The operating system for an isolated microgrid, which is completely disconnected from the central power system, aims at preventing blackouts and minimizing power generation costs of diesel generators through efficient operation of the energy storage system (ESS) that stores energy produced by renewable energy generators and diesel generators. In this paper, we predict the amount of renewable energy generation using the weather forecast and build an optimal diesel power generation plan using a genetic algorithm. In order to avoid inefficiency due to inaccurate prediction of renewable energy generation, our search algorithm imposes penalty on candidate diesel power generation plans that fail to maintain the SOC (state of charge) of ESS at an appropriate level. Simulation experiments show that our optimization method for maintaining an appropriate SOC balance can prevent the blackout better when compared with the previous method.

The generation of isolated grids by pulsed converters with characteristics close to the mains of the utility companies is a pretentious task. For generation of three-phase four-wire isolated grids are presented possible topologies and the demands on the system control are processed. For control of all conceivable load and error conditions, an extensive control technology is necessary. This must permit unsymmetrical operating conditions for an unlimited period but recognize errors simultaneously and therefore an overloading the consumer and the power semiconductors reliable may prevent. Measurement results on an experimental plant show the problems to be solved.
Antarctic King Sejong Station was established in King George Island, the South Pole in 1988, and has been executing the monitoring studies on the change of antarctic natural environment. As an available power, the wind energy generator has been used in the form of hybrid with mainly diesel generator. Because the wind generation power sharply changes by wind energy, it must be careful during the system operation. When the power system becomes stable, the output performance of wind energy generator becomes stable. But, in case of unstable system, the errors frequently occur on the wind energy generator and it badly impacts the power system by output of wind energy generator. The purpose of this paper is to analyze suitability while operating the system of 10kW wind energy generator at Antarctic King Sejong Station, an isolated area, and to analyze the problem and improvements by power quality.
Distributed Generation (DG) is predicted to play a important role in electric power system in the near future. insertion of DG system into existing distribution network has great impact on real-time system operation and planning. It is widely accepted that micro turbine generation (MTG) systems are currently attracting lot of attention to meet customers need in the distributed power generation market. In order to investigate the performance of MT generation systems, their efficient modeling is required. This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a MT generation system suitable for isolated operation. The system comprises of a Permanent magnet synchronous generator driven by a MT. A brief description of the overall system is given, and mathematical models for the MT and permanent magnet synchronous generator are presented. Also, the use of power electronics in conditioning the power output of the generating system is demonstrated. Simulation studies with MATLAB/Simulink have been carried out in islanding operation mode of a DG system.
This paper deals with a voltage and frequency (VF) controller for an isolated power generation system based on an asynchronous generator (AG) driven by a pico hydro turbine. The proposed controller is a combination of a static compensator (STATCOM) and an electronic load controller (ELC) for decoupled control of the reactive and active powers of the AG system to control the voltage and frequency respectively. The proposed generating system along with its VF controller is modeled in MATLAB using SIMULINK and PSB (Power System Block Sets) toolboxes. The performance of the controller is verified for the proposed system and feeding various types of consumer load such as linear/non-linear, balanced/unbalanced and dynamic loads.

This research presented a numerical and experimental study on the seismic performance of first-generation base-isolated and fixed-base nuclear power plants (NPP). Three types of the base isolation system were applied to rehabilitate the first-generation nuclear power plants: frictional pendulum (FP), high-damping rubber (HDR) and lead-rubber (LR) base isolation. Also, an Excel program was proposed for the design of the abovementioned base isolators in accordance with UBC 97 and the Japan Society of Base Isolation Regulation. The seismic assessment was performed using the pushover and nonlinear time history analysis methods in accordance with the FEMA 356 regulation. To validate the adequacy of the proposed design procedure, two small-scale NPPs were constructed at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's structural laboratory and subjected to a pushover test for two different base conditions, fixed and HDR-isolated base. The results showed that base-isolated structures achieved adequate seismic performance compared with the fixed-base one, and all three isolators led to a significant reduction in the containment's tension, overturning moment and base shear.
In this paper, firstly, acceleration-time histories were generated by varying strong motion duration in the frequency domain for application to a seismically isolated nuclear power structure, so as to examine the effects of strong motion duration on the behavior of the structure. Secondly, real recorded earthquakes were modified to match the target response spectrum based on the revised SRP 3.7.1(2007) and the modified time histories were applied to the analysis of a seismically isolated nuclear power structure. The obtained values of acceleration and displacement responses of the structure were, finally, compared with the values obtained in case of applying acceleration-time histories generated in the frequency domain to the structure.
Due to the severe impacts of recent earthquakes, the use of seismic isolation is paramount for the safety of nuclear structures. The diversity observed in seismic events demands ongoing research to analyze the devastating attributes involved, and hence to enhance the sustainability of base-isolated nuclear power plants. This study reports the seismic performance of a seismically-isolated nuclear reactor containment building (NRCB) under strong short-period ground motions (SPGMs) and long-period ground motions (LPGMs). The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission-based design response spectrum for the seismic design of nuclear power plants is stipulated as the reference spectrum for ground motion selection. Within the period range(s) of interest, the spectral matching of selected records with the target spectrum is ensured using the spectral-compatibility approach. NRC-compliant SPGMs and LPGMs from the mega-thrust Tohoku earthquake are used to obtain the structural response of the base-isolated NRCB. To account for the lack of earthquakes in low-to-moderate seismicity zones and the gap in the artificial synthesis of long-period records, wavelet-decomposition based autoregressive moving average modeling for artificial generation of real ground motions is performed. Based on analysis results from real and simulated SPGMs versus LPGMs, the performance of NRCBs is discussed with suggestions for future research and seismic provisions.

To satisfy the high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connection demand for wind power generation system, a novel topology and control strategy of HVDC grid connection for open-winding permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind power generation system is proposed, in which two generator-side converter and two isolated DC/DC converters are used to transmit the wind energy captured by open winding PMSG to HVDC grid. By deducing the mathematic model of open winding PMSG, the vector control technique, position sensorless operation, and space vector modulation strategy is applied to implement the stable generation operation of PMSG. Finally, the simulation model based on MATLAB is built to validate the availability of the proposed control strategy.
Purpose - This study estimated the non-market value of pumped storage power generation using the contingent valuation method(CVM). Design/methodology/approach - CVM, a non-market value estimation method, was used. The perception of pumped storage power generation and the willingness to pay(WTP) for pumped storage power generation were investigated among 612 randomly selected households. Findings - It was analyzed that the average value per household was 7309.99 won/month, and the sources of these benefits were 1819.37 won due to the improvement of power generation efficiency, 1320.48 won due to the improvement of power system reliability, 2359.24 won due to the stabilization of electricity rates, 2110.89 won due to water resource management It was assumed that a circle occurred. If the average monthly benefit per household is expanded to cover countries across the country, it is estimated that the annual value to our society from pumped storage power generation will be KRW 1.796.6 trillion. Research implications or Originality - It is necessary to consider the operation of pumped-water power generation by reflecting the value of pumped-up power generation that is not evaluated in the market. Since Korea's electricity market is isolated in a state where it is impossible to connect with other countries, it may be vulnerable to a stable electricity operation system. Therefore, there is a need for a facility that can stably secure reserve power and produce power quickly when necessary. If pumped-water power generation is actively used for power operation, a more stable power system can be secured.
