  • The oriental medicine based on the traditional Chinese medicine has developed characteristically according to the history and racial character respectively; China, Korea and Japan. Japan, among these nations, has accepted western medicine earlier than other nations and has tried to compare western and oriental medicine and combine them. In Japanese traditional medicine, it is characteristic that the old medical classics focusing on Sanghannon (傷寒論) and Geumgyeyoryak(金?要略) has developed The recent tendencies of clinical medicine and researches in Korean oriental medicine are mostly about the study of oriental medicine in view of western medicine and the combination of western and oriental medical treatment like Japan. But the study on the Japanese oriental medicine hasn't so far been tried before in Korea. From now on, we should not overlook that a more interest on Japanese oriental medicine will be very useful. Therefore we have surveyed the background of its origin and the process of development of the theory of ${\ulcorner}$Qi, Blood and Body Fluids${\lrcorner}$. What we wish to show in this paper is to provide a source for the basic understanding by explaining a fundamental theory of physiology and pathology of Japanese oriental medicine. Concepts of ${\ulcorner}$Qi, Blood and Body Fluids${\lrcorner}$ suggested by Nangai Yoshimashi in 1792 is the way of thinking that the circulation of 3 factors- ${\ulcorner}$Qi, Blood and Body Fluids${\lrcorner}$ nourish human body. Among these 3 factors, if Qi does not function smoothly, it causes the condition of a disease like Qi-deficiency, imbalance of Qi-distribution or Qi-depression and stasis; in Blood's case, deficiency of Blood and Blood stasis; and as for Body Fluids, stasis of Body Fluids. In the recent trend of study, there's a try to combining the western and oriental medicine, Qi is considered as psychoneurotic system, Blood as circulatory and endocrinologic system and Body Fluids as immunologic system.

  • This paper is based on the 36 wild Japanese quails which migrated to and settled in the Weishan Lake area. The gene frequency of 10 loci encoding the enzymes in viscera and muscle was detected. After collecting the same data about 20 quail colonies in China and other countries, it clusters the 21 quail populations by fuzzy cluster analysis. The study indicates that the wild Japanese quail in the Weishan Lake area is closer to domestic quail for phylogenetic system than wild Japanese quails in Japanese Islands. The paper supports the thesis that the quail domestication area should be further studied.

  • Natural habitat fragmentation and reducing habitat quality have resulted in an increased appearance of Japanese macaques, Macaca fuscata (Gray, 1870), in suburban areas in Japan. To investigate the risk of zoonotic infections, a coprological survey of helminth eggs passed by wild Japanese macaques was carried out in 2009 and 2010 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Microscopic examination found helminth eggs in high prevalence, and nucleotide sequencing of DNA extracted from the eggs identified Oesophagostomum cf. aculeatum and Trichuris trichiura. A fecal culture also detected infective larvae of Strongyloides fuelleborni. These zoonotic nematodes pose a potential health issue to local people in areas frequented by Japanese macaques.

  • Cross fertility between wild Japanese quail and domestic quail was explored in an experiment conducted on 18(3♂, 15♀)wild Japanese quails in Weishan Lake area, 18(3♂, 15♀)medium-sized domestic quails and 18(3♂, 15♀)pint-sized domestic quails, which were divided into nine groups. This study demonstrated that wild quail could succeed in crossing with domestic quail, producing fertilized eggs and hatching first filial generation. The findings indicated that there were no reproduction isolation between the wild Japanese quail and domestic quail, and that the best cross combination was between wild male quail and medium-sized domestic female quail, in which the fertility rate and hatchability of fertilized eggs amounted to 42.86% and 29.63% respectively. Based on the results, a new way could be adopted to protect, exploit and utilize genetic resources of wild quail.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility of applying Korea Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire(KS-15) for the Japanese. We analyzed the results of 50 Japanese participants who visited the local university hospital from October 2010 to July 2011 and their Sasang constitutions were diagnosed by a Sasang Constitutional specialist. Two items(14.3%) of total 14 items, except for BMI showed 0.4 or below in Kappa, 8 items(57.1%) were ranged from 0.4 to 0.6 and 4 items(28.6%) marked 0.6 or over. The concordance rate between the results of KS-15 and those of expert was 60% in total Japanese participants.(61.9% in Taeeumin, 60% in Soeumin, and 57.9% in Soyangin). The KS-15 could be suitable for supporting experts to diagnose the Sasang constitution of the Japanese. In order to increase usefulness, when subsequently applying KS-15 to foreign site, KS-15 should be properly adjusted in sociocultural characteristic.

  • This paper makes an analysis of the ecological behaviours of 3 categories of quails, namely wild Japanese quails from the Weishan Lake Area, medium-sized domestic quails and pint-sized domestic quails. The study indicates as follows: (1) There is difference in morphological and biological habits between domestic quails and wild Japanese ones. (2) The cross-breeding between the wild and domestic quails is a cross from exclusion to affinity. (3) The behaviours of quails such as pursuit, paw and mating are selective. (4) The wild Japanese quails and domestic ones can succeed in mating and in reproducing fertilized eggs but with a low rate. (5) Evolutionary differentiation has been formed in varying degrees between the domestic quails and their wild ancestors in morphological and ecological characteristics.

  • The aim of this study is to report clinical progresses on localized fat in three Japanese with Korean medicine. We conducted electro-acupuncture on thigh and/or Gamitaeyeumjowi-tang, all subjects had loss of thigh circumference and 2 subjects who took Gamitaeyeumjowi-tang had body weight loss. It shows that Korean medical treatments may be effective on localized obesity and can also apply to Japanese.

  • Objectives In this research, the constitutional diagnosis based on the theory of Sasang constitutions were carried out to Japanese subjects living in Japan, and the external applicability of Sasang constitutional medicine was evaluated by analyzing the physiological symptoms and the pathological symptoms according to their constitutions. Methods Total 144 Japanese subjects who live in S city were invited from Mar. 2010 to Jul. 2011 for the research, and their constitutions were analyzed with constitution diagnosing tool that was developed by Korean institution of oriental medicine (KIOM) in 2011. The collected data was analyzed in terms of the physiological symptoms and the pathological symptoms according to the sasang constitutions with computer software of SPSS 17.0. Results In the physiological symptoms related to excrements, Soyangin more frequently did not have excrements of gold color (p=.034) and feel the tenesmus (p=.047) than the subjects of other constitutions. In the physiological symptoms related to cold & heat, Soyangin more frequently felt cold in feet and hands (p=.011), and Soeumin more frequently didn't like drinking water regardless of thirst (p=.017). In the physiological symptoms, Soyangin frequently felt dryness in eyes, and Taeumin frequently felt uncomfortable because of the phlegm. Conclusions The theory of Sasang constitution which is a Korean traditional medicine can also be applied to the health care of Japanese, and it can contribute to the health promotion of Japanese subjects.

  • Japanese-B viral encephalitis (JE) usually has a monophasic illness pattern. A 45-year-old woman in an altered mentality had improved over 1 month. About 1 week after the initial improvement, the patient became comatose with aggravated EEG and MRI findings. Assays of cerebrospinal fluid and serum were positive for the IgM antibody to Japanese-B virus. After intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) infusion, the patient recovered. We report a patient with JE who showed a biphasic illness pattern and recovered after IVIG therapy.
