A 2D-LDV system was employed to investigate the flow field characteristics in fully developed drag reducing turbulent channel flows. The additive used in this study was Habon-G which showed splendid drag reduction effect and minimum mechanical degradation trend in the closed flow circulation loop. In order to have better understanding of the drag reduction mechanism, the instantaneous velocities were carefully measured under various experimental conditions and the flow characteristics including time-averaged velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stresses were carefully assessed. The time-averaged velocity profiles of surfactant flows showed more parabolic shape(typically shown in a laminar flow) together with significant suppression of turbulent production, yielding the shear induced micelle structure orienting in the flow direction due to its isotropic characteristics. Especially it was observed that the maximum intensity for drag reducing flows was shifted away from the wall and that the streamwise and normal turbulent intensities were strongly altered. This phenomenon strongly suggests that the viscous sublayer becomes thicker with addition of surfactant. Turbulent momentum transport was drastically suppressed across the whole drag reducing channel flow.

TRISO coated fuel particle is one of the most important materials for hydrogen production using HTGR (high temperature gas cooled reactors). It is composed of three isotropic layers: inner pyrolytic carbon (IPyC), silicon carbide (SiC), outer pyrolytic carbon (OPyC) layers. In this study, TRISO coated fuel particle layers were deposited through CVD process in a horizontal hot wall deposition system. Also the computational simulations of input gas velocity, temperature profile and pressure in the reaction chamber were conducted with varying process variable (i.e temperature and input gas ratios). As deposition temperature increased, microstructure, chemical composition and growth behavior changed and deposition rate increased. The simulation showed that the change of reactant states affected growth rate at each position of the susceptor. The experimental results showed a close correlation with the simulation results.

A steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation was conducted to investigate the distribution of the Reynolds stress tensor inside tip leakage vortex of a linear compressor cascade. Two different inlet flow angles ${\beta}=29.3^{\circ}$(design condition) and $36.5^{\circ}$(off-design condition) at a constant tip clearance size of $1\%$ blade span were considered. Classical methods of solid mechanics, applied to view the Reynolds stress tensor in the principal direction system, clearly showed that the high anisotropic feature of turbulent flow field was dominant at the outer part of tip leakage vortex near the suction side of the blade and endwall flow separation region, whereas a nearly isotropic turbulence was found at the center of tip leakage vortex. There was no significant difference in the anisotropy of the Reynolds normal stresses inside tip leakage vortex between the design and off-design condition.
An active inspection system using Lamb waves for structural health monitoring was considered in this paper. In order to understand the characteristics of the Lamb waves propagating in a composite plate, the experiment was performed for a quasi-isotropic composite plate with thickness variation. Lamb waves were generated and received by the thin PZT transducers bonded on the surface. In this test, a simple new technique was tried for characterizing the Lamb waves propagating across the discontinuity due to the thickness variation. The results showed that Lamb waves were more sensitive to the thinner plate with faster group velocity and that the thickness change in composite plate was detectable. Consequently, the potential of applying this technique to structural health monitoring was verified.
An active damage detection technique is introduced to locate damage in an isotropic plate using Lamb waves. This technique uses a time-domain energy model of Lamb waves in plates that the wave amplitude inversely decays with the propagation distance along a ray direction. Accordingly the damage localization is formulated as a least-squares problem to minimize an error function between the model and the measured data. An active sensing system with integrated actuators/sensors is controlled to excite/receive $A_0$ mode of Lamb waves in the plate. Scattered wave signals from the damage can be obtained by subtracting the baseline signal of the undamaged plate from the recorded signal of the damaged plate. In the experimental study, after collecting the scattered wave signals, a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is employed to extract the first scattered wave pack from the damage, then an iterative method is derived to solve the least-squares problem for locating the damage. Since this method does not rely on time-of-flight but wave energy measurement, it is more robust, reliable, and noise-tolerant. Both numerical and experimental examples are performed to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the method, and the results demonstrate that the estimated damage position stably converges to the targeted damage.
In this paper, first, the equations of motion for a rectangular isotropic plate have been derived. This derivation is based on the Von Karmann theory and the effects of shear deformation have been considered. Introducing an Airy stress function, the equations of motion have been transformed to a nonlinear coupled equation. Using Galerkin method, this equation has been separated into position and time functions. By means of the dimensional analysis, it is shown that the orders of magnitude for nonlinear terms are small with respect to linear terms. The Multiple Scales Method has been applied to the equation of motion in the forced vibration and free vibration cases and closed-form relations for the nonlinear natural frequencies, displacement and frequency response of the plate have been derived. The obtained results in comparison with numerical methods are in good agreements. Using the obtained relation, the effects of initial displacement, thickness and dimensions of the plate on the nonlinear natural frequencies and displacements have been investigated. These results are valid for a special range of the ratio of thickness to dimensions of the plate, which is a characteristic of the Multiple Scales Method. In the forced vibration case, the frequency response equation for the primary resonance condition is calculated and the effects of various parameters on the frequency response of system have been studied.
A passive vibration mitigation architecture is proposed to damp transverse vibrations of guyed masts. The scheme is based on a number of pendula attached to the mast and tuned to the vibration modes to be controlled. This scheme differs from the well-known autoparametric pendulum absorber system. The equations of motion of the guyed mast with an arbitrary number of pendula are obtained. The leading bending behaviour of a typical truss mast is described by an equivalent beam model whereas the guys are conveniently modeled as equivalent transverse springs whose stiffness comprises the elastic and geometric stiffness. By assuming a mast with an inertially and elastically isotropic cross-section, a planar model of the guyed mast is investigated. The linearization of the equations of motion of the mast subject to a harmonic distributed force leads to the transfer functions of the structure without the dampers and with the dampers. The transfer functions allow to investigate the mitigation effects of the pendula. By employing one pendulum only, tuned to the frequency of the lowest mode, the effectiveness of the passive vibration potential in reducing the motion and acceleration of the top section of the mast is demonstrated.
The high-order Laplacian-type filter, which is capable of providing isotropic and sharp cut-off filtering on the spherical domain, is essential in processing geophysical data. In this study, a spherical high-order filter was designed by combining the Fourier method with finite difference-method in the longitude and latitude, respectively. The regular grid system was employed in the filter, which has uniform angular spacing including the poles. The singularity at poles was eliminated by incorporating variable transforms and continuity-matching boundary conditions across poles. The high-order filter was assessed using the Rossby-Haurwitz wave, the observed geopotential, and observed wind field. The performance of the filter was found comparable to the filter based on the Galerkin procedure. The filter, employing the finite difference method, can be designed to give any target order of accuracy, which is an important advantage being unavailable in other methods. The computational complexity is represented with 2n-1 diagonal matrices solver with n being the target order of accuracy. Along with the availability of arbitrary target-order, it is also advantageous that the filter can adopt the reduced grid to increase computational efficiency.
In this paper, a system of falling weight impact tester was built up to evaluate the impact energy absorbing characteristics and impact strength of CFRP laminate plates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory. Delamination area of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation was measured with ultrasonic C-scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having four interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the more absorbed energy. Hybrid specimen containing GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.

Asymptotic analysis is a powerful tool for the mathematically rigorous design and analysis of anisotropic beam structures. However, it has a limitation in that the asymptotic approach requires asymptotically correct boundary conditions for higher-order solutions, which are often needed for beams weak in shear. A method utilizing Saint-Venant's principle was proposed in a previous work to improve the stress state of isotropic beams and plates. In this paper, such a method is generalized for anisotropic beams, so that one does not need to consider the asymptotically correct boundary conditions for higher-order solutions. Consequently, solving the recursive system equations is not necessary, which makes the method very efficient in terms of accuracy and computational effort.
