Batch experiment studies were carried out on the adsorption of the major tar compound, 2-picoline, derived from the plant cell cultures of Taxus chinensis, using Sylopute while varying parameters such as initial 2-picoline concentration, contact time and adsorption temperature. The experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Comparison of results revealed that the Langmuir isotherm model could account for the adsorption isotherm data with the highest accuracy among the four isotherm models considered. From the analysis of adsorption isotherms, it was found that adsorption capacity decreased with increasing temperature and the adsorption of 2-picoline onto Sylopute was favorable. The kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while intraparticle diffusion and boundary layer diffusion did not play a dominated role in 2-picoline adsorption according to the intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the exothermic, irreversible and non-spontaneous nature of adsorption. The isosteric heat of adsorption decreased as surface loading ($q_e$) increased, indicating a heterogeneous surface.
In batch experiments, the adsorption of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel was studied using Sylopute. Experimental equilibrium data were applied to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Among the four isotherm models tested, the Langmuir isotherm model gave the highest accuracy. The adsorption capacity was found to decrease with increases in temperature and the adsorption of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel onto Sylopute was a favorable physical process. Adsorption kinetic data agreed very well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while boundary layer diffusion and intraparticle diffusion did not play a key role in the adsorption process. The process of 7-epi-10-deacetylpaclitaxel adsorption onto Sylopute was exothermic and nonspontaneous. Also, the adsorption isosteric heat was independent of surface loading indicating an energetically homogeneous adsorbent.
Most of the herb residue producing from oriental medical clinics(OMC) and hospitals(OMH) is wasted in Korea. To develop of adsorbent for removing heavy metal from wastewater, the various pre-treatment methods of the herb residue were evaluated by potentiometric titration, Freundlich isotherm adsorption test and the kinetic adsorption test. The herb residue was pre-treated for increasing the adsorption capacity by cleaning with distilled water, 0.1 N HCl and 0.1 N NaOH and by heating at $370^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. It showed a typical weak acid-weak base titration curve and a short pH break like commercial activated carbon during photentiometric titration of pre-treated herb residue. The log-log plots in the Freundlich isotherm test were linear on the herb residue pre-treated with NaOH or HCl like commercial activated carbon. The adsorption capacity(qe) in the Freundlich isotherm test for $Cr^{6+}$ was 1.5 times higher in the pre-treated herb residue with HCl than in activated carbon. On the other hand the herb residue pre-treated with NaOH showed the good adsorption capacities for $Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Cd^{2+}$ even though those adsorption capacities were lower than that of activated carbon. In kinetic test, most of heavy metals removed within the first 10 min of contact and then approached to equilibrium with increasing contact time. The removal rate of heavy metals increased with an increase of the amount of adsorbent. Likewise, the removal rates of heavy metals were higher in the herb residue pre-treated with NaOH than in that pre-treated with HCl. The adsorption preference of herb residues pre-treated with NaOH or HCl was $Pb^{2+}>Cu^{2+}$ or $Cd^{2+}>Cr^{6+}$ in the order. Conclusively, the herb residue can be used as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals depending on pr-treatment methods.

