  • The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of wastewater reuse for the vegetable farming. The study region, about 250 ha in size, is located on the west coast of Jejudo, Korea. Major agricultural products of the study area are the cabbage, broccoli, garlic and onion. To confirm the feasibility of wastewater reuse, the drought duration and the water requirement analysis were conducted respectively. The average annual precipitation of the study region (1,121 mm) was smaller than that of Jeju island (1,975 mm). The drought duration for a ten-year return period in October through November was more than 20 days. The water requirement for irrigation was calculated by the FAQ Penman-Monteith method which took into account the cultivated crops, planting system, and meteorological conditions of the study region. The water requirement for a ten-year return period was estimated 4.7 mm/day and the water demand for irrigation was $4,584\;m^3/day$. As a result, the irrigation water for the crops was insufficient during their breeding season, especially in October through November. Thus, the result indicated that the study region required the alternative water supply such as wastewater reuse during the non-rainy season. As drought continues to place considerable stress on the availability of fresh water supplies in the study region, irrigation with reclaimed wastewater will play an important role in helping to meet future water demands.

  • Very important factor for crop cultivation are water, nutrient and temperature. However, the essential factor for crop cultivation is water management. Water management is the most important and difficult problems in crop cultivation. The water saving irrigation manual can be used with easy to the farmer and who want automatic irrigation without soil sampling and any kinds of sensors measuring soil water status. The water requirement of red pepper cultivated in plastic film house is different according to soil texture, area as well as climate condition and growth stage. And, the measurement of potential evapo-transpiration (PET) and crop coefficient (Kc) to decide optimum irrigation schedule is very difficult. Results : The average PET during 30 years of northern region of korea for the red pepper cultivation was a $2.31mm\;day^{-1}$. The water saving irrigation manual as water saving is possible, those irrigation interval and amount of irrigation according to growing season and soil texture, are developed using the lysimeter experiments carried out by the RDA for 11 years about potential evapo-transpiration, Kc for the northern region of korea.

  • This study was carried out to get the basic information of irrigation plans for upland crops such as the optimum irrigation level and the project water requirement. Red peppers and cucumbers were cultivated in PVC pot lysimeters filled with 60cm deep clay loam soil. Four tensiometers were installed in each pot to measure the soil water pressure head. Six levels of irrigation were used. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows: 1.The optimum irrigation level. The irrigation level of FC-PF2.7 was found to be the optimum level for both red pepper and cucumber with respect to the yield and the weight per fruit. In case of FC-PF2.7, total ET during the irrigation period were 1005.2mm for red pepper, and 429.6mm for cucumber, respectively. 2.soil moisture extraction patterns. Average soil moisture extraction patterns (SMEP)during the irrigation period were from 1st soil layer 43% : 32% : 16% : 9% for red pepper and 39% : 34% : 15% : 12% for cucumber, respectively. The extraction ratio of the upper soils showed very large values during the early stage of growth and decreased largely during the middle stage, and became larger in the last stage. 3.The project water requirement. Among the reference crop evapotranspiration(ETo) computation methods presented by FAO, the Penman method was found to be the best. The effective rainfall was computed by a modified USDA-SCS curve number equation. Availability ratios of the total rainfall during irrigation season were 59.2% for red pepper and 48.9% for cucumber, respectively. Net project water requirement of design year are 837.3mm for red pepper. and 502.Smm for cucumber, respectively.

  • Irrigation control plays an important role in improving productivity of paprika which is very sensitive to moisture condition. Among environmental factors, light intensity and distribution are not easily controlled and showed a big difference depending on season and region. For adequate irrigation control, therefore, transpiration and irrigation amounts considering light environmental data should be estimated. In current study, modified transpiration model was used for more precise estimation of transpiration. Seasonal transpiration and irrigation amounts at different regions were compared by using light environmental data provided from Korea Meteorological Administration. The transpiration amount in summer was rather smaller than those in spring and autumn seasons in Korea due to large deviations in light intensity as well as rainy period in summer. Irrigation system capacities at various regions could be recommended by using the transpiration amount in the spring having the longest photoperiod in the year. These results will be useful to the design of irrigation system and optimization of input energy in greenhouse.

