  • Isolated boost converter is desirable in the dc/dc converter applications where isolation is required and extremely high step up is needed. Transformer used to step up low input voltage into high output voltage must satisfy the volt-sec balance condition. Conventional isolated boost converter is controlled with conducting intervals overlapping. In this case, there is a problem that control circuit is complicated. In this paper, it is proposed and analyzed the isolated boost converter which set up a reset winding for the volt-sec balance of transformer and can construct the control circuit simple by using a self-driven switch. Finally, the validity of the theoretical analyses for the proposed converter is verified by both simulations and experiments on the 10[W] class isolated boost converter.

  • The study on the multi-level inverter has been increasingly progressing to reduce the switching loss and improve the THD of output current in photovoltaic inverter. Recently, the main topics of multi-level inverter are to reduce the number of devices maintaining the power quality. Therefore, the novel topology was proposed for these problem which is composed of the isolated H-bridge multi-level inverter using the three phase low frequency transformer. The proposed multi-level inverter may not be need for a independent DC power, diode and capacitor. Specially, It has a advantage in generating high voltage source. The proposed approach is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic property of ground overvoltage relay in large turbine generator. Relay operation is based on detecting the fundamental voltages originating from the generator. Calculations of fault voltage and current are reviewed for the neutral ground resistance. The frequency, ampitude and waveform of individual harmonics were measured using power quality analyzer and memory hi-corder at the secondary side of ground potential transformer. The ac and dc high-potential tests were applied to evaluate the condition of generator, main and auxiliary transformer, isolated phase bus, potential transformer, surge capacitor and arrester.

  • A new zero voltage switching (ZVS) 2-transformer boost converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has the advantage that the magnetizing inductor of the transformer acts for the boost inductor without additional inductor. Moreover, ZVS of main switches and auxiliary switches can be achieved, and the switch turn-off surge problem of conventional isolated boost converter is effectively solved. The operational principle, DC voltage gain, and ZVS characteristics are analyzed. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, simulation results with 200w, 24Vdc/200Vdc specification are presented.

  • The number of transformers and the size of transformers in inverter using 3-phase transformer could be reduced compare with a multi-level inverter using single phase transformer. but still the 3-phase transformer inverter needs many switches. In this study, we proposed the isolated multi-level inverter using 3-phase transformers and common arm. Also, the equal-area method is used to calculate conduction angle with switching frequency equal to output fundamental frequency and it can reduce harmonics component of output voltage and switching loss. Finally, We tested multi-level inverter to clarify electric circuit and reasonableness through Matlab simulation and experiment by using prototype inverter.

  • Power Transformers with more than one secondary winding are not uncommon in industrial applications. But new classes of applications where very large number of independent secondaries are used are becoming popular in controlled converters for medium and high voltage applications. Cascade H-bridge medium voltage drives and Pulse Step Modulation (PSM) based high voltage power supplies are such applications. Regulated high voltage power supplies (Fig. 1) with 35-100 kV, 5-10 MW output range with very fast dynamics (${\mu}S$ order) uses such transformers. Such power supplies are widely used in fusion research. Here series connection of isolated voltage sources with conventional switching semiconductor devices is achieved by large number of separate transformers or by single unit of multi-secondary transformer. Naturally, a transformer having numbers of secondary windings (~40) on single core is the preferred solution due to space and cost considerations. For design and simulation analysis of such a power supply, the model of a multi-secondary transformer poses special problem to any circuit analysis software as many simulation softwares provide transformer models with limited number (3-6) of secondary windings. Multi-Secondary transformer models with 3 different schemes are available. A comparison of test results from a practical Multi-secondary transformer with a simulation model using magnetic component is found to describe the behavior closer to observed test results. Earlier models assumed magnetising inductance in a linear loss less core model although in actual it is saturable core made-up of CRGO steel laminations. This article discusses a more detailed representation of flux coupled magnetic model with saturable core properties to simulate actual transformers very close to its observed parameters in test and actual usage.

  • This paper deals with an integrated voltage and frequency (VF) controller for isolated asynchronous generators (IAG) driven by a constant power pico-hydro uncontrolled turbine feeding three-phase four-wire loads. The proposed VF controller is used to control the frequency and voltage of an IAG with load leveling. Such a VF controller is also known as an integrated electronic load controller (IELC) which is realized using an isolated star/polygon transformer with a voltage source converter (VSC) and a battery at its DC bus. The proposed generating system with a VFC is modeled and simulated in MATLAB along with Simulink and Simpower system (SPS) toolboxes. The simulated results are presented to demonstrate the performance of an isolated asynchronous generator feeding three-phase four-wire loads with neutral current compensation.

  • Renewable energy resources such as wind and photovoltaic power generation systems demand a high step-up DC-DC converters to convert the low voltage to commercial grid voltage. However, the high step-up converter using a transformer has limitations of high voltage stresses of switches and diodes when the transformer winding ratio increases. Accordingly, conventional studies have been applied to series-connect multioutput converters such as forward-flyback and switched-capacitor flyback to reduce the transformer winding ratio. This paper proposes new single-ended converter topologies of an isolation type and a non-isolation type to improve power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and output ripple. The first proposal is an isolation-type charge-pump switched-capacitor flyback converter that includes an extreme-ratio isolation switched-capacitor cell with a chargepump circuit. It reduces the transformer winding number and the output ripple, and further improves power efficiency without any cost increase. The next proposal is a non-isolation charge-pump switched-capacitor-flyback tapped-inductor boost converter, which adds a charge-pump-connected flyback circuit to the conventional switched-capacitor boost converter to improve the power efficiency and to reduce the efficiency degradation from the input variation. In this paper, the operation principle of the proposed scheme is presented with the experimental results of the 100 W DC-DC converter for verification.

  • It is necessary to eliminate the broad band noise whose frequency is in the range of several kHz to tens MHz generated from the AC power line to supply the power to electrical and electronic equipments. Because this kind of noise could damage or malfunction such equipments. To suppress those noises, some conventional devices such as a filter or surge suppressor have been used. However, they can not be isolated from the common-mode noise widely spreaded in all power line, which results in poor common-mode rejection performance. In this paper, we proposed a design method of shielded isolation transformer and a jumped circuit analysis model for shielded isolation transformer applicable to filtering common-mode noise as well as normal-mode noise. The analysis model has been verified as a suitable one for shielded isolation transformer through comparison of the simulation with experiment. In addition, it has been shown that the reduction performance for conducted noise of prototype 3 kVA shielded isolation transformer is superior to a unshielded isolation transformer.