Adsorption behaviors of Ni(II) ions were investigated using amorphous alumina as adsorbent. In the adsorption kinetic study, it was observed that Ni(II) ions were bound to the alumina surface in two adsorption stages, the rapid and slow adsorption stages. The rapid adsorption proceeded within 1 hr, thereafter the slow adsorption occurred. The results of adsorption isotherm experiments showed that the Ni(II) adsorption obeyed the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm, and that the adsorption enhanced with increasing pH. The change in ionic strength did not exhibit a conspicuous trend in Ni(II) adsorption, thereby suggesting that the adsorption occurs through surface complexation rather than electrostatic interactions. The amounts of adsorption were measured with varying pH at three different Ni(II) concentrations under the condition of constant ionic strength, showing that with increasing Ni(II) concentration, the percentage of adsorption decreased and the adsorption edge was shifted to a higher pH value.
BACKGROUND: The ferronickel and rapid cooling slags used in present study are industrial wastes derived from a steel factory in Korea. These slags are used as almost road construction materials after magnetic separation. However, the use of slag to remove phosphorus from wastewater is still a relatively less explored. The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of ferronickel slag (FNS) and rapid cooling slag (RCS) as sorbents for phosphorus removal in wastewater. METHODS AND RESULTS: Adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the adsorption characteristics of the FNS and RCS for the phosphorus. Adsorption behaviour of the phosphorus by the FNS and RCS was evaluated using both the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm equations. FNS and RCS were divided into two sizes as effective sizes. Effective sizes of FNS and RCS were 0.5 and 2.5 mm, respectively. The adsorption capacities (K) of the phosphorus by the FNS and RCS were in the order of RCS 0.5 (0.5105) > RCS 2.5 (0.3572) ${\gg}$ FNS 2.5 (0.0545) ${\fallingdotseq}$ FNS 0.5 (0.0400) based on Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities (a; mg/kg) of the phosphorus determined by the Langmuir isotherms were in the order of RCS 0.5 (3,582 mg/kg) > RCS 2.5 (2,983 mg/kg) > FNS 0.5 (320 mg/kg) ${\fallingdotseq}$ FNS 2.5 (187 mg/kg). RCS 0.5 represented the best sorbent for the adsorption of phosphorus. In the experiment, the Langmuir model showed better fit with our data than the Freundlich model. CONCLUSION: This study indicate that the use of RCS in constructed wetlands or filter beds is a promising solution for phosphorus removal via adsorption and precipitation mechanisms.
Cadmium (Cd) adsorption by the activated carbon containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated. Cd adsorption with different HAP mass ranged from 10% to 30%. With more HAP, more Cd was adsorbed. These results suggest that the higher HAP dose causes an increase of the ion exchange potential in HAP sorbent. Kinetics and equilibrium studies were investigated in series of batch adsorption experiments. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fit to the equilibrium data and Cd adsorption on HAP sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well in the initial adsorbate concentration range. The simple kinetic model, the pseudo first order kinetic model and the pseudo second order kinetic model, were used to investigate the adsorption. The adsorption reaction of Cd followed the pseudo second order kinetic model, and the adsorption pseudo second order kinetic constants ($k_2$) increased with increasing initial HAP amounts onto activated carbon. Also, intraparticle diffusion model was used to investigate the adsorption mechanism between adsorbate and adsorbent in the aqueous phase. Surface adsorption reaction and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously Cd adsorption mechanism from aqueous phase in this study.
In this study, experiments on the static adsorption of benzene were carried out using activated carbon made from Pinus koraiensis which is normally discarded waste timber in South Korea. The experiment were performed at 303.15 K, 318.15 K and 333.15 K under the pressure up to 7.999 kPa. Isothermal adsorption curves were obtained using Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm and Toth isotherm for comparison. Based on the fitting, the adsorption quantity of Benzene (q), the isothermal adsorption curves obtained from Langmuir isotherm and Toth isotherm showed the higher accuracy. Although there was little difference in accuracy between result from Langmuir isotherm and that from Toth isotherm, the adsorption quantity of Benzene (q) was expressed in terms of Langmuir isotherm because less parameters were required for Langmuir isotherm than for Toth isotherm. Moreover SEM images of the activated carbon from Pinus koraiensis and the commercial activated carbon were taken to observe the pore size development. The results showed that the perforation development of activated carbon from Pinus koraiensis (waste timber) was better than that of commercial activated carbon (DARCO A.C., SPG-100 A.C.). Adsorption quantity of benzene on activated carbon from Pinus koraiensis was confirmed to be higher than that on commercial activated carbon. Therefore, we may conclude that it is feasible to commercialize the process to manufacturing activated carbon from waste timber.
Polysaccharides are very effective adsorbents for heavy metals. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of various polysaccharides for heavy metal adsorption were investigated. Tested polysaccharides were homogeneous polysaccharides such as curdlan, chitin, starch, cellulose, Avicel, and Solka floc and heterogeneous polysaccharides such as zooglan, locust bean gum, ghatti gum, pectin, and xylan. Lead(II) adsoption characteristic on these polysaccharides followed Freundlich isotherm and the isotherm parameters were calculated. For adsorption of lead(ll), Avicel, starch, and zooglan were found to be good adsorbents.

The effects of various factors such as adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity, species and concentration of adsorbates(benzene and toluene) and aspect ratio(L/D) on adsorption characteristics were investigated in a fixed bed with activated carbon. The breakthrough time in a fixed bed was decreased with the increasing of adsorption temperature, interstitial velocity and concentration of adsorbates. The interstitial velocity, concentration of adsorbates and adsorption temperature had influenced considerably upon the MTZ(mass transfer zone) and LUB(length of unused bed) obtained through the breakthrough curves, while aspect ratio(L/D) had smaller effect than former factors. Especially, the concentration of adsorbates among factors have the largest effect on MTZ and LUB. From comparison with the model isotherms, such as the Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich, the experimental isotherm data of benzene and toluene agreed farily well to three adsorption isotherm models.

The adsorption characteristics of phenol has been studied by using CDQ (Cokes Drying Quenching) dust as an adsorbent. The adsorption capacity of CDQ dust was shown to be 42% about removal for 300 ppm phenol solution at the equilibrium adsorption time of 60 min. Removal percentage of phenol increased as the initial phenol concentration was raised in the experimental conditions and the adsorption behavior was explained well by Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Kinetic study showed that the adsorption followed 1st, 1.5th, and 2nd-order rate equation in the sequence as the adsorption time passed. Since the adsorption amount of phenol was increased as the adsorption temperature was raised, the adsorption was thought to be endothermic, and several thermodynamic parameters have been calculated based upon experimental data. Adsorbed amount of phenol on CDQ dust changed little according to the variation in the solution pH except for the slight decrease under the strong alkaline condition.
