Many novel materials exhibit a property of different elastic moduli in tension and compression. One such material is graphene, a wonder material, which has the highest strength yet measured. Investigations on buckling problems for structures with different moduli are scarce. To address this new problem, firstly, the nondimensional expression of the relation between offset of neutral axis and deflection curve is derived based on the phased integration method, and then using the energy method, load-deflection relation of the rod is determined; Secondly, based on the improved constitutive model for different moduli, large deformation finite element formulations are developed and combined with the arc-length method, finite element iterative program for rods with different moduli is established to obtain buckling critical loads; Thirdly, material mechanical properties tests of graphite, which is the raw material of graphene, are performed to measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli, moreover, buckling tests are also conducted to investigate the buckling behavior of this kind of graphite rod. By comparing the calculation results of the energy method and finite element method with those of laboratory tests, the analytical model and finite element numerical model are demonstrated to be accurate and reliable. The results show that it may lead to unsafe results if the classic theory was still adopted to determine the buckling loads of those rods composed of a material having different moduli. The proposed models could provide a novel approach for further investigation of non-linear mechanical behavior for other structures with different moduli.

We present a new unified analytical front surface potential model, which can accurately describe the transitions between the partially-depleted (PD) and the fully-depleted (FD) regimes with an analytical expression for the critical voltage V$_{c}$ delineating the PD and the FD region. It is valid in all regions of operation (from the sub -threshold to the strong inversion) and has the shorter calculation time than the iterative procedure approach. A charge sheet model based on the above explicit surface potential formulation is used to derive a single formula for the drain current valid in all regions of operation. Most of the secondary effects can be easily included in the charge sheet model and the model accurately reproduces various numerical and experimental results. No discontinuity in the derivative of the surface potential is found even though three types of smoothing functions are used. More importantly, the newly introduced parameters used in the smoothing functions do not strongly depend on the process parameter.

In this paper, we proposed a new algorithm of the inverse scattering for the reconstruction of unknown dielectric scatterers using the finite-difference time-domain method and the design sensitivity analysis. We introduced the design sensitivity analysis based on the gradient information for the fast convergence of the reconstruction. By introducing the adjoint variable method for the efficient calculation, we derived the adjoint variable equation. As an optimal algorithm, we used the steepest descent method and reconstructed the dielectric targets using the iterative estimation. To verify our algorithm, we will show the numerical examples for the two-dimensional $TM^2$ cases.
To improve the performance of climate and numerical models, concerns on the land-atmosphere schemes are steadily increased in recent years. For the realistic calculation of land-atmosphere interaction, a land surface information of high quality is strongly required. In this study, a new land cover map over the Korean peninsula was developed using MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data. The seven phenological data set (maximum, minimum, amplitude, average, growing period, growing and shedding rate) derived from 15-day normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were used as a basic input data. The ISOData (Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis), a kind of unsupervised non-hierarchical clustering method, was applied to the seven phenological data set. After the clustering, assignment of land cover type to the each cluster was performed according to the phenological characteristics of each land cover defined by USGS (US. Geological Survey). Most of the Korean peninsula are occupied by deciduous broadleaf forest (46.5%), mixed forest (15.6%), and dryland crop (13%). Whereas, the dominant land cover types are very diverse in South-Korea: evergreen needleleaf forest (29.9%), mixed forest (26.6%), deciduous broadleaf forest (16.2%), irrigated crop (12.6%), and dryland crop (10.7%). The 38 in-situ observation data-base over South-Korea, Environment Geographic Information System and Google-earth are used in the validation of the new land cover map. In general, the new land cover map over the Korean peninsula seems to be better classified compared to the USGS land cover map, especially for the Savanna in the USGS land cover map.

