survivors with mild to sever motor impairment took part in study. Each participants had 2 weeks interval of starting intervention. Participants received robot-assisted therapy(45min/session. 3session/wk for 6wks). Finger active range of motion(AROM) was assessed by Range of Assessment program in Amadeo(R), and test-retest reliability was verified using Pearson correlation analysis. To investigate effect of Amadeo(R), finger AROM was measured immediately after each sessions and Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper extremity, Motor Activity Log, Nine hole peg board test and Jebsen-Taylor hand motor function test were assessed at pre-post intervention. Results were analyzed by visual analysis and comparison of pre-post tests. The test-retest reliability of Range of Assessment was good(r=.99). After robot-assisted therapy, finger AROM of participant 1, 2, and 3 was respectively improved by 18%, 3.6%, and 6% each. Hand motor function of participant 1, 3 was improved on all four tests, but not effect in participant 2. Robot-assisted hand rehabilitation could improve finger AROM and effect on hand motor function in chronic stroke patients.
