  • The behaviors of acoustic emission emitted in the tests of the fracture toughness and fracture stability are observed by using the specimens of aluminum 2024-T351 and 7039-T6 alloys. The empirical eqution of J-R curve is derived. It is demonstrated from the comparison of the fracture toughness obtained from J-R curve with that from ASTM standard E813-81 that the latter is larger than the former. The discontinuous point in the log-log graph of J-integral vs. total acoustic emission count is observed in between the two offset lines referred from ASTM standard E813-81, but it's physical meaning is uncretain. An empirical material tearing modulus is derived in terms of the total acoustic emission count and proved to be valid in fracture instability test.

  • The function, which represents the closed curve, is found from the sampling data by S-System in this study. Two methods are proposed. One is the extension of S-System. The data x and y are regarded as input data, and the data z=0 as output data. To avoid the trap into the invalid function, the judgment points (x$\_$j/, y/sug j/) are introduced. They are arranged in the inside and the outside of the closed curve. By introducing this concept, the functions representing closed curve are found by S-System. This method is simple because of a little extension of S-System. It is, however, difficult for the method to find the complex function like a hand-written curve. Then another method is also proposed. It uses the system incorporating the argument function. The closed curve can be expressed by the argument function. The relatively complex function, which represents the closed curve like a hand-written curve, is found by utilizing argument function.

  • The elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) and fracture resistance (J-R curve) of SA508-3 alloy steel used for nuclear reactor pressure vessel are investigated by using CT-type specimens. Fracture toughness tests are conducted by unloading compliance method and multiple specimen method at room temperature, -2$0^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$. The apparent negative crack growth phenomenon which usually arises in partial unloading compliance test is well known. The negative crack growth phenomenon in determining J sub(IC) or J-R cure from partial unloading compliance experiments may be eliminated by the offset technique. In this study, the evaluation of $J_{IC}$ multiple specimen method recommended by the JSME gives the most reliable results by using half-size CT(similar-type) specimens.

  • It often occurs in J-R testing that some initial crack extension (.DELTA.a) data points have anomalous negative values. The reason for the apparent negative crack growth is due to the analysis method. The phenomenon as a possible source of error in determining $J_{IC}$ or J-R curve from partial unloading compliance experiments may be eliminated by the compliance correction equation or the offset technique. In this study, the correction methods are suggested and examined by the measurement of the actual crack length and $J_{JC}$ analysis.

  • In order to analyze the elastic-plastic fracture behavior of a structure, the fracture resistance curve of the material should be known first. The standard CT specimen was used to obtain the fracture resistance curves of a piping system. However, it is known that the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen is very conservative to evaluate the integrity of a structure. Also the fracture resistance curve is effected by the specimen geometry and the dimensions because of the constraint effect. The objective of this paper is to be certain the conservativeness of the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen and to provide an additional safety margin. For these, the fracture tests using a real pipe specimen and the standard CT specimen test were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the pipe test. Also finite element analyses were performed with a CT specimen and a pipe in order to prove the additional safety margin. From the result of tests and analyses of the pipe and the standard CT specimen, it was observed that the fracture analysis with the standard CT specimen is conservative and the additional safety margin was proved.

  • In this paper, we developed an algorithm of generating cam contour curve for hinge mechanism of folder-type mobile phone. The main feature of this hinge mechanism is that we can operate uniform torque to open or close the mobile phone. We divided the opening or closing intervals of the cam into finite sub-intervals, and then we determined the cam contour curve of each sub-interval as a parabolic curve. Finally, these finite parabolic curves form the total cam contour. We can design single cam, which composed moving cam with contour curve and fixed cam that plays only roller, and twin cam with contour curve that is made up the pair of two cams symmetrically.

  • In order to operate an RPV safely it is necessary to keep the pressure-temperature (P-T) limit during the heatup and cooldown process. While the ASME Code provides the P-T limit curve for safe operation, this limit curve has been prepared under conservative assumptions In this paper the effects of conservative assumptions involved in the P-T limit curve specified in the ASME Code Sec. XI were investigated. Three different parameters the crack depth the cladding thickness and the cooling rate, were reviewed based on 3-D finite element analyses. Also the constraint effect on P-T limit curve generation was investigated based on J- T approach. It was shown that the crack depth and the constraint effect change the safe region in P-T limit curve significantly Therefore it is recommended to prepare a more precise P-T limit curve based on finite element analysis to obtain P-T limit for safe operation of an RPV.

  • In order to perform leak-before-break design of nuclear piping systems and integrity evaluation of reactor vessels, full stress-strain curves and fracture resistance(J-R) curves are required. However it is time-consuming and expensive to obtain J-R curves experimentally. To resolve these problems, three different methods for predicting J-R curves from tensile data were proposed by the authors previously. The objective of this paper is to develop a computer program based on those J-R curve prediction methods. The program consists of two major parts ; the main program part for the J-R curve prediction and the database part. Several case studies were performed to verify the program, and it was shown that the predicted results were, in general, in good agreement with the experimental ones.

  • An iteration method has been developed for determining crack growth and fracture resistance cure (J-R curve) from the load versus load-line displacement record only. In this method, the hardening curve, the load versus displacement curve at a given crack length, is assumed to be a power-law function, where the exponent varies with the crack length. The exponent is determined by an iterative calculation method with the assumption that the exponent varies linearly with the load-line displacement. The proposed method was applied to the static J-R tests using compact tension(CT) specimens, a three-point bend (TPB) specimen, and a cracked round bar (CRB) specimen as well as it was applied to the quasi-dynamic J-R tests using CT specimens. The J-R curves determined by the proposed method were compared with those obtained by the conventional testing methodologies. The results showed that the J-R curves could be determined directly by the proposed iteration method with sufficient accuracy in the specimens from SA508, SA533, and SA516 pressure vessel steels and SA312 Type 347 stainless steel.

  • Fracture resistance (J-R) curves, which are used for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analyses, decreased under tension-compression loading condition. This phenomenon was proved by several former researches, but the causes have not been clear yet. The objective of this paper is to investigate the cause of this phenomenon. On the basis of fracture resistance curve test results, strain hardening hypothesis, stress redistribution hypothesis and crack opening hypothesis were built. In this study, hardness tests, Automated Ball Indentation(ABI) tests, theoretical stress field analyses, and crack opening analyses were performed to prove the hypotheses. From this study, strain-hardening of material, generation of tensile residual stress at crack tip, and crack opening effects are proved as the causes of the decrease hypothesis.
