An energy based crack growth model is developed in this study to simulate the propagation of top-down cracking in asphalt pavements. A viscoelastic fracture mechanics approach, generalized J integral, is employed to model the crack growth of asphalt concrete. Laboratory fatigue crack propagation tests for three different asphalt mixtures are performed at various load levels, frequencies and temperatures. Disk-shaped specimens with a proper loading fixture and crack growth monitoring system are selected for the tests. It is observed from the tests that the crack propagation model based on the generalized J integral is independent of load levels and frequencies, while the traditional Paris' law model based on stress intensity factor is dependent of loading frequencies. However, both models are unable to take care of the temperature dependence of the mixtures. The fatigue crack propagation model proposed in this study has a good agreement between experimental and predicted crack growth lives, which implies that the energy based J integral could be a better parameter to describe fatigue crack propagation of viscoelastic materials such as asphalt mixtures.
This article deals with the numerical analysis results of stiffness of diaphragm spring used in the clutch of a manual transmission. In order to investigate the relationship of the force and displacement in a diaphragm spring, we have established a numerical model of diaphragm spring using a well-known analytic model of Belleville spring and a cantilever beam model for the finger part of diaphragm spring. Using the stress and strain relations of Belleville spring and cantilever beam, we propose the analytic equation of motion of diaphragm spring for the use of a clutch automated actuator in an automated manual transmission. The proposed analytic model represents the typical dynamic characteristics of diaphragm spring along with the release bearing travel. And it is characterized in a closed-form equation, therefore it can be used for the further study of development of actuator and control law of clutch automating mechanism.
Kinetic parameters for the texture degradation of three varieties of sweet potato during heating were determined using two alternative methods, the biphasic model and the fractional conversion method. The texture degradation of sweet potatoes during heating could be expressed by two simultaneous first order reactions using the biphasic method, whose activation energies were ranged $71.0{\sim}75.1\;kJ/mol\;and\;48.4{\sim}59.6\;kJ/mol$ for the initial fast texture degradation reaction and the slow texture degradation reaction at a prolonged heating period, respectively. However, the whole texture degradation phenomena of sweet potatoes during heating could also be explained by a single first order reaction using the fractional conversion method. The activation energies were $67.5{\sim}75.3\;kJ/mol$, which were comparable with those of the first phase reaction for the texture degradation determined by the biphasic model. A kinetic compensation effect shown between the kinetic parameters determined by both methods indicates that both methods can be conveniently used to determine kinetic parameters for the texture degradation of sweet potatoes by heating.
Soil moisture, through its dominance in the exchange of energy and moisture between the land and atmosphere, plays a crucial role in influencing atmospheric circulation. To identify the crucial role, it is a common agreement that knowledge of land surface processes and development of remote sensing techniques are of great important scientific issues. This research uses TRMM satellite C band (10.65 GHz) data to retrieve soil moisture on the Tibetan Plateau in Mainland China. Two retrieval schemes that are implemented include the t-(J) model and the R model. The latter one is developed based on a land surface process and radiobrightness (R) model for bare soil and vegetated terrain. Compared with the in situ ground measurements, the soil moisture retrieved from the R model and the t-(J) model with vegetation information obviously appear more accurate than that derived from bare soil model. Retrieved soil moisture contents from the two inversion models, R model and t-(J) model, have a similar trend, but the former appears to be superior in terms of correlation coefficient and bias compared with in situ data. In the future, we will apply the R model with the TRMM 10.65 GHz brightness temperature to monitor long-term soil moisture variation over Tibet Plateau.

This paper describes a probabilistic annual congestion cost assessment of a grid at a composite power system derived from a model. This probabilistic congestion cost assessment simulation model includes capacity limitation and uncertainties of the generators and transmission lines. In this paper, the proposed probabilistic congestion cost assessment model is focused on an annualized simulation methodology for solving long-term grid expansion planning issues. It emphasizes the questions of "how should the uncertainties of system elements (generators, lines and transformers, etc.) be considered for annual congestion cost assessment from the macro economic view point"? This simulation methodology comes essentially from a probabilistic production cost simulation model of composite power systems. This type of model comes from a nodal equivalent load duration curve based on a new effective load model at load points. The characteristics and effectiveness of this new simulation model are illustrated by several case studies of a test system.

In order to evaluate the integrity of nuclear power plant components, the analysis based on fracture mechanics is crucial. For this purpose, finite element method is popularly used to obtain J-integral. However, it is time consuming to design the finite element model of a cracked structure. Also, the J-integral should be verified by alternative methods since it may differ depending on the calculation method. The objective of this paper is to develop a three-dimensional elastic-plastic J-integral analysis system which is named as EPAS program. The EPAS program consists of an automatic mesh generator for a through-wall crack and a surface crack, a solver based on ABAQUS program, and a J-integral calculation program which provides DI (Domain Integral) and EDI (Equivalent Domain Integral) based J-integral calculation. Using the EPAS program, an optimized finite element model for a cracked structure can be generated and corresponding J-integral can be obtained subsequently.
In this work we present the results of light curve analysis for two cataclysmic variables detected recently in the SDSS project: SDSS J090350.73+330036.1 and J150240.98+333423.9. Photometric observations of the first were obtained during a superoutburst in May 2010. Our observations clearly indicate the presence of superhumps in the light curves, suggesting SDSS J090350.73+330036.1 is an SU UMa dwarf nova. We determined the period of the superhumps. We also carried out fitting using a spiral-arm model in order to determine parameters of the accretion disk, hot line, and other components of this system. Photometric observations of the second, J150240.98+333423.9, were obtained during the post-maximum decline, during April-June 2012. Photometric variability of this system has been studied in an inactive state. We obtained its parameters via a combined model fitted to the observed light curves by ${\chi}^2$ minimization.

Existing CAD systems have configured geometry data and it is necessary to extend the configured geometry into a knowledge-based system. An intelligent CAD system emerged to provide such a knowledge-based system. However the intelligent CAD system has a limited product model to represent various knowledge models. This paper presents a model, called extended intelligent CAD model, which can extend the product model of the intelligent CAD system into further detailed knowledge model. The extended intelligent CAD model includes a whole design process knowledge and an efficiency of the model has been verified via a knowledge based wiper design system. The model can improve the functionality and efficiency of the existing CAD systems.
In this paper, we propose a new model with the common Control Rod Control System which can be applied to both Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant model and Westinghouse model. The common model classified by one control rod assembly can solve the common-mode failure. We digitalize the new model and make existing analog models simplified.

P-version finite element model for the computation of stress intensity factors in two dimensional cracked panels by J-integral method is presented. The proposed model is based on high order theory and hierarchical shape function. The displacements fields are defined by integrals of Legendre polynomials which can be classified into three part such as basic mode, side mode, integral mode. The stress intensity factors are computed by J-integral method. The example models for validating the proposed p-version model are centrally cracked panel, single and double edged crack in a rectangular panel under pure Mode I. And the analysis results are compared with those by the h-version of FEM and empirical solutions in literatures. Very good agreement with the existing solution are shown.
