The alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay, called the comet assay, has been applied to detect DNA damage induced by a number of chemicals and biological factors in vivo and in vitro. The DNA damage was analysed by tail moment (TM) and tail length (TL), which were markers of DNA strand breaks in SCGE. Human, mouse and rat peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) were irradiated with different doses of $^{60}Co$${\gamma}$-rays, e.g. 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gy at a dose rate of 1 Gy/min. A dose-dependent increase in TM (p<0.01) and TL (p<0.01) was obtained at all the radiation doses (1-8 Gy) in human, mouse and rat PBLs. Mouse PBLs were more sensitive than human PBLs which were in turn more sensitive than rat PBLs when the treated dosages were 1 and 2 Gy. However, human PBLs were more sensitive than mouse PBLs which were in turn more sensitive than rat PBLs when the irradiation dosages were 4 and 8 Gy. Data from all three species could be fitted to a linear-quadratic model. These results indicated that there may be inherent differences in the radio-sensitivity among PBLs of mammalian species.
We looked into the content change of microelements participating in the metabolism among the impacts of radiation energy on living bodies. We irradiated X-rays of 1 Gy, 5 Gy and 10 Gy to the whole bodies of mice, and then analyzed the liver tissues. We found that the microelement content had changed in some elements compared with the control group. When it came to changes by radiation dose, there was no significant change with the absorbed level of 1 Gy, but the higher absorbed levels of 5 Gy and 10 Gy reduced the content of Ca and Mn. In particular, the Ca content was reduced the most, apparently causing symptoms such as muscle tension and chronic headache, etc. The increased element was Al, which was found to have increased by 100%. In regard to the content change according to the time elapsed after irradiation, the contents of Fe, Ba, etc. showed the tendency of reduction. The content of Cd, a harmful element, increased by 25%, and it seemed that the element was involved in the calcium metabolism. Therefore, cell damage by radiation energy is determined to have an impact on the content change of microelements and considered to be partly related to a cause of precursor symptoms.
When a metal oxide field effect transistor (MOSFET) is exposed to ionizing radiation, electron/hole pairs are generated in its oxide layer. The slow moving holes of them are trapped in the oxide layer of p-MOSFET and appear as extra charges that change the characteristics of the transistor. The radiation-induced charges directly impact the threshold (turn-on) voltage of the transistor. This paper describes the use of the radiation-induced threshold voltage change as an accumulated radiation dose monitoring sensor. Two kinds of commercial p-type MOSFETS were tested in a Co-60 gamma irradiation facility to see their capabilities as a radiation dosimeter. We found that the transistors showed good linearity in their threshold voltage shift characteristics with radiation dose. The results demonstrate the potential use of commercial p-MOSFETS as inexpensive radiation sensors for the first time.

By controlling both the means of grafting and the cast-solution components, no degradation and dimensional change of radiation-induced graft polymerization were found. The electric resistance of styrene-cellulose acetate grafts increases with increasing styrene content, while those for the hydrophilic monomers show no marked effect. In comparison with the grafted cellulose acetate membrane by simultaneous irradiation method, the appearance of the grafted membrane by post-polymerization method was not markedly changed irrespective of the percent of grafting and radiation dose of electron beam or ${\gamma}$-ray. The combination of crosslinking agents such as divinyl benzene (OB) or trimethyl propane triacrylate (TMPT) in the VP:St:BPO system leads to gradual increase of the percent of grafting. The activation energy for grafting of St:VP:BPO solution onto cellulose acetate membrane was determined to be about 21.8 Kcal/mole over the range of 55$^{\circ}$-8$0^{\circ}C$. The initial rate of grafting (in %/hr) is proportional to the power 0.76 for dose intensities.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes including progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), partial response, and complete response in patients who underwent radiation therapy (RT) for mycosis fungoides (MF). Also, we sought to find prognostic factors for clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Total 19 patients confirmed with MF between 1999-2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical and treatment characteristics, clinical outcomes, and and toxicities were analyzed. Results: Eleven patients were treated with total skin electron beam radiotherapy (TSEBT) and 8 patients with involved field radiation therapy (IFRT) with median dose of 30 Gy, respectively. The median time interval from diagnosis to RT was 2.6 months (range, 0.4 to 87.3 months). The overall response rate was 100%; 11 patients (57.9%) had a complete response and 8 patients (42.1%) a partial response. The presence of positive lymph node at the time of consultation of RT was associated with lower OS (p = 0.043). In multivariate analysis, PFS was significantly lower for patients with increased previous therapies experienced following RT (p = 0.019) and for patients showing PR during RT (p = 0.044). There were no reported grade 3 or more skin toxicities related with RT. Conclusion: Both IFRT and TSEBT are effective treatment for MF patients. Patients with short disease course before RT or complete response during RT are expected to have longer PFS. Positive lymph node status at the initiation of RT was associated woth poor OS, suggesting other treatment modalities such as low-dose RT for patients with low life-expectancy.
