  • There are a few hundreds of Jaesil architectures in Andong area, Kyungbook Province. Among them, about 25 of them have elevated pavilion, while all the rest do not have. This paper focus on these jaesils with elevated pavilion, and tried to identify the different types among them, the background of the beginning of these jaesils, as well as eleveted pavilion. Five different types could be clarified, and they could be reinterpreted according to the background cause of the construction of these types. Three major background reasons for the construction of jaesils with elevated pavilion, seems to be: 1) necessity of such pavilion to be able to clomplete the system of Jaesil, 2) borrowing of temple structure where there is not large wooden floor, and 3) eclectic combination of pavilion and main hall (Gangdand 講堂). Such study helps us understand not only the jaesils with eleveted pavilion, but also the general jaesils without eleveted pavilion. The inclusion of eleveted pavilion has a lot to do with the symbolic expression of the family, use of large space for the family gathering, as well as the popular trends of pavilion architecture of the time.

  • Jogyeongdan is an altar built by the Korean Empire within the burial grounds of Sijomyo(始祖墓), the Jeonju Lee clan, as a part of their posthumous respecting project. This site adheres to strict rules and formalities that are comparable to those of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, with its altars and monument House demonstrating construction techniques that hold high value in architectural history. This study compares and analyzes construction-related records such as Uigwe, Statements, and Figure, along with their historical context. Through this effort, the study explores in detail the original form of Jogyeongdan at the time of its construction and subsequent transformations in later periods. Findings showed that the Figure was drawed by Chae Yongsin and was only a blueprint prior to the construction; it was modified during the actual construction process. A part of Jogyeongdan project was carried out by demolishing four government office buildings that were closed because of the Gabo Reform in order to secure wood and roof tiles, among other materials. Additionally, concluded the Jaesil was by relocated Deokryudang from Samryeyeokcham. Further, instances of distinctive terminology usage were found related to construction materials in the Jogyeongdan Uigwe, which were not used in another Uigwe. These terms were distinguished in detail according to the locations in which the materials were used.

  • Although the royal tomb keeper's house in the late Joseon period did not undergo dramatic changes, overall, the keeper's house of Yeong Mausoleum, the tomb of King Hyojong, and other royal tombs afterward showed the classification of its rooms according to their purpose and the expansion of its size. During King Yeongjo's reign, the tomb keeper's house tended to consist of Jaesil, Anhyangcheong, Jeonsacheong and Haenggak. The size and arragement pattern of the tomb keeper's house of Yeong Mausoleum were partially maintained in royal mausoleums constructed afterward. Especially Anhyangcheong was first established on the tomb keeper's house of Yeong Mausoleum and its architectural form was maintained until that of Ye Mausoleum, the tomb of King Cheoljong. The tomb keeper's house of Yeong mausoleum in Yeoju was constructed in 1659 and then moved in 1673 and 1674. In order to bury King Hyojong's wife with King Hyojong, the site of Yeong Mausoleum was moved twice with using almost all materials used for the initial tomb. In addition, as norms related to rites performed at royal tombs were created in the early 20th century, the tomb keeper's house of Yeong Mausoleum was selected as an exemplary tomb keeper's house representing the royal tomb keeper's house of the Joseon era, and it mostly coincides with its remaining arrangement pattern. Through records distributed in relatively similar periods, it is considered that most of the features fo royal tomb keeper's house in the Joseon period have been inherited until today and that Yeong Mausoleum has a very higher architectural status as an especially valuable tomb keeper's house among royal tomb keepr's houses in the Joseon era.

  • This article is to review the concepts of Confucian Utopia in Chosun Dynasty by looking into a sample of Daksil Village in Bongwha area. Here are some of the investigation. 1. The spatial composition entities of Daksil Village are both Confucian and Tao elements. 2. The whole views are made up by placing the Taoist View(gardens) into the Confucianist view(village and Seowon) and by placing the Confucianist view(summer house) into the Taoist view(Valley view of Seokcheonjeong). Two worlds are integrated into one by including each other. 3. According to the theory of geomancy(fang-shui), Daksil has the shape of ‘Geum-Gye-Po-Ran (Golden chicken embracing eggs)’, which is considered to be a land of fortune. Conclusively, Confucianists in Chosen Dynasty adopted fang-shui details when they built a residence, while they put much importance on Confucian and Tao elements. Moreover, it is found in the records that “It is a good place to start a village if there are mountains and water near the residence.” The fact that Daksil village is located at a day's distance from Seowon-Seokcheonjeongsa-Village-Jaesil-Grave proves that the residential village is set at an ideal place.

  • The grade of East Asian architecture is generally classified by the size, the shape of the roof, and the type of bracket set. The craftsmanship of columns, beam, purlin, stylobate, column base stone and paintwork is also a contributing factor for such classifications. These classifications can be found not only in historical documents such as 「Oksajo(屋舍條)」 of 『Samguksagi(三國史記)』 but also in 「house details regulations of residential architecture(家舍規制)」 of Joseon Dynasty. However, there are differences in detailed designs among the same grade of architecture regardless of the classification. In this research, the Palace, the Royal Residence(宮家), and the Jaesil(齋室) are considered as the Palatial Buildings and Royal Residences. And the advanced architectural o details which appear only in the Royal Architectures are defined as the 'The Architectural Crafts as a Code of Manners'. The Architectural Crafts as a Code of Manners is detailed design, which can be seen as fabrication of materials and supplementary factors. The Architectural Crafts as a Code of Manners used in the Palatial Buildings and Royal Residences reveal the types and their historical changes. This research will present a basis for the repair and restoration of cultural heritages to be carried out in the future, and also prevent them from further damages, thus help to preserve the cultural heritages.
