  • This study was carried out to get the basic information of irrigation plans for the red pepper, such as optimum irrigation level and irrigation requirement in Taegu and Kyungpook province. In this study, red peppers were cultivated in 6 PVC pot lysimeters filled with 60cm deep clay loam soil. Four tensiometers were installed in each plot to measure the soil water pressure head. Field measurements were made during the period June 6 to October 31, 1988 at the experimental farm of Kvungpook National University. Six levels of irrigation were used. They were PF 1.8-2.0, PF 2.2-2.4, PF 2.8-3.0, FC-PF.1.7, FC-PF 2.2, and FC-PF 2.7. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows : 1. In case of irrigation levels of narrow ranges of water contents, the higher the soil water content was, the larger the ET was. Hut in case of the irrigation levels returning to the field capacity, the lager the PF value of irrigation point was, the larger the ET was. Considering ET, yield and weight per fruit, the latter is much better than the former irrigation method. 2. The mean daily ET and mean ET ratio for each 10-day period showed that the maximum value occured in the last of August. The ranges of those were 3.74-14.64 mm/day and 0.87-3.40, respectively. These values showed that small during the early stage of growth, large during the middle stage and getting smaller in the last stage. 3. In case of irrigation levels of narrow ranges of water contents, the increase of irrigation water supplied increased the ET. The relationship between the two showed nearly straight line. Most of irrigated water was consumed as ET and the rest as percolation. But, in case of irrigation levels returning to the field capacity, the higher the PF value of irrigation point was, the larger the ET ratio was. However, their relationship didn't show straight line. 4. The irrigation level of PC - PP 2.7 was found to be the optimum irrigation level with respect to the yield, the weight per fruit, stem length, irrigation requirement and percolation quantity. In this case, mean daily ET and mean ET ratio were 6.79 mm/day (total 10052 mm) and 1.67, respectively. The maximum mean daily ET and mean ET ratio for 10-day period were 14.64 mm/day and 3.40, respectively, in the last of August, and the maximum daily ET was 2126 mm/day on August 24. 5. In case of PC - PP 2.7 which is found the optimum irrigation level, mean irrigation water required, mean ET and mean percolation water quantity were 7.44 mm/day, 6.79 mm/day(91.3% of irrigation water), and 0.38 mm/day (5.5% of it), respectively.

  • Agricultural drought is a natural phenomenon that is difficult to observe and quantitatively express, and agricultural water use is high and usage patterns are diverse, so even if there is a lack of rainfall. The frequency and severity of agricultural drought are increased during the irrigation period where the demand for agricultural water is generated, and reasonable and efficient management of agricultural water for stable water supply is required. As one method to solve the water shortage of agricultural water in an unstructured method, it is necessary to analyze the appropriate supply amount and supply method through simulation from the intake works to the canals organization and paddy field. In this study, irrigation efficiency was analyzed for irrigation systems from April to September over the past three years from the Musu Reservoir located in Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do and Pungjeon Reservoir located in Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. SWMM (Storm Water Management Model) was used to collect agricultural water, and irrigation efficiency analysis was conducted using adequacy indicators, and water supply vulnerability. The results of the agricultural water distribution simulation, irrigation efficiency and water supply vulnerability assessment are thought to help the overall understanding of the agricultural water supply and the efficient water management through preliminary analysis of the methods of agricultural water supply in case of drought events.

  • Monitored data (rainfall runoff and water quality) from 4 different paddy sites over 3 years were compared to analyze the effect of irrigation water management on irrigation supply and rainfall runoff quality in Korea. The system of rice intensification water management was adopted at one site (SRI) while the conventional water management method was used for rice culture at the other three sites (CT, SD and HD). The soil texture at SRI, CT and SD was sandy loam while that at HD was silt loam. The average reduction of irrigation supply at SRI compared with CT, SD and HD during the 3 years studied was 49%, 51% and 55%, respectively. The average event mean concentration (EMC) at SRI compared with that at CT, SD and HD was decreased by 35% (BOD), 44% (COD), 47% (SS), 19% (TN) and 38% (TP). The correlation between rainfall runoff and the measured non-point source (NPS) pollutants was very good in general. The comparison revealed that SRI water management significantly reduced both irrigation supply and EMC in rainfall runoff. Paddy NPS pollution was closely related to factors that induce runoff such as rainfall and irrigation supply. It was concluded that SRI management could be an effective and practical option to cope with both water shortage due to climate change and water quality improvement in rural watersheds. However, further studies are recommended in large irrigation districts for use in the development and implementation of NPS pollution policies since the data was collected from field sized paddies.

  • The impacts of climate change on upland crops is great significance for water resource planning, estimating crop water demand and irrigation scheduling. The objective of this study is to predict upland crop evapotranspiration, effective rainfall and net irrigation requirement for upland under climate change, and changes in the temporal trends in South Korea. The changes in consumptive use and net irrigation requirement in the six upland crops, such as Soybeans, Maize, Potatoes, Red Peppers, Chinese Cabbage (spring and fall) were determined based on the soil moisture model using historical meteorological data and climate change data from the representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios. The results of this study showed that the average annual upland crop evapotranspiration and net irrigation requirement during the growing period for upland crops would increase persistently in the future, and were projected to increase more in RCP 8.5 than those in RCP 4.5 scenario, while effective rainfall decreased. This study is significant, as it provides baseline information on future plan of water resources management for upland crops related to climate variability and change.