Yung Nok Lee (Dept. of Biology, Korea University) : Studies on the phosphate metabolism in Chlorella, with special reference to polyphosphate. Kor. J. Microbiol., Vol.2, No.1, p1-11 (1964). 1. Uniformly $^{32}P$-labeled Chlorella cells which were irradiated with Cobalt-60 gamma-rays of about 70, 000 $\gamma$ dose, were further grown in a standard "cold" medium ("hot".rarw."cold"), and some portions of the algae were taken out at the begining of, and at intervals during the culture, and subjected to analyze the contents of $^{32}P$- and total P in various fractions of the cell materials. Results obtained were compared with those of nonirradiated normal cells. 2. Amounts of phosphate in various fractions of the nonirradiated normal Chlorella cells were measured using uniformly $^{32}P$--labeled cells. Analysis of the $^{32}P$--labeled algal cells showed that the highest value in P-content was the fraction of RNA followed by those of lipid, polyphosphate "C" polyphosphate "B", DNA, nucleotidic labile phosphate compounds, polyphosphate "A" and protein. It was observed that content of total polyphosphates in a single Chlorella cell was almost equal to RNA-P content in the cell, and the amount of RNA-P was almost equal to ten times of DNA-P content. 3. When the $^{32}P$--labeled algae which were irradiated with gamma-rays were grown in a normal "cold" medium, phosphate contents in the fraction of DNA, nucleotidic labile phosphate compounds and protein decreased markedly, while the contents of phosphate in the fractions of polyphosphate "C" and potyphosphate "B" increased in comparison with those of unirradiated normal cells. So, it was considered that the pretreatment of above mentioned dose of gamma-ray inhibited DNA and protein synthesis from polyphosphate in Chlorella cells. 4. Proceeding the culture of $^{32}P$--labeled Chlorella in a "cold" standard medium, whose synthetic activity of DNA and protein from polyphosphate was disturded by gamma-ray irradiation, the amounts of $^{32}P$-in the fraction of polyphosphate "C" increased, in contrast with those of polyphosphate "B" fraction. In order to establish a dose limits for subsequent induced mutation research itl Pyricularia oryzae, X-ray sensitivity of the conidia and the vegetative hypae of the fungus, race N-1, was investigated. Conidia of the fungus irradiated with X-rays reduced significantly in spore germination inversely with radiation doses. A severe suppression of conidia germination in about $80\%$ was found at the dose of 120kR, and the rests of the conidia produce very short and lysed germ tubes. A stimulated effect was observed in the elongation of hyphae from the conidia of 10 kR irradiation at initial stage of the growth. The radiosensitivity of hyphae was exremely higher than that of conidia with the increase of radiation doses. It was also recognized that the frequency of X-ray induced mutation in pathogenicity was directly proportional to radiation doses.
In this study, the authors attempted to produce a medical radiation shielding fiber that can be produced at a nanosize scale and that is, unlike lead, harmless to the human body. The performance of the proposed medical radiation shielding fiber was then evaluated. First, diamagnetic bismuth oxide, an element which, among elements that have a high atomic number and density, is harmless to the human body, was selected as the shielding material. Next, 10-100 nm sized nanoparticles in powder form were prepared by ball milling the bismuth oxide ($Bi_2O_3$), the average particle size of which is $1-500{\mu}m$, for approximately 10 minutes. The manufactured bismuth oxide was formed into a colloidal solution, and the radiation shielding fabric was fabricated by curing after coating the solution on one side or both sides of the fabric. The thicknesses of the shielding sheets prepared with bismuth oxide were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 1.0 mm. An experimental method was used to measure the absorbed dose and irradiation dose by using the lead equivalent test method of X-ray protection goods presented by Korean Industrial Standards; the resultant shielding rate was then calculated. From the results of this study, the X-ray shielding effect of the shielding sheet with 0.1 mm thickness was about 55.37% against 50 keV X-ray, and the X-ray shielding effect in the case of 1.0 mm thickness showed shielding characteristics of about 99.36% against 50 keV X-ray. In conclusion, it is considered that nanosized-bismuth radiation shielding fiber developed in this research will contribute to reducing the effects of primary X-ray and secondary X-ray such as when using a scattering beam at a low level exposure.
The change of the nitrogen-related centers and the color change of electron beam irradiated type Ia natural diamonds were studied. The irradiation of diamond with high-energy electron beam creates lattice defects which are neutral single vacancy $V^0$. It increased with increasing electron dose density. The B aggregation seems to produce vacancies more easily than the A aggregation, because diamonds with more B aggregation have more platelets, which are sufficient breakable size by electron beam. Greenish blue color of irradiated diamond is changed to darker with increasing electron dose density. GR1 centers with a zero-phonon line at 741 nm and phonon sidebands make transmit visible light at 530 nm and it moves to 500 nm with higher intensity of GR1 centers.
Thirty two different kinds of domestic plastic films for use in measuring high gamma-ray dose have been collected and their dosimetric characteristics investigated with the help of a Co-60 gamma radiation source. Among them a rigid polyvinyl chloride(PVC) film of 0.06mm in thickness which is manufactured by Lucky Chemical Co., Korea, seem to be the most suitable one for this purpose. The relation between optical density at 3100$\AA$ and radiation exposure in this PVC film was linear in the range of 0.6$\times$10$^{6}$ R to 1.3$\times$10$^{7}$ R, and also the film showed a good reproducibility within 9% under the standard experimental condition. The effect of absorbed dose, oxygen content of surrounding atmosphere and irradiation temperature have also been studied for this film. It appeared to have a good property in the dosimetrical point of view.