In order to improve the performance of temperature field measurements by CT-TDLAS (Computer Tomography Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy), a new reconstruction algorithm, named two-ratios-of-three-peaks method is proposed in this paper. Further, two methods for selecting appropriate initial values of the iterative calculation of CT-TDLAS are proposed. One is MLOS (multiplicative line of sight) method and the other one is ALOS (additive line of sight) method. Two-ratios-of-three-peaks (2R3P) algorithm combined with MART (multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique) is finally developed for the enhancements of reconstructive calculations. The results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional one-ratio-of-two-peaks (1R2P) algorithm. In order to evaluate the performance of this algorithm, numerical test has been performed using phantom Gaussian temperature distributions with $11{\times}11$ square mesh. The performance of the constructed algorithm has been demonstrated by comparing the results obtained in actual burner experiments with those obtained by thermocouples. It has been verified that 2R3P algorithm with MART and MLOS showed best performance than that of 1R2P algorithm.
Three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity inversion including a topographic effect can be considered theoretically to be the technique of acquiring the most accurate image in the interpretation of resistivity data, because it includes characteristic image that the actual subsurface structure is 3-D. In this study, a finite-element method was used as the numerical method in modeling, and the efficiency of Jacobian calculation has been maximized with sensitivity analysis for the destination block in inversion process. Also, during the iterative inversion, the resolution of inversion can be improved with the method of selecting the optimal value of Lagrange multiplier yielding minimum RMS(root mean square) error in the parabolic equation. In this paper, we present synthetic examples to compare the difference between the case which has the toprographic effect and the other case which has not the effect in the inversion process.
As a valid numerical method to obtain a high-resolution result of a flow field, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been widely used to study coolant flow and heat transfer characteristics in fuel rod bundles. However, the time-consuming, iterative calculation of Navier-Stokes equations makes CFD unsuitable for the scenarios that require efficient simulation such as sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification. To solve this problem, a reduced-order model (ROM) based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and machine learning (ML) is proposed to simulate the flow field efficiently. Firstly, a validated CFD model to output the flow field data set of the rod bundle is established. Secondly, based on the POD method, the modes and corresponding coefficients of the flow field were extracted. Then, an deep feed-forward neural network, due to its efficiency in approximating arbitrary functions and its ability to handle high-dimensional and strong nonlinear problems, is selected to build a model that maps the non-linear relationship between the mode coefficients and the boundary conditions. A trained surrogate model for modes coefficients prediction is obtained after a certain number of training iterations. Finally, the flow field is reconstructed by combining the product of the POD basis and coefficients. Based on the test dataset, an evaluation of the ROM is carried out. The evaluation results show that the proposed POD-ROM accurately describe the flow status of the fluid field in rod bundles with high resolution in only a few milliseconds.
Spatial cable systems can provide more transverse stiffness and torsional stiffness without sacrificing the vertical bearing capacity compared with conventional vertical cable systems, which is quite lucrative for long-span earth-anchored suspension bridges' development. Higher economy highlights the importance of refined form-finding analysis. Meanwhile, the internal connection between the lateral and vertical sags has not yet been specified. Given this, an analytic algorithm of form-finding for the earth-anchored suspension bridge with spatial cables is proposed in this paper. Through the geometric compatibility condition and mechanical equilibrium condition, the expressions for cable segment, the recurrence relationship between catenary parameters and control equations of spatial cable are established. Additionally, the nonlinear general reduced gradient method is introduced into fast and high-precision numerical analysis. Furthermore, the analytic expression of the lateral and vertical sags is deduced and discussed. This is very significant for the space design above the bridge deck and the optimization of the sag-to-span ratio in the preliminary design stage of the bridge. Finally, the proposed method is verified with the aid of two examples, one being an operational self-anchored suspension bridge (with spatial cables and a 260 m main span), and the other being an earth-anchored suspension bridge under design (with spatial cables and a 500 m main span). The necessity of an iterative calculation for hanger tensions on earth-anchored suspension bridges is confirmed. It is further concluded that the main cable and their connected hangers are in very close inclined planes.

The existing numerical methods on the vertical membrane breakwater have employed a linear analysis where the variable membrane tension occurring during membrane motions is assumed to be very negligible compared to the initial tension. In the present study, a quasi-nonlinear analysis is attempted such that the temporary tension of the membrane is substituted by the average tension for a wave period that is sought by an iterative calculation. The results showed that with the increase of the wave period the reflection coefficients appeared larger and the transmission coefficients smaller compared to the results of the linear analysis. The application of the quasi-nonlinear analysis also showed that the performance of the structure is closely dependent on the horizontal deformation of the membrane. In order to suppress the horizontal deformation, it may be required to take the larger initial tension of the membrane or to put additional mooring lines in the middle of the vertical faces of the membrane. But for theses methods to be effective, a largely sized surface float should be installed to secure enough buoyancy to support such downward forces.
