  • Purpose - Our study aimed to examine the roles of conflict management in maintaining a sustainable good relationship between joint venture (JV) partners. Although the concepts of relational capital, mutual commitment, and cultural adaptation have been neglected in previous research on interorganizational relationships, we treated them as inter-partner fit mechanism capabilities of affecting the level of satisfaction in a relationship with a JV partner. Design/methodology - In order to test hypotheses, we sent a questionnaire to Japanese firms operating JVs in South Korea and asked whether their levels of satisfaction with their JV partners increase when conflict management techniques are used to reduce the conflicts that usually arise between partners. Findings - The results of our study suggested that it is important for firms participating in a JV to construct and reinforce an inter-partner fit mechanism that enables them to maintain a favorable partnership. In addition, we suggested that relational capital, cultural adaptation, and mutual commitment influence conflict reduction and the level of satisfaction experienced in JVs. Moreover, the results showed that conflict management has a significant effect on developing soild partnerships and performance in JV situations. Originality/value - We advanced a new paradigm about conflict management and suggested methods of research propositions that are well grounded in the latest findings in conflict management research pertaining to JVs.

  • Learning has become an important aspect for any organization to stay relevant and competitive in the corporate world of survival. In construction industry, the international construction joint ventures (ICJVs) provide an excellent platform with opportunity of learning among partners seeking to develop new area of competency and improve their overall competitiveness for their next project endeavor. This paper discusses the development of a conceptual model of effective learning in ICJVs using four major stages of development in a typical joint venture (JV) 's process. The study identified that there are three key constructs that contribute to effective learning comprising learning conditions in the JV's pre-inception stage, success factors of JV for learning in the forming & organizing stage, and learning actions in the implementation & adjustment stage. The effective learning outcomes are measured by the characteristics of learning organization during the JV's completion & evaluation stage. Details and issues of each stage and the methodology of research will be presented and discussed.

  • This study examines the features of globalization process in GM and Hyundai Motors, especially in the expansion into China auto market, through a joint venture(hereafter JV) research center. Due to the large scale market in China and the 50:50 JV, the two companies had to respond in some way to the Chinese government's request for localization of research and development functions, and their response affected the role of the JV research center. Even though the improvement in technological capability expected from the JV by the Chinese side did not appear well in the early stage in both JV, but relatively the Shanghai GM JV research center had a technological progress compared to the Beijing Hyundai JV research center. This paper explains the differences in the technical capabilities of the two JV research center, despite the same type of JV, as the difference between the status of the Chinese partner and the global strategy of the parent company. SAIC, a Chinese partner in Shanghai GM as a top-tier company, not only has been strongly demanding technology transfer from GM since the beginning of the JV, but has also made efforts to improve its own technical capabilities. Meanwhile, BAIC, a Chines partner in Beijing Hyundai as a mid-tier company, has not been strongly demanding technology transfer and lacked its own research base. Regarding the parent company's global strategy, although both companies controlled the core areas of research and development by their parent companies, GM actively considered using the Chinese RV to develop Chinese and emerging country vehicles. On the other hand, Hyundai Motors responded to the localization demand of the Chinese government while paying more attention to preventing technology leakage through its independent research center in China. The above discussion shows that the process of globalization of a company is a political process in which the global strategy of the parent company and the demands of the stakeholders surrounding the subsidiary are collided and compromised, rather than a process in which the harmony and cooperation between the parent company and its subsidiaries are smoothly achieved as the parent company's policies are unilaterally implemented.

  • The JV method is an epochal civil engineering style that boasts of significant pile driving power through low-vibration works by ideally combining the high pressure water injected from the water jet cutter and the vibrations combining from the vibratory pile driver extractors. As a result, you are ensured stable and safe pile driving and extraction in bedrocks that were previously impossible with conventional machines and methods. The other advantage is its high performance and a low-pollution characteristis that is ensured by suppressing ground vibrations. This is a very important factor since it often becomes an issue upon civil engineering in the city. With the addition of this method. the range of steel pipe pile, steel sheet pile and other steel pile use has been drastically expanded. Other advantages of this method incldes accurate works, shortening of the construction period and improved work performance. Since the minimun amount of high pressure water is used to drill the ground, it not only loosens the ground, but also cuts the ground at the tip of the pile to improve driving works.

