Condensing heat transfer characteristics of hydrocarbon refrigerants are experimentally investigated. Single component hydrocarbon refrigerants (propane, isobutane, butane and propylene) and binary mixtures of propane/isobutane and propane/butane are considered as test fluids. Local condensing heat transfer coefficients of selected refrigerants are obtained from overall conductance measurement. Average heat transfer coefficients at different mass fluxes and heat transfer rates are shown and compared with those of R22. Pure hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher values of heat transfer coefficient than R22. It is also found that there is a heat transfer degradation for hydrocarbon mixtures due to composition variation during condensation. Measured condensing heat transfer coefficients are compared with predicted values by available correlations. An empirical correlation for pure and mixed hydrocarbon is developed, and it shows good agreement with experimental data.
In this work, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of five hydrocarbon refrigerants of propylene, propane, isobutane, butane and dimethylether (DME) were measured at the liquid temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ on a 26 fpi low fin tube, Turbo-B, and Thermoexcel-E tubes. All data were taken from 80 to $10kW/m^2$ in the decreasing order of heat flux. The data of hydrocarbon refrigerants showed a typical trend that nucleate boiling HTCs obtained on enhanced tubes also increase with the vapor pressure. Fluids with lower reduced pressure such as DME, isobutane, and butane took more advantage of the heat transfer enhancement mechanism of enhanced tubes than those enhancement ratios of $2.3\sim9.4$ among the tubes tested due to its sub-channels and re-entrant cavities.
In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of flammable refrigerants of propylene, propane, isobutane, butane, DME, and HFC32 were measured on a horizontal plain tube, 26 fpi low fin tube, and Turbo-C tube. All data were taken at the temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3∼8$^{\circ}C$. Test results showed a typical trend that condensation HTCs of flammable refrigerants decrease with increasing wall subcooling. HFC32 had the highest HTCs among the tested refrigerants showing 44% higher HTCs than those of HCFC22 while DME showed 28% higher HTCs than those of HCFC22. HTCs of propylene and butane were similar to those of HCFC22 while those of propane and isobutane were similar to those of HFC134a. Based upon the tested data, Nusselt's equation is modified to predict the plain tube data within a deviation of 3%. For 26 fpi low fin tube, Beatty and Katz equation predicted the data within a deviation of 7.3% for all flammable refrigerants tested. The heat transfer enhancement factors for the 26 fpi low fin and Turbo-C tubes were 4.6∼5.7 and 4.7∼6.9 respectively for the refrigerants tested indicating that the performance of Turbo-C tube is the best among the tubes tested.
In this study, external condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of six flammable refrigerants of propylene (RI270), propane (R290), isobutane (R600a), butane (R600), dimethylether (RE170), and HFC32 were measured at the vapor temperature of $39^{\circ}C$ on a 1023 fpm low fin and Turbo-C tubes. All data were taken under the heat flux of $32\~116\;and\;42\~142kW/m^2$ for the low fin and Turbo-C tubes respectively. Flammable refrigerants' data obtained on enhanced tubes showed a typical trend that external condensation HTCs decrease with increasing wall subcooling. HFC32 and DME showed up to $30\%$ higher HTCs than those of HCFC22 due to their excellent thermophysical properties. Propylene, propane, isobutane, and butane showed similar or lower HTCs than those of HCFC22. Beatty and Katz' correlation predicted the HTCs of the flammable refrigerants obtained on a low fin tube within a mean deviation of $7.3\%$. Turbo-C tube showed the best performance due to its 3 dimensional surface geometry for fast removal of condensate.
Performance and heat transfer characteristics of an air conditioning system filled with hydro- carbon refrigerants are experimentally investigated. Single component hydrocarbon refrigerants (propane, isobutane, butane and propylene) and binary mixtures of propane/isobutane and propane/butane are considered as working fluids in the air conditioning system. Performances of each refrigerant are obtained at several compressor speeds and temperature levels of secondary heat transfer fluids. The cooling capacity and the coefficient of performance are obtained as test results. Heat transfer data of selected refrigerants are achieved from overall conductance measurement. Average heat transfer coefficients at different mass fluxes are shown and they are also displayed for different heat capacities of the system. Experimental results show that some hydrocarbon refrigerants have better characteristics than R22.
