  • During the $2^{nd}$ JVET (Joint Group on Future Video Coding Technology Exploration) meeting, up to 22 coding tools focusing on Future Video Coding (FVC) were proposed. Despite that the application of proposed coding tools has a considerable performance enhancement, however, the encoding time of Joint Exploration Model (JEM) software is over 20 times for All Intra coding mode, 6 times for Random Access coding mode, of HEVC reference model (HM), and decoding time is 1.6 times for All Intra coding mode, 7.9 times for Random Access coding mode, of HM. This paper focuses on analyzing the complexity of the JEM software compared with HM.

  • HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) 보다 뛰어난 압축 성능을 갖는 차세대 비디오 부호화 표준 후보 기술에 대한 탐색과 검증을 진행한 JVET(Joint Video Exploration Team)은 기술 검증을 위한 참조 SW 코덱인 JEM(Joint Exploration Model)을 공개하였다.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for adaptive loop filter (ALF) complexity reduction in the decoding process. In the original ALF algorithm, filtering for I frames is performed in the frame unit, and thus, all of the pixels in a frame are filtered if the current frame is an I frame. The proposed algorithm is designed on top of the local gradient calculation. On both the encoder side and the decoder side, homogeneous areas are checked and skipped in the filtering process, and the filter coefficient calculation is only performed in the inhomogeneous areas. The proposed algorithm is implemented in Joint Exploration Model (JEM) version 3.0 future video coding reference software. The proposed algorithm is applied for frame-level filtering and intra configuration. Compared with the JEM 3.0 anchor, the proposed algorithm has 0.31%, 0.76% and 0.73% bit rate loss for luma (Y) and chroma (U and V), respectively, with about an 8% decrease in decoding time.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm to speed up block structure partition of quad tree plus binary tree (QTBT) in Joint Exploration Test Model (JEM) encoder. The proposed fast encoding of QTBT block partition employs three spatially neighbor coded blocks, such as left, top-left, and top of current block, to early terminate QTBT block structure pruning. The propose algorithm is organized based on statistical similarity of those spatially neighboring blocks, such as block depths and coded block types, which are coded with overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) and adaptive multi transform (AMT). The experimental results demonstrate about 30% encoding time reduction with 1.3% BD-rate loss on average compared to the anchor JEM-7.1 software under random access configuration.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is used to provide reliable information about the structure's integrity in near realtime following extreme incidents such as earthquakes, considering the inevitable aging and degradation that occurs in operating environments. This paper experimentally investigates an integrated wireless sensor network (Wi-SN) based monitoring technique for damage detection in concrete structures. An effective SHM technique can be used to detect potential structural damage based on post-earthquake data. Two novel methods are proposed for damage detection in reinforced concrete (RC) building structures including: (i) Jerk Energy Method (JEM), which is based on time-domain analysis, and (ii) Modal Contributing Parameter (MCP), which is based on frequency-domain analysis. Wireless accelerometer sensors are installed at each story level to monitor the dynamic responses from the building structure. Prior knowledge of the initial state (immediately after construction) of the structure is not required in these methods. Proposed methods only use responses recorded during ambient vibration state (i.e., operational state) to estimate the damage index. Herein, the experimental studies serve as an illustration of the procedures. In particular, (i) a 3-story shear-type steel frame model is analyzed for several damage scenarios and (ii) 2-story RC scaled down (at 1/6th) building models, simulated and verified under experimental tests on a shaking table. As a result, in addition to the usual benefits like system adaptability, and cost-effectiveness, the proposed sensing system does not require a cluster of sensors. The spatial information in the real-time recorded data is used in global damage identification stage of SHM. Whereas in next stage of SHM, the damage is detected at the story level. Experimental results also show the efficiency and superior performance of the proposed measuring techniques.
