Isolation and Identification of Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria from Chinese Cabbage and Their Effect on Growth and Phosphorus Utilization of Plants

  • Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) were isolated from the rhizosphere of Chinese cabbage and screened on the basis of their solubilization of inorganic tricalcium phosphate in liquid cultures. Ten strains that had higher solubilization potential were selected, and they also produced indole-3-acetic acid, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, and siderophores. The strains were identified to be members of Pseudomonas, by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Seed bacterization with PSB strains increased the root elongation and biomass of Chinese cabbage in seedling culture, although they had no effect on phosphorus uptake of plants. The plant growth promotion by PSB in this study could be due to the production of phytohormones or mechanisms other than phosphate solubilization, since they had no effect on P nutrition.

  • Phytochemical investigation of the berries of Juniperus phoenicea led to the isolation of 4 compounds, namely; scutellarin, isoscutellarin, shikimic acid and the new palmitoyl lactone derivative 16-hydroxy palmitic-1,16-olide. This is the first report for the occurrence of these compounds in the species grown in Libya. The identification of the isolated compounds was based on the application of different spectroscopic techniques. In addition, the antihepatotoxic effect of the aqueous decoction of the berries was investigated.

  • We previously reported the hepato-protective effect of butanol soluble fraction of methanolic extract of Carthamus tinctorius L. Semen on carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity. In this study, the active component from the butanol soluble fraction was isolated by column chromatographic separation using Silica gel and Sephadex LH -20 and identified by spectroscopic methods such as Mass, $^1$H - NMR and $\^$13/C-NMR. The hepato-protective effect of the isolated active component on the CCl$_4$-induced liver damaged rats has been evaluated by performing blood chemical analysis and biotransformational enzyme analysis.

Effect of MDOF structures' optimal dampers on seismic fragility of piping

  • Over the past few decades, seismic retrofitting of structural systems has been significantly improved by the adoption of various methods such as FRP composite wraps, base isolation systems, and passive/active damper control systems. In parallel with this trend, probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) for structural and nonstructural components has become necessary for risk mitigation and the achievement of reliable designs in performance-based earthquake engineering. The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect on piping fragility at T-joints due to seismic retrofitting of structural systems with passive energy-dissipation devices (i.e., linear viscous dampers). Three mid-rise building types were considered: without any seismic retrofitting; with distributed damper systems; with optimal placement of dampers. The results showed that the probability of piping system failure was considerably reduced in a Multi Degree of Freedom (MDOF) building retrofitted with optimal passive damper systems at lower floor levels. This effect of damper systems on piping fragility became insignificant as the floor level increased.

  • This study aims to evaluate factors of ceiling structure influencing to the floor impact sound. For this reasons, we measured the vibration of ceiling and the floor impact sound by ceiling structure. The main results from this study are that ceiling structure makes worse to non-ceiling structure for an effect of air layer in heavy-weight floor impact sound. But it has an effect on light-weight floor impact sound about $2\sim8dB$.

  • Triterpenoids. Ursolic acid (1). 23-hydroxyursolic acid (2). and tormentic acid (3) were obtained by the hydrolysis of BuOH fraction of Cussonia bancoensis extract and further chromatographic isolation to test antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of C. bancoensis (Aratiaceae). Compound 1 and 2 exhibited anti-nociceptive effects, which were determined by acetic acid-induced writhing test and hot plate test.   • The study of two-dimensional electron systems with extraordinarily low levels of disorder was, for a long time, the exclusive privilege of the epitaxial thin film research community. However, the successful isolation of graphene by mechanical exfoliation has truly disrupted this field. Furthermore, the assembly of heterostructures consisting of several layers of different 2D materials in arbitrary order by exploiting van der Waals forces has been a game-changer in the field of low-dimensional physics. This technique can be generalized to the large class of strictly 2D materials and offers unprecedented parameters to play with in order to tune electronic and other properties. It has led to a paradigm shift in the field of 2D condensed matter physics with bright prospects. In this review article, we discuss three device fabrication techniques towards high mobility devices: suspended structures, dry transfer, and pick-up transfer methods. We also address state-of-the-art device structures, which are fabricated by the van der Waals pick-up transfer method. Finally, we briefly introduce correlated ground states in the fractional quantum Hall regime.

  • We describe the immune stimulatory effects of compounds determined by means of activity-monitored extraction and isolation techniques. As a result, 4-carboethoxy-6-methoxy-2-quinolone (1) and 4-carboethoxy-6-hydroxy-2-quinolone (2) were isolated from the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of the Oryza sativa cv. Heugnambyeo bran, and were determined to exert significant inhibitory effects in macrophage cell line (murine RAW 264.7) and murine splenocytes. The structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic evidence, particularly the results obtained via hetero nuclear multiple-bond connectivity and high-resolution MS spectroscopy. Up to date, compound (1) was isolated as natural sources for the first time.

Comparative Study on the Production of Interferons from Porcine Blood Leukocytes (돼지의 백혈구 인터폐론 생산에 관한 비교연구)

  • Attempts were to produce porcine leukocyte interferon(PorLeIF) and porcine immune interferon (PorIIF) in the culture of porcine leukocytes. The interferons produced were tested for antiviral activity against vesicular stomatitis virus on poreine-derived PK(15) cells, human-derived FL cells, and Korean native black goat-derived BGK cells. The results were summarized as follws: 1. In the isolation of porcine leukocytes, the mean isolation rate by the buffy coat separation method (28.7%) was higher than that by the hydroxyethyl starch-RBC sedimentation method (9.2%). 2. When NDV(BI)-induced PorLeIFs were assyed on PK(15) cells and FL cells, the mean titers were 129 IU/ml and 72 IU/ml respectively, being 55.8% of the activity in homologous species system expressed in heterologous system. 3. The activities of PHA P-induced PorIIFs were 197 IU/ml on PK (15) cells and no activity on human FL cells. The mean antiviral activity of PorIIF was 1.5 times that of PorLeIF in PK (15) cells. 4. The cytopathic effect of vesicular stomatitis virus was observed in BGK cells derived from Korean native black goat kidney permitting interferon assay on the cells. While the cross-species antiviral activity of reference human ${\alpha},\;{\beta}-interferon$ was observed on the cells, PorLeIF and PorIIF did not show any activity.

Isolation of Getah virus from racehorse in Korea (국내(國內) 경주마(競走馬)에서의 Getah 바이러스 분리(分離) 동정(同定))

  • Getah virus is known as a causative agent of recognized febrile illness of horses characterized by fever, rash and edema. A serological survey indicated that hemagglutination inhibition antibody against Getah virus was detected in 34% of 464 racehorses from Korean Horse Affairs Association and 57% of 262 ponies from Cheju island, respectively. Several field strains of Getah virus isolated were from the racehorse that have been shown fever and febrile signs in 1989. The field isolates produced cytopathic effect in Vero, MA-104, BHK-21 cell cultures. Especially, they multiplied to the highest titer($10^6TCID_{50}/0.1ml$) in Vero cell cultures. When day-old mice were inoculated with field isolates by the intracerebral route, they showed a typical paralysis sign and died within seven days after inoculation. The guinea pig exhibited skin rash and edema, and died with neural signs after inoculation with the field isolates. In the cross neutralization test and indirect immunofuorescent assay, the field isolates were proved to be closely related to the Sakai strain of Getah virus antigenically.
