Content Comparison on Dietary Fiber and Rutin of Korean Buckwheat according to Growing District and Classification (한국산 메밀의 산지 및 종류에 따른 식이섬유와 루틴의 함량비교)

  • In this study, total dietary fiber contents, acid detergent fiber contents lignin, water binding capacity (WBC), iron binding capacity of ADF and rutin contents from Korean buckwheats were determined. Total dietary fiber (TDF) content was 3.14% in kyungbuk rice buckwheat, 5.65% in kangwon hull buckwheat and 3.35% in kangwon rice buckwheat. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) content was 2.47, 4.46 and 2.94%, respectively and lignin content was 1.14, 1.60 and 1.08% respectively. The water binding capacity of these three sample dietary fiber showed that TDF were in the range of 2.87~3.88 g %H_2O$/g DF and ADF were in the range of 4.62~5.26 g %H_2O$/g DF. The iron binding capacity of ADF at pH 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 were 79.11, 78.01, 46.16% in kyungbuk rice buckwheat, 70.63, 63.83, 53.60% in kangwon hull buckwheat and 77.67, 76.33, 50.25% in kangwon rice buckwheat. The rutin contents of these samples and their hulls were 13.54~16.41 mg/100 g groats and 12.13~14.24 mg/100 g in hulls. The rutin content of kyungbuk rice buckwheat was the highest.

Influence Factor on Magnetization Property of Carbonyl Iron-based Magnetorheological Fluids

  • Magnetization property is a critical factor for magnetorheological fluids (MRFs) to achieve the liquid-solid transition. The main focus of this study is on exploring the influence factors on magnetization properties of MRFs. In this paper, a theoretical analysis is performed to discuss the magnetization characteristics of MRFs firstly. Then, a method for the preparation of carbonyl iron-based MRFs is illustrated and five MRFs samples with various material parameters are prepared. It is succeeded by a series of experiments on testing the hysteresis loop and the magnetization curve of each sample and the influence factors are compared and analyzed. Experimental results indicate that there is basically no hysteresis phenomenon on MRFs which exhibits superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. A surfactant coating on magnetic particles can slightly improve the MRFs magnetization. Additionally, the magnetic susceptibility and the saturation magnetization both increase with the particle concentration, whereas the influence of particle diameter is relatively very small. Moreover, as the temperature increases, the magnetization decreases and the declining rate accelerates gradually.

Backbone NMR chemical shift assignment for the substrate binding domain of Escherichia coli HscA

  • HscA is a Hsp70-type chaperone protein that plays an essential role to mediate the iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster biogenesis mechanism in Escherichia coli. Like other Hsp70 chaperones, HscA is composed of two domains: the nucleotide binding domain (NBD), which can hydrolyze ATP and use its chemical energy to facilitate the Fe-S cluster transfer process, and the substrate binding domain (SBD), which directly interacts with the substrate, IscU, the scaffold protein of an Fe-S cluster. In the present work, we prepared the isolated SBD construct of HscA (HscA(SBD)) and conducted the solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments to have its backbone chemical shift assignment information. Due to low spectral quality of HscA(SBD), we obtained all the NMR data from the sample containing the peptide LPPVKIHC, the HscA-interaction motif of IscU, from which the chemical shift assignment could be done successfully. We expect that this information provides an important basis to execute detailed structural characterization of HscA and appreciate its interaction with IscU.

Comparative Study on Compositions and Functional Properties of Porcine, Chicken and Duck Blood

  • Hematological, chemical and functional characteristics of porcine, chicken and duck blood were evaluated. A porcine blood sample showed the most abundant red blood cell, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume and plasma protein content as well as its freeze-dried blood possessed the highest contents of protein, fat, Cu and Cr with the highest percentage of heme iron (p<0.05). Unlike porcine blood, chicken blood showed a well balance in some essential amino acids, specifically for a higher isoleucine content (p<0.05). Furthermore, it possessed the highest contents of carbohydrate, Zn and non-heme iron (p<0.05). The most rapid response to form a strong gel, especially at $70^{\circ}C$ and $80^{\circ}C$, was found in chicken blood, followed by duck and porcine blood, respectively. The result of emulsion activity index (EAI) and emulsion stability index (ESI) at the low protein concentration indicated that chicken blood had the most superior emulsion properties (p<0.05). Regarding duck blood, it exhibited the highest content of Mg and Mn (p<0.05). Moreover, duck blood had similar foaming properties to porcine blood in which they showed higher values than chicken blood (p<0.05). Specific characteristics of blood were therefore diminished by animal species in which this information could be used as food supplementation or product development based on their potential applications.

