  • A new 12a-dehydrorotenoid 1, 11-dihydroxy-9, 10-methylenedioxy-12a-dehydrorotenoid (1), together with a new isoflavonoid glycoside tectorigenin-7-O-${\beta}$-glucosyl-4'-O-${\beta}$-glucoside (3), were isolated and identified from the rhizomes of I. spuria (Zeal). In addition, 4 known compounds, tectorigenin (2) tectorigenin-7-O-${\beta}$-glucosyl $(1{\leftrightarrow}6)$ glucoside (4), tectoridin (a tectorigenin- 7-O-${\beta}$-glucoside) (5) and tectorigenin-4'-O-${\beta}$-glucoside (6) were isolated and identified for the first time from this plant. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined by spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, $^1H,\;^{13}C$NMR, DEPT, HMQC, NOESY, and HMBC experiments and MS spectrometry) and by comparison with literature data of known compounds. Compounds 2, 4, 5, and 6 are reported for the first time from this plant through the present study.

  • Polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids are wide spread in the plant kingdom, and interested recently because epidemiological studies have suggested correlations between the consumption of polyphenol-rich plant foods and the prevention of chronic diseases. Soy is a main source of isoflavonoids which are high dietary intake for the oriental population. In this study, anti-inflammatory action of sophoricoside, an isoflavone glycoside isolated from immature fruits of Sophora japonica (Leguminosae family), has been demonstrated. (omitted)

  • Five isoflavonoids, biochanin A-7-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1⟶6)-β-D-gluco- pyranoside (1), (-)-maackiain (2), calycosin (3), trifolirhizin (4) and genistein (5), were tested for antifungal activity against nine fungi. These compounds were isolated from the wood (compound 1 and 2) and from the bark (compound 3, 4 and 5) of S. japonica. According to the results of antifungal activity test, (-)-maackiain was evaluated as the best antifungal compound among the isolated compounds. In this regard, it could be mentioned that high antifungal activity of S. japonica wood extracts was originated from (-)-maackiain.

  • This research aimed to examine the isoflavonoid contents, antibacterial activities, and physiological activities of Cheonggukjang made from sword bean (CS). The effects of adding sword bean were compared with those of raw materials (RM), steamed materials (SM), and traditional Cheonggukjang (TC). In the case of the antibacterial activity on Gram-positive bacteria, the result of CS in ethanol extract was the highest in Bacillus cereus, and the result of water extract was the highest in Staphylococcus aureus. However, in the case of Gram-negative bacteria, Salmonella Typhimurium was the highest in all the extraction. Antioxidant activity and total flavonoid contents were present in the order of TC
