Islamic Religiosity Scale, and Its Applied on the Relationship Between Religiosity and Selection of Islamic Bank

  • The purposes of this research are to develop a measurement of Islamic religiosity and applying these measurements to examine the relationship between religiosity and selection of the Islamic bank. Literature searches and in -depth interviews are used to obtain the statement item to build measurement. Furthermore, result of the religiosity measurement will be used to study the relationship between religiosity and the selection of the Islamic bank. Population of the study is Muslim who has bank(s) account. A total 375 questionnaires were distributed to the three groups of bank customers (125 respondents in each group). This res earch has successfully developed a measurement of religiosity, which is called Islamic Religiosity Scale (IRS). On the one hand, the study indicate that religiosity plays a significant role on the decision of customers to choose Islamic banks, because the degree of religiosity of Islamic bank customers is higher than conventional bank customers. Nevertheless, on other hand, this study also revealed that religiosity is not the only factor that influences customers to selecting the Islamic banks, because the degree of religiosity of Islamic bank customers do not differ significantly with customers who hold accounts in both bank.

  • As Islam supports fair trade, the Murabaha is the most popular and most common mode of Islamic financing. It is a contract of sale between the bank and its client for the sale of goods at a price plus an agreed profit margin for the bank. The contract involves the purchase of goods by the bank which then sells them to the client at an agreed mark-up. While their characteristics and values are unique, they are also subject to conventional measurement of efficacies. This study investigates how the primary health predictors of conventional banks under the Basel III regime could provide a positive means to assess the Murabaha funding and subsequently secure long-term profitability. This study constructed a path analysis (from 120 databases) to assess whether Islamic banks' leverage and capital adequacy may alter the Murabaha funding and increase stock equity directly and indirectly. The research findings are mixed where leverage does not alter the Murabaha funding but only affects the profitability; besides, capital adequacy increases the outgoing funding significantly but does not increase stock equity. Murabaha funding is essential to Islamic bank equity. This study implies Murabaha funding are expensed, despite increasing debts in Islamic banks.

Does Big Data Analytics Enhance Sustainability and Financial Performance? The Case of ASEAN Banks

  • This study analyzes the key drivers (commitment, integration of big data, green supply chain management, and green human resource practices) of sustainable capabilities and the influence to which these sustainable capabilities impact the banks' environmental and financial performance. Additionally, this study analyzes the impact of green management practices on the integration of big data technology with operations. The theory of dynamic capability was deployed to propose and empirically test the conceptual model. Data was collected through a self-administrated survey questionnaire from 319 participants employed at 35 banks located in six ASEAN countries. The findings indicate that big data analytics strategies have an impact on internal processes and banks' sustainable and financial performance. This study indicates that banks committed towards proper data monitoring of its clients achieve operational efficiency and sustainability goals. Moreover, our results confirm that banks practising green innovation strategies experience better environmental and economic performance as the employees of these banks have received advance green human resource training. Finally, our study found that internal and external green supply chain management practices have a positive impact on banks' environmental and financial performance, which confirms that ASEAN banks contributing in reduction of environmental impact through its operations will ultimately experience increased financial performance.

A Central Shariah Regulatory Authority for the Islamic Banks in Bangladesh: Legalization or Formation

  • This study aims to find out the legalization status of a central Shariah regulatory authority for the Islamic banks in Bangladesh. In this regard, the central bank can legalize the existing Centralized Shariah Board for Islamic Banks of Bangladesh (CSBIB) or form a new Centralized Shariah Supervisory Board (CSBB) under the management of the central bank in Bangladesh. Based on the data obtained by the semi-structured interviews, this research finds diversified opinions regarding the legalization of CSBIB or the formation of a new CSBB. Initially, without the law, it would be difficult to form CSSB under the central bank as the Islamic banks and banking environment are still not ready. In addition, it is difficult to legalize the existing CSBIB because the format of its structure is different from the CSSB structure in Malaysia and Bahrain. The existing banking company act authorizes the central bank to provide circulars regarding banking issues and it will be considered as an act. The central bank can legalize the existing CSBIB or form a new CSSB through a circular which will be helpful to monitor the overall Shariah issues. The presence of a CSSB will fulfill the expectations of all Islamic banks, and the concerned stakeholders.