  • Climate change has continued to impact meteorological factors like rainfall in many countries including Nigeria. Thus, altering the rainfall patterns which subsequently affect the crop yield. Maize is an important cereal grown in northern Nigeria, along with sorghum, rice, and millet. Due to the challenge of water scarcity during the dry season, it has become critical to design appropriate strategies for planning, developing, and management of the limited available water resources to increase the maize yield. This study, therefore, determines the quantity of water required to produce maize from planting to harvesting and the impact of drought on maize during different growth stages in the region. Rainfall data from six rain gauge stations for a period of 36 years (1979-2014) was considered for the analysis. The standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI) is used to evaluate the severity of drought. Using the CROPWAT model, the evapotranspiration was calculated using the Penman-Monteith method, while the crop water requirements (CWRs) and irrigation scheduling for the maize crop was also determined. Irrigation was considered for 100% of critical soil moisture loss. At different phases of maize crop growth, the model predicted daily and monthly crop water requirements. The crop water requirement was found to be 319.0 mm and the irrigation requirement was 15.5 mm. The CROPWAT 8.0 model adequately estimated the yield reduction caused by water stress and climatic impacts, which makes this model appropriate for determining the crop water requirements, irrigation planning, and management.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum irrigation method for propagation of cutting strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ Duch. cv. Maehyang) plantlet in summer season. The cutting strawberry plantlets were planted in 24-cell tray ($60{\times}34{\times}10cm$) filled with commercial mixed medium (Tosilee) and placed in semi closed-type small plastic tunnel. Each semi closed-type small plastic tunnel was treated as follows; control (non-treatment), over head irrigation (twice a day), capillary mats irrigation (twice a day), or fog irrigation (30 minutes turn on and 10 minutes off from 8:00 to 18:00). The strawberry plantlets were rooted during 8 days in the semi closed-type small plastic tunnel, and then plastic film was removed. Growth parameters, such as plant height, root length, number of primary roots, petiole length, leaf length, leaf width, crown diameter, SPAD, leaf area, fresh and dry weights of the shoot and root, were measured at 61 days after cutting. Relative humidity in tunnel was high in the order by fog irrigation, over head irrigation, capillary mats, and the control as 72.5, 56.3, 45.8, and 29% on average, respectively. However, the air temperature was similar in all treatments. On the 4 and 8 days, the rooting rate of strawberry plantlet was significantly higher in the over head irrigation and fog irrigation treatments. Plant height, petiole length, crown diameter, and leaf area were highest in the over head irrigation and fog irrigation treatments. In addition, fresh and dry weights of shoot were greater in over head irrigation and fog irrigation treatments than the others. Dry weight of root was differed significantly heaviest in the fog irrigation treatment. However, root length, no. of primary roots, SPAD value, and fresh weight of root were not significantly different in all treatments. These results indicated that growth and rooting for propagation of cutting strawberry plantlet 'Maehyang' were best achievement in the over head irrigation and fog irrigation treatments.

  • Also, t-cincreaseisdecreasein order In hydroponics, the accumulation of inorganic ions in the root zone are closely related to the irrigation volume. Therefore, the effects of irrigation volume on the growth and yield of tomatoes are very signigicant. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of irrigation volume on inorganic ions of root zone in hydroponic culture using coir substrate. The irrigation volume was adjusted to 4 levels depending on the integrated solar radiation for each growth period. The drainage ratio was calculated by daily amount of irrigation and drainage. The higher irrigation volume is, drainage ratio and water absorption tended to increase. But, the water absorption in the treatment of high irrigation volume was decreased in February and March compared to the treatment of medium high irrigation volume. By calculating monthly average irrigation volume and the drainage ratio, 120 to 1$40J/cm^2$ in January, 100 to $120J/cm^2$ in February, 80 to $100J/cm^2$ in March, 70 to $90J/cm^2$ in April and 60 to $75J/cm^2$ in May was detected as appropriate irrigation volume ranges which drainage ratio was 20-30%. The higher irrigation volume, the lower the concentration of ions decrease, which could prevent the accumulation of nutrients in the root zone. However, due to the characteristics of the coir substrate that absorbs ions, concentration of ions was significantly high when the drainage ratio was 20-30%. However, concentrations of P and K were sometimes lower in the drainage than that of irrigation water regardless of the treatment. Mg and S were the most highly accumulated ions even in the treatment of high irrigation volume. In low radiation season, there was no difference in the ion concentration in the drainage depending on the irrigation volume. In high radiation season, the lower irrigation volume, resulted to the higher ion concentration in the drainage. After March, it was difficult to prevent the increase of ions concetration in the drainage by only adjusting irrigation volume. Thus, it is necessary to decrease the EC of irrigation solution to prevent the accumulation of nutrients in the root zone.

  • The impacts of climate change on paddy irrigation water demands in Korea have been analyzed. High-resolution ($27{\times}27\;km$) climate data for the SRES A2 scenario produced by the Korean Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) and the observed baseline climatology dataset were used. The outputs from the ECHO-G GCM model were dynamically downscaled using the MM5 regional model by the METRI. The Geographic information system (GIS) was used to produce maps showing the spatial changes in irrigation water requirements for rice paddies. The results showed that the growing season mean temperature for future scenarios was projected to increase by $1.5^{\circ}C$ (2020s), $3.3^{\circ}C$ (2050s) and $5.3^{\circ}C$ (2080s) as compared with the baseline value (1971~2000). The growing season rainfall for future scenarios was projected to increase by 0.1% (2020s), 4.9% (2050s) and 19.3% (2080s). Assuming cropping area and farming practices remain unchanged, the total volumetric irrigation demand was projected to increase by 2.8% (2020s), 4.9% (2050s) and 4.5% (2080s). These projections are contrary to the previous study that used HadCM3 outputs and projected decreasing irrigation demand. The main reason for this discrepancy is the difference with the projected climate of the GCMs used. The temporal and spatial variations were large and should be considered in the irrigation water resource planning and management in the future.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect on evapotranspiration and yield of soybean according to different soil water conditions, and to find the optimum time and amount for irrigation in soybean cultivation. The difference between potential evapotranspiration (PET) and maximum evapotranspiration (MET) during growing season of soybean planted in lysimeter was higher during reproductive stage than during vegetative one. The maximum crop coefficient was obtained at beginning seed stage of soybean. Soil water coefficient of irrigation treatment was higher than that of non-irrigation treatment during soybean growth stage in field experiment. Grain yield was highest in lysimeter due to its high water use efficiency and evapotranspiration rate.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of several kinds of calcium foliar application and drip irrigation on the bitter pit incidence of apple. CaCl2, inorganic calcium compound, was the most effective in increasing the calcium concentration in the fruit flesh, and reducing bitter pit incidence. Calcium spray in the later part of the growing season was more effective than in the earlier part. Drip irrigation applied during the dry spells increased calcium concentration in the fruit flesh, and reduced bitter pit incidence.