  • The filtration characteristics of H2O-C6H12O6 solution at cell membrane model in renal tubule which irradiated by high energy x-ray(linac 6MV) was investigated. The cell membrane model used in this experiment was a polysulfonated copolymerized membrane of m-phenylene-diamine(MPD) and trimesoyl chloride(TMC)-hexane. They were used to two cell membrane models(CM-1, CM-2). The cell membrane model composed of 0.5 wt% TMC-hexane solution(CM-2) had higher permeate flux(Jv) and rejection coefficient(R) than composed of 0.1 wt% TMC-hexane solution(CM-1). The permeate flux(Jv) and rejection coefficient(R) of H2O-C6H12O6 solution in two cell membrane models(CM-1, CM-2) were increased with increase of pressure drop and effective pressure difference. In this experiment range(pressure 1.5-4 MPa, temperature 36.5 ℃), permeate flux(Jv) of H2O solvent in irradiated membrane was found to be decreased about 20-30 times than non-irradiated membrane, permeate flux(Jv) and rejection coefficient(R) of H2O-C6H12O6 solution in irradiated membrane was found to be decreased about 2-13 times, about 4-6 times than non-irradiated membrane, respectively. The concentration increase of H2O-C6H12O6 solution at cell membrane model significantly was increased at rejection coefficient(R), was decreased at permeate flux(Jv). As the filtration of H2O-C6H12O6 solution in cell membrane model were abnormal, cell damages were appeared at cell.

  • Open innovation is a phenomenon that has been widely accepted by both practice and theory over the last few years. On the contrary, partner relationships have attracted little attention while the open innovation could not be emerged without the link to partners. This paper identifies and evaluates a framework for the partner relationships and open innovation processes. Based on the literatures regarding open innovation and partner relationships, we propose the framework of matrix type. We present results based on 352 open innovation cases reported during 2002-2009, and each case is classified into 5 different categories of the framework. JV-C(Joint Venture relationship & Coupled process) archetype has dominated the cases with 178 cases(50.6%) where JV-O(Joint Venture relationship & Outside-In process) follows JV-C with 124 cases(35.2%). No significant change has been found in the number of cases after 2003 when open innovation firstly suggested. However, the number sharply increases in 2009 by boom in JV-C and JV-O. These results show the importance of partner relationships and preference toward Joint Venture relationship in open innovation, while the conventional approaches has just focused on value-chain partnership. We find remarkable collaboration cases contributed by universities and government invested research centers, so the role of non-profit R&D organizations has also been discussed.

  • In this study, the main goal is conduct an empirical research for MNC's(multinational companies) contingency factors and entry modes. Through examining elements of success and limitations of foreign companies in the domestic market, a resulting purpose can be suggested such as developing attractive foreign investment policy. The results in this study are as below. The results from Logistic Regression Analysis there were indications for preference factors for WOS (Wholly Owned Subsidiary). The factors were 'Strategic Motivation', 'Intelligent Property', and 'Market Latent Purchasing Power'. For JV (Joint Venture) there were preferred factors such as 'Degree of Using Product Factors', 'Differential Products Development Ability', and 'Systematic Incentives'. However, this thesis is limited to identifying clear causal relationship between the 'Performance' of foreign investment enterprise which entered WOS or JV and various factors which were suggested in the contingency factors (independent variables).

  • Two bacteria strains were isolated from emaciated olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) in aquafarm and were identificated as Vibrio harveyi (JV1) and Edwardsiella tarda (JE1), respectively. In the challenge experiments, we found 100% cumulative mortalities in all of olive flounder injected with JV1, JE1 or JV1+JE1 within eleven days after the injection. Two bacteria strains were reisolated from dead fish and were analyzed using the PCR method. In the physilogical analysis, the hematocrit, AST, ALT and cholesterol levels in experimental groups were increased significantly compared to those in control group, but the glucose, total protein and triglyceride levels were significantly decreased. Additionally, the lysozyme activity in the blood serum was decreased. The histopathological observations of the intestine showed that all groups had detachment and destruction of epithelial tissues except for the control group.