  • Since the salinity of irrigation water is a critical constraint to the production of certain vegetable crops, salinity was considered as one of the most important factors of irrigation water. The purpose of this study were to monitor and assess the effects of saline irrigation water on strawberry and red radish growth in protected cultivation. One control and three treatments, which were differentiated according to the level of salinity in irrigated water, were employed for each vegetable to assess the effects of the irrigation with saline water. Monitoring has shown that using irrigation water with salinity above a certain level causes excessive accumulation of sodium (Na+) in both strawberry and red radish. Increased Na+ content was analyzed to be able to decrease the sugar content in strawberry. In addition, the salinity higher than the threshold level of irrigation water was found to reduce the growth and yield of strawberry and red radish. This study could contribute to suggest criteria for safe use of saline water in protected cultivation, although long-term monitoring is needed to get more representative results.

  • This research was performed to determine the appropriate daily last irrigation time to enhance the plant growth and the water and fertilizer use efficiencies in coir bag culture for tomato plant. The time to finish the daily irrigation was set by 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours before the sunset. The water content in the substrate was greatly affected by the last irrigation time. The earlier the last time, the greater the daily fluctuation of water contents in the substrate. The daily irrigation times were not affected by using irrigation management system controlled by drainage electrodes or the physiochemical properties of coir. The growth characteristics were not significantly different among the treatments. The highest marketable yields were obtained in the treatment finishing two hours before sunset, and the lowest yields were obtained in the the treatment finishing 4 hours before sunset. Based on the result from surveying quantity of irrigated water for 128 days of the experiment period, the water and fertilizer use efficiencies were lowest in the treatment finishing 4 hours before sunset, and the highest in the treatment finishing 2 hours before sunset. In terms of plant growth, yields, water and fertilizer use efficiencies, 2 hours before sunset treatment was determined as the most economical and desirable irrigation schedule.

  • Water stress has become a major concern in agriculture. Korea suffers from limited agricultural water supply, and wastewater reuse has been recommended as an alternative solution.A study was performed to examine the effects of microorganism concentration in the ponded-water of a paddy rice field with reclaimed-water irrigation for evaluating the microbial risk to farmers and neighborhoodchildren. Most epidemiological studies were performed based on an upland field, and they may not directly applicable to paddy fields. Beta-Poisson model was used to estimate the microbial risk of pathogen ingestion. Their risk value increased significantly high level after irrigation and precipitation. It implies that agricultural activities such as plowing, and fertilizing, and precipitation need be practiced a few days after irrigation considering health risks. The results about field application of the microbial risk assessment using E. coli showed difference according to monitoring time and treatment plot. Result of the microbial risk assessment showed that risk values of ground-water and reclaimed secondary waste water irrigation were lower than directly use of wastewater treatment plants' effluent. This paper should be viewed as a first step in the application of quantitative microbial risk assessment of E. coli to wastewater reuse in a paddy rice farming.

  • To investigate the status of irrigation water use and the degree of repeated use of irrigation water, observations for water balance analysis were made during the irrigation periods in 1986 and 1987 crop year. The total area of studied site is 1,441 ha. The site is a major portion of Jedaecheon basin which is located in Bubuk-myeon, Miryang-gun, Gyeongnam Province. The studied area was subdivided into six small blocks. The water balance analysis for these subdivided blocks were carried out considering characteristics of each block. Obtained results are as follow: 1.In mountainous sloppy paddy area(less than 7% slope), the surface inflow was 5A mm/day in average that is one third of the surface inflow into plain paddy area ; 16.7 mm/day. 2.The surface inflows at the vegetative stage and the ripening stage were 15.5 mm/day and 10.4 mm/day, respectively. Those figures were larger than the actual consumptive use at respective same stages ; 13.3 mm/day and 9.2 mm/day, respectively. Whereas, the surface inflow at generative stage was 12.5 mm/day which was less than 14.0 mm/day ; the actual consumptive use. 3.The range of the variation of water storage term was 1 mm/day. This means that there were no change in depth of ponded water on paddy fields. The relationship between the variation of water storage(AS) and the variation of ground water table(H) could be expressed as follow: : AS=0.14H+0.26 4.The ground water inflow: into the transition region ; paddy fields which are located continuously from the mountainous area to the plain area, was larger than the out flow from this region, in general. Rowever, in the plain region where the ground water utilization was predominant, the ground water outflow from this region was larger than inflow: to this region. The relationship between the ground water flow(G2- G1) and the consumptive use in large paddy area(D1-D2) could be expressed as follow: (G2-G1) =0.95(D1-D2) -3.79

  • Effect of reclaimed sewage on the paddy rice culture was examined by field experiment for two consecutive years. The domestic sewage was treated by the constructed wetland and the effluent of the treatment wetland was used for irrigation water. The reclaimed sewage was diluted before irrigation in the first year and it was used without dilution in the second year experiment. Growth components and yields were compared against the control plot where conventional method was applied. And also soil characteristics of the plots before and after reclaimed sewage irrigation were analyzed Generally addition of the reclaimed sewage irrigation didn't affect paddy rice culture adversely and even enhancement was observed. Fertilization was thought to be important factor for rice culture rather than irrigation water quality. Conventional fertilization and reclaimed sewage irrigation which contained high nutrient concentration resulted in better growth and more yield. Unlike widespread concern lodging did not happen even in the case of irrigation with average 90mg/L of T-N and conventional fertilization. Soil characteristics changed after irrigation and significant EC increasing was observed for the reclaimed sewage irrigation plots. From soil analyses salt accumulation could be a more potential problem than nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus in the use of reclaimed sewage irrigation. Overall reclaimed sewage irrigation was thought to be one of practical alternatives for the ultimate disposal of sewage in rural area.
