In this paper, articles in full body of JEER in Korea and JEE in U.S. were classified into two categories- Research area and Key words-to endeavor a comparative study of the engineering education research(EER) topics and their temporal changes. In the recent 4 year term, 'Accreditation of Engineering Education' and 'Courses & Curriculum' were the most common key words appearing in JEER and 'Researches on EER' and 'Learner's Factor' in JEE. If we put curriculum/teaching materials/teaching as the input elements and learning/assessment as the output elements for education achievement, JEE demonstrates that many of the research topics have shifted from input to output in the recent years, while JEER research is in the transient stage.
This paper is a basic study of college of engineering freshmen's adaptation to college life, and the relationship between sub-variables of academic self-efficacy, learning immersion, and academic curiosity is analyzed. And based on the results, a plan to support new students of the College of engineering is suggested.
Capstone design education is essential in the engineering design process according to the certification standards of ABEEK. Capstone design process should be properly trained in undergraduate courses in order to increase the design ability of systems, components and processes within realistic constraints. In this study, a modified design model as a capstone design education model was proposed to reduce the separation between the design process at industrial sites and the design process at university education. The modified design model based on 6-sigma methodology is composed of 6 design steps such as define, measure, analyse, design, verify, and report. Each step has appropriated design contents and tools, and is configured to generate design results. The proposed design model was directly applied to the capstone design class for automotive engineering in Kunsan National University, and it was confirmed that the proposed DMADVR methodology was a very useful design education model to enhance the design ability, teamwork ability and communication skills required by ABEEK.
This study examined the differential effects of High-Impact Practices(HIPs) on the career aspiration of STEM college students by gender. Through the theoretical lens of Social Cognitive Career Theory(SCCT), a two-level model analysis was conducted. A sample of 2,101 third- and fourth-year undergraduate students majoring in STEM at 38 universities, which had been collected from the National Survey on College Student Experiences and Learning Outcomes funded by the Korea Research Foundation, was used. This study found that the three HIP domains(learning with peers, faculty support, content relevancy) had different influences depending on gender. These findings suggest that HIPs can benefit the development of female students' career aspiration and have gender-differential effects on students in STEM majors. Based on those findings, this study also deduced implications about the roles of faculty members and higher-education institutions that might foster the retention of women in STEM.
This study aims to find the major creative ideation patterns embedded in the commercially valuable patents in the mobile communication industry. For the purpose, we analyze 171 cases of the patent infringement lawsuit filed by Nokia in the United States. It is examined that what kind of TRIZ inventive principles and SIT thinking tools were applied to resolve technical contractions in each of the 171 cases respectively. Among the 40 inventive principles of TRIZ, 'feedback' principle was used mostly and 'division' principle the next. Among the 5 thinking tools of SIT, 'attribute dependency' mostly used, and 'division' the next. This suggests that what kind of inventive principles or thinking tools should be considered preferentially to resolve technical contradictions in practically important technical problems in the mobile communication industry.
This study was conducted using the literature review and survey research to analyze the operational status and effectiveness of the single-track accredited program, which has been mandatory since 2016. The research targets to achieve the purpose of the study were the nationwide engineering education accreditation system operating colleges, departments, and engineering education innovation centers. Finally, 183 copies were collected from faculty members at 69 colleges and 554 copies at the department level. As a result of the survey, the college recognized more positively about the operation of the single-track accredited program, and more than 50% of respondents said that there were difficulties due to the operation of the system. The contents required were analyzed and presented. Based on this, the engineering education accreditation system, including the single-track accredited program, suggested the direction of support at the government level and the ABEEK level to better settle down in the field of engineering colleges.
This study aims to investigate the effect of college choice factors on withdrawal intention of first-year undergraduates in STEM majors. The data for this study were collected from a national sample of 4-year institutions that participated in Collegiate Longitudinal Study funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea during 2013-2014. The data included 1,484 students in STEM majors from 30 institutions, and this study used bivariate and multivariate analytic methods to answer the research questions. This study found that while the internal dimensions of college choice showed a negative effect on the intention to dropout, external dimensions of college choice such as college environment, financial accessibility, admission possibility had a positive effect on the intention. The findings indicate that it is necessary to pay attention to college choice for enrollment management to prevent first-year undergraduates in STEM majors from dropping out.
The purpose of this study is to develop the self-reported measurement for engineering design competency. In this study, engineering design competency is defined as the overall individual ability that is necessary for an engineer for his/her successful accomplishment of engineering design. This measurement was developed through reviewing documents, defining factor and sub-factor, making an item and constructing validity verification. The self-reported measurement for engineering design competency consists of 6 factors and 40 items. 6 factors cover competency of design performance, competency of considering economic and social influence, competency of utilizing mathematical and scientific knowledge, competency of teamwork, competency of design-centered thinking and competency of collecting and using data. A 6-points Likert scale was used for each item.
The purpose of this study is to develop capstone design model of gender analysis methods suitable for engineering education field and examine improvements and effects by applying it to actual lessons for biomedical engineering students. Case study was performed to achieve the purpose of the study. Twelve gender analysis methods were applied to 'biomedical engineering capstone design' which was major course offered by department of biomedical engineering at J university. After the students understood how to analyze gender analysis methods and cases, they decided project topics and presented what gender analysis methods were applied for each project. Additionally, the results of analysis showed that the students were more able to understand the differences between men and women of all ages and try to narrow down the differences. They also found that they could contribute to development of new added value of knowledge and technology that reflected the needs of both men and women by applying gender analysis methods in system development.
Key objective of cornerstone design is that students are able to experience developing creative design concepts through team activities, but the objective is hard to achieve. Based on a study of research materials, this paper asserts that the possibilities of creative problem solving can be promoted in question-centering ideation model if design artifacts are represented in some forms that could invoke design thinking and then the solution space is appropriately established. In particular, design problem on which divergent questions are asked should be explored and defined so that it can be a linguistic artifact represented by various visual aids. It is recommended that curriculum is modified so that students can experience creative conceptual design.