In this work, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of hydrocarbon refrigerants are measured from a horizontal smooth tube of 19.0 mm outside diameter. Tested pure refrigerants are Propylene, Propane, Isobutane, Butane and Dimethylether (DME). The pool temperature was maintained at saturation temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and heat flux was varied from $10kW/m^2$ to $80kW/m^2$ with an interval of $10kW/m^2$. Wall temperatures were measured directly by thermocouple hole of 0.5 mm out-diameter, 152 mm long and inserting ungrounded sheathed thermocouples from the side of the tube. Tested results show that HTCs of Propane, Propylene are 2.5%, 10.4% higher than those of R22 while those of Butane and Isobutane are 55.2%, 44.3% lower than those of R22 respectively. For pure refrigerants, new correlation can be applied to all of CFCs, HCFCS, HFCs, as well as hydrocarbons was developed. The mean deviation was 4.6%.
The performance of a refrigerant mixture of propane(R290)/isobutane(R600a) as a substitute for CFC12 was investigated in a domestic refrigerator with single evaporator. A thermodynamic cycle simulation indicated an increase in COP of a 1.7 to 2.4% with R-290/600a in the composition range of 0.2 to 0.6 mass fraction of R290 compared to CFC12. For the tests, two units($299{\ell}$, $465{\ell}$) were used. All refrigeration components remained the same throughout the tests, except that the length of capillary tube and amount of charge were changed for the mixture. The refrigerators were fully instrumented with more than 20 thermocouples, 2 pressure transducers, and watt/watt-hour meter for each refrigerator. 'Energy consumption test' and 'no load pulldown test' were performed under the same condition. The experimental results obtained with the same compressor indicated that R-290/600a mixture at 0.6 mass fraction of R290 showed a 3 to 5% increase in energy efficiency and a faster cooling speed compared to CFC12. The R-290/600a mixture showed a shorter compressor on-time and a lower compressor dome temperature than CFC12. In conclusion, the proposed hydrocarbon mixture seems to be an appropriate candidate to replace CFC12 without causing more environmental problems.
HC-SCR was conducted over Co-Pt/ZSM5 catalyst coated over 200 cpsi cordierite in the condition of atomspheric pressure and $200^{\circ}C-500^{\circ}C$. Weight ratio of Co/Pt determined from EDX analysis was 8/2, which was almost equal to the weight ratio at preparation step. XPS showed that nitrates within cobalt precursor and chlorine withn Pt precursor were removed. TEM result demonstrated that crystallite size of cobalt and Pt was under 5nm. Among these tested hydrocarbon reductants, isobutane ($i-C_4H_{10}$) showed the highest de-$NO_x$ yield of 80% under the condition of the mole ratio of reductant/NOx=1.0 at $180^{\circ}C$. De-$NO_x$ yield from HC-SCR was increased as the carbon number of hydrocarbon reductant was increased. The decrease of bonding energy between C and H of HC reductant played a role to increase of de-$NO_x$ yield, which indicated that the dissociation step of C-H bond of hydrocarbon molecule might be the rate determining step of HC-SCR. The increase of oxygen concentration in the feed resulted in the decrease of de-$NO_x$ yield but the increase of CO and $N_2O$ yield.
There are many methods of obtaining butadiene described in the literature. In the america it is produced largely from petroleum gases, i.e., by catalytic dehydrogenation of butene of butene-butane mixtures. Butadiene can be recovered from the $C_4$ residue of an olefin plant by distilling off a fraction containing most of the butadiene, catalytically hydrogenating the higher acetylenes to olefins and separating the product from other olefins and isobutane by extraction. Also it can be obtained by cracking naphtha and light oil. Among the individual dienes of commercial importance, 1, 3-butadiene is of first importance. It is used primarily for the production of polymers. In the present paper, it was investigated for a effect of the formation and the growth inhibition of popped corn polymer in butadiene extraction unit. As a result of study, inhibitors, $NaNO_2$ and TBC were good effective for inhibition of the formation and growth in popcorn polymer. The rational formula of popcorn polymer obtained was $(C_4H_6)_x$.