Corporate Governance and Financial Stability of Islamic Banks in Asia

  • An economic system is a means by which societies or governments organize and distribute available resources, services, and goods across a geographic region or country. The Islamic financial system faces a number of challenges as part of its role as a tool for developing economic activities. This study intends to advance research by Lassoued (2018) by expanding the research population to include Islamic banks in Asia and adding new dimensions - the size of the independent commissioner and corporate governance. The population of this study is the 100 largest Islamic banks in Asia. Statistical calculations with the STATA application is used for data analysis. Based on the test results, it was found that the size of the sharia board and the independent board of directors did not affect the financial stability of Islamic banking companies. Another finding is that the size of the independent commissioner affects financial stability. This finding shows that commissioners have played an active role in the company, indicating that if the sharia banking company has an ideal number of independent commissioners, it will be advantageous to the company's stability and business sustainability.

Bank Capital, Efficiency and Risk: Evidence from Islamic Banks

  • This study aims to evaluate the relationship between bank capital, efficiency, and risk in Islamic banks. We use data from 129 Islamic banks in the world, retrieved from various data sources. We retrieved specific banking data from Moody's Analytics BankFocus and Thomson Reuters Eikon, while data at the country level was obtained from the World Bank website. This study uses various estimates both Pooled OLS (Ordinary Least Square) and Random Effect (RE). However, to overcome the issue of serial correlation which could cause bias in the results of the study, we used fixed-effect (FE) cluster estimates. The research results confirm the previous findings that bank capital positively affects bank stability (natural logarithm of Z-Score) and negatively affects credit risk (loan loss provision to total liabilities). The findings also show that efficiency has the same effect. The interaction test of bank capital and efficiency shows that efficiency encourages banks to reduce risk, including when bank capital is relatively lower. This finding is expected to have implications for the authorities to boost bank efficiency in addition to establishing several regulations related to capital. The efficiency implemented by the bank will encourage banks to act prudently so that the bank can maintain its performance through risk mitigation.

Service Quality Perception and Customer Satisfaction in Islamic Banks of Oman

  • Service quality of any institution is a pull factor for attracting and retaining the customer. The present study examines the customer satisfaction level toward the quality of service offered by the Islamic banks in Oman. It also aims to find out which dimension influences customer satisfaction more concerning the other dimension chosen for the study. To fulfil the need of the study, a structured questionnaire is distributed amongst 100 customers of Islamic banks. The random stratified sampling technique is used for the collection of the data. The collected data is analyzed using the correlation and the multiple linear regression techniques. The result of the study indicates that timely service provided by the banking personnel has a mean score of 4.57, bank staff readiness to serve the customer has a mean score of 4.36, and the security of the banking operation has a mean score of 4.37 occupies the highest rank in their respective dimension chosen for the study. The study reveals that all three dimensions of quality of service represented by Services Reliability, Services Responsiveness and Services Security have a positive and significant correlation with customer satisfaction. The regression results also indicate that all three dimensions influence customer satisfaction of the Islamic banks.

Enhancing Customers' Satisfaction Using Loyalty Rewards Programs: Evidence from Jordanian Banks

  • The study aims to investigate loyalty rewards programs on customers' satisfaction in Jordanian banks, and to investigate the statistical differences in loyalty rewards programs and customers' satisfaction according to demographics such as age, sex, education level, duration of engagement with bank, and the type of bank. The study is based on the data obtained from the sample. The questionnaire is the tool for collecting data from the respondents. The study materials include website resources, regular books, journals, and articles. The study population consists customers in the banking sector. The figures indicate that number of actual customers reaches 2.06 million. The sample size requirement is 386 items. Customers are split between traditional and Islamic banks, with 231 and 155 customers respectively. The stratified random sampling technique and the structural equations modeling methodology were used. The results show moderated impact of the loyalty rewards programs on customers' satisfaction. The results show statistical differences in the loyalty rewards programs and customers' satisfaction according to the engagement period with the bank only. The findings suggest better managing the loyalty programs and developing one credit card for all banks in Jordan.

