Today, it is imperative to educate students on how to best prepare themselves for the new data driven era of the future. Undergraduate education plays an important role in providing students with more Data Science opportunities and expanding the supply of Data Science talent. This paper surveys and analyzes the curricula of Data Science-related bachelor's degree programs in the United States. The 'required' and 'elective' courses in a curriculum for obtaining a B.S. degree were evaluated by course weight to indicate its necessity. As a result, it was possible to find out which courses were important in Data Science programs and which areas were emphasized for B.S. degrees in Data Science. We found that courses belong to the Data Science area, such as data management, data visualization, and data modeling, were more required for Data Science B.S. degrees in the United States.
Dependency parsing is a decision problem of the syntactic relation between words in a sentence. Recently, deep learning models are used for dependency parsing based on the word representations in a continuous vector space. However, it causes a mislabeled tagging problem for the proper nouns that rarely appear in the training corpus because it is difficult to express out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words in a continuous vector space. To solve the OOV problem in dependency parsing, we explored the proper noun embedding method according to the embedding unit. Before representing words in a continuous vector space, we replace the proper nouns with a special token and train them for the contextual features by using the multi-layer bidirectional LSTM. Two models of the syllable-based and morpheme-based unit are proposed for proper noun embedding and the performance of the dependency parsing is more improved in the ensemble model than each syllable and morpheme embedding model. The experimental results showed that our ensemble model improved 1.69%p in UAS and 2.17%p in LAS than the same arc-eager approach-based Malt parser.
Background: A presentation attack places the printed image or displayed video at the front of the sensor to deceive the biometric recognition system. Usually, presentation attackers steal a genuine user's biometric image and use it for presentation attack. In recent years, reconstruction attack and adversarial attack can generate high-quality fake images, and have high attack success rates. However, their attack rates degrade remarkably after image shooting. Methods: In order to comprehensively analyze the threat of presentation attack to palmprint recognition system, this paper makes six palmprint presentation attack datasets. The datasets were tested on texture coding-based recognition methods and deep learning-based recognition methods. Results and conclusion: The experimental results show that the presentation attack caused by the leakage of the original image has a high success rate and a great threat; while the success rates of reconstruction attack and adversarial attack decrease significantly.
The shortest path betweenness value of a node quantifies the amount of information passing through the node when all the pairs of nodes in the network exchange information in full capacity measured by the number of the shortest paths between the pairs assuming that the information travels in the shortest paths. It is calculated as the cumulative of the fractions of the number of shortest paths between the node pairs over how many of them actually pass through the node of interest. It's possible for a node to have zero or underrated betweenness value while sitting just next to the giant flow of information. These nodes may have a significant influence on the network when the normal flow of information is disrupted. We propose a betweenness centrality measure called collective betweenness that takes into account the surroundings of a node. We will compare our measure with other centrality metrics and show some applications of it.
Instructional contents are used to demonstrate a technical process to teach and walkthrough certain procedures to carry out a task. This type of informational content is widely used for teaching and lectures in form of tutorial videos and training videos. Since there are questions and uncertainties for what could be the killer application for the novel wearables, we propose a self-instruction training application on a smart glass to utilize already-available instruction videos as well as public open data in creative ways. We design and implement a prototype application to help users train by wearing smart glasses specifically designed for two concrete and hand-constrained use cases where the user's hands need to be free to operate. To increase the efficiency and feasibility of the self-instruction training, we contribute to the development of a wearable killer application by integrating a voice-based user interface using speech recognizer, public open data APIs, and timestamp-based procedural content navigation structure into our proof-of-concept application.
One bottleneck of Bengali to Hindi transfer based machine translation system is the translation of suffixes of noun. The appropriate translation of a nominal suffix often depends on the semantic role of the corresponding noun chunk in the sentence. With the availability of a high performance Bengali morphological analyzer and a basic Bengali parser it is possible to identify the role of each noun chunk. This information may be used for building rules for translating the ambiguous nominal suffixes. As there are some similarities between the uses of Bengali and Hindi nominal suffixes we find that the rules may be identified by linguistically analyzing corpus data. In this paper, we identify rules for the ambiguous four Bengali nominal suffixes from corpus data and evaluate their performances. This set of rules is able to resolve a majority of the nominal suffix ambiguities in Bengali to Hindi transfer based machine translation system. Using the rules, we are able to translate 98.17% Bengali nouns correctly which is much better than the baseline ILMT system's accuracy of 62.8%.
Image-based 3D object detection is one of the important and difficult problems in autonomous driving and robotics, and aims to find and represent the location, dimension and orientation of the object of interest. It generates three dimensional (3D) bounding boxes with only 2D images obtained from cameras, so there is no need for devices that provide accurate depth information such as LiDAR or Radar. Image-based methods can be divided into three main categories: monocular, stereo, and multi-view 3D object detection. In this paper, we investigate the recent state-of-the-art models of the above three categories. In the multi-view 3D object detection, which appeared together with the release of the new benchmark datasets, NuScenes and Waymo, we discuss the differences from the existing monocular and stereo methods. Also, we analyze their performance and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of them. Finally, we conclude the remaining challenges and a future direction in this field.
Industrial IoT applications, including smart factories, require two problem-solving to build data monitoring systems required by services from distributed IoT sensors (smart sensors). One is to overcome proprietary protocols, data formats, and hardware differences and to uniquely identify and connect IoT sensors, and the other is to overcome the problem of changing the server-side data storage structure and sensor data transmission format according to the addition or change of service or IoT sensors. The IEEE 1451.4 standard-based or IPMI specification-based smart sensor technology supports the development of plug-and-play sensors that solve the first problem. However, there is a lack of research that requires a second problem-solving, which requires support for the plug-in of IoT sensors into remote services. To propose a solution for the integration of these two problem-solving, we present a IoT sensor platform, a service system architecture, and a service plugin protocol for the MQTT-based IIoT application environment.
Recent advances in Internet-of-Things and wearable computing have established computationally sufficient infrastructure to remove the barriers of physical locations. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of remote collaboration, work-from-home, teleconferencing, online education, digital twin, and metaverse enriched with various configurations of augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, and extended reality. Beyond specialized niche wearable applications in the medical and entertainment domains, we aim to identify the underlying characteristics of smartglass-enabled killer applications for everyday use. In this paper, we analyze intermediary roles in remote collaboration consisting of authoritative supervisors, synergetic collaborators, and speculative explorers. We also propose technical components for smartglass-assisted interactive remote collaboration composed of personal tracking, teleconference, and interaction components. More specifically, the application tasks of each intermediary role and objectives of three functional components are defined and elaborated.
This study discovered the effects of strategic learning and network building on a company's environmental management performance. According to the results, the environmental awareness of the company and competition threats within the industry did not significantly affect the establishment of environmental strategy, whereas the consumer's sensitivity to the environment and the environmental regulation of the government did. The environmental awareness of the company and the consumer's sensitivity to the environment were found to greatly impact a company's network building. which is closely related with the utilization of multimedia system and technology. In addition, it was found that the establishment of corporate environmental strategy had a significant effect on network building and strategic learning, but network building did not significantly affect strategic learning, indicating a difference. Finally, corporate strategic learning affected environmental management performance, suggesting an importance in accumulating strategic learning capabilities to increase environmental management performance.