방글라데시 상업은행의 군집행동에 관한 분석 (Herd Behavior in the Bangladeshi Loan Market)

  • 본고는 방글라데시 은행 대출의 군집행동을 실증분석하였다. 실증분석에는 2001년부터 2014년 2분기까지 국책은행, 국내민간은행, 외국계은행, 이슬람은행 등 방글라데시 상업은행의 총대출, 도시대출, 농촌대출 패널자료를 사용하였다. 국내민간은행과 외국계은행의 총대출 및 도시대출의 경우 2008년 글로벌금융위기 기간 동안에 대출 동조현상이 뚜렷이 나타났다. 이는 이들 은행유형이 국책은행보다 수익성을 중시하고 정부 및 중앙은행으로부터 엄격한 감독규제을 적용받으므로 불확실성이 커진 금융위기기간에 은행이 독자적으로 대출태도를 결정하기보다는 자신과 유사한 은행의 대출결정을 참조하면서 대출태도를 결정하였음을 보여준다. 반면, 이슬람은행의 경우 2002년부터 2003년에 이르는 기간에 대출 쏠림현상이 커졌으며, 2008년 금융위기기간에 특별한 쏠림현상을 보이지 않았다. 이는 기존문헌에서 지적하듯이 이슬람은행의 수익 및 영업 구조가 일반 은행과 다르기 때문으로 해석할 수 있다. 한편, 농촌대출의 경우 군집행동의 패턴이 총대출 및 도시대출과 상당히 달랐는데, 무엇보다도 군집행동이 지속되지 않고 단속적으로 발생하였다는 것이 큰 특징이다. 이러한 차이점은 농촌 대출의 특성에 기인한다. 즉, 농업종사자들의 대출상환능력은 과거 대출이력에 기반한 신용도보다는 해당 연도의 작황에 따라 결정되고, 대출 주기가 농사주기와 연동되어 대출기간이 짧다. 따라서 대출의 군집행동과 같은 일정 대출패턴이 중장기간 발생하지 않고 단속적으로 발생한다고 이해할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 대출 연관성이 은행유형간에 존재하는 지를 알아본 결과, 국책은행, 외국계은행, 이슬람은행의 대출 결정은 국내민간은행의 대출증감에 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 국내민간은행 대출결정이 대출시장의 불확실성을 완화시키는 정보로서의 기능을 한다는 것을 알 수 있다.

The Foundation of a Fair Mudarabah Profit Sharing Ratio: A Case Study of Islamic Banks in Indonesia

  • This research aims to expose the Islamic perspective on the concept of justice on the Mudarabah contract's profit-sharing ratio. In certain verses in Al-Qur'an, Islamic values in Muamalah, the rules dictated by the Qur'an and its practices, and explanations rendered (more commonly known as Sunnah) by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and Sahabah (the companions of the Prophet Muhammad), and Fiqh Axiom (rules) in Muamalah (Islamic jurisprudence), are used as the instruments of sharia to achieve the study objective. Islamic monetary establishments in Indonesia are still not in full consistency with the Shariah principles, significantly as far as satisfying equity and justice by Islamic banks in mudarabah contract (with clients). The ignominy is the nisbah (ratio) between the capital proprietor and the capital director. There are models or propositions to decide the benefit (profit)-sharing proportion. Nevertheless, none of them explains or specifies the possibility of equity/justice in the profit-sharing ratio. This research utilizes an explorative and subjective methodology that contributes to the philosophical premise of deciding the profit-sharing fairness. The elements of a just ratio for the Mudharabah contract are mutual willingness, the existence of negotiation, and the level of advantages and risks of the labor.