The Difference of Lead and Cadmium Concentration of Blood, Urine and Hair between Children with Suboptimal Iron Status and Normal Children (철분부족아동과 정상아동의 혈액, 소변, 머리카락 속의 납, 카드뮴 수준 차이에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to assess the lead and cadmium status of children residing in urban factory area and to see if there is a difference of lead and cadmium status between the group with normal iron status. The mean lead concentration of male hair was 9.55ppm which is significantly higher than 6.61 ppm that of female. The mean lead concentration of male urine sample was 0.04ppm, 10.3ppm and $48.14\mu{g/L}$, which is higher than 0.08ppm, 6.08ppm and $20.69\mu{g/L}$ of normal group, respectively. In a suboptimal group the proportion of children whose urinary lead is higher than normal$(35\mu{g/L)$was 87.3%, whereas 2.5% for a normal group. The mean cadmium concentration of male hair was 2.58ppm, which is higher than 2.48ppm that of a female. The mean cadmium concentration of erythrocyte, hair and urine was 0.25ppm, 2.65ppm and $38.83\mu{g/L}$, which is higher than 0.20ppm, 2.40ppm and $19.78\mu{g/L}$ of the normal group, respectively. The proportion of children whose urinary cadmium level is higher than the low limit of risk of cadmium intoxication$(40\mu{g/L)}$ was 21.4%, whereas 0% for a mormal group. Urinary lead and cadmium level showed significantly negative correlation with the RBC count, hematocrit, hemoglobin and serum ferritin, whereas they had significantly positive correlation with FEP/Hb(p<0.01). There was no correlation between the IQ and the level of lead and cadmium.

Effect of acid whey and freeze-dried cranberries on lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of nitrite-/nitrate-free fermented sausage made from deer meat

  • Objective: This study evaluated the effect of acid whey and freeze-dried cranberries on the physicochemical characteristics, lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of nitrite-free fermented sausage made from deer meat and pork fat. Antioxidant interactions between acid whey and cranberry compounds were also explored. Methods: Four formulations of fermented venison sausage were prepared: F1 (control), F2 (with 5% liquid acid whey), F3 (with 0.06% of freeze-dried cranberries), and F4 (with 5% liquid acid whey and 0.06% of freeze-dried cranberries). Each sample was analyzed for pH, water activity ($a_w$), heme iron content, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value and conjugated dienes at the end of the manufacturing process and at 30 and 90 days of refrigerated storage. Fatty acid composition was measured once at the end of the manufacturing process. Results: At the end of ripening, all samples presented statistically different values for a pH range of 4.47 to pH 4.59. The sum of the unsaturated fatty acids was higher, while the conjugated diene and the TBARS values were lower in sausages with freeze-dried cranberries as compared to the control sausage. The highest content of heme iron (21.52 mg/kg) at day 90 was found in the sausage formulation with the addition of freeze-dried cranberries, which suggests that the addition of cranberries stabilized the porphyrin ring of the heme molecule during storage and thereby reduced the release of iron. The use of liquid acid whey in combination with cranberries appears to not be justified in view of the oxidative stability of the obtained products. Investigation and Assessment of the Deterioration on Aging Large Water Mains (대형 상수관로 노후상태 조사 및 평가에 관한 연구)

  • The current conditions of large water mains are evaluated by deteriorations and the causes of deterioration are investigated through visual assessments in the field, mechanical tests and analysis of chemical compositions in laboratory for each pipe material, unlined cast iron pipes (CIPs), ductile iron pipes (DCIPs) and steel pipes (SPs) Tubercles and scales from internal and external corrosion of unlined cast iron pipes were identified as the causes of functional performance limitations in large water mains. It is investigated that main causes of internal and external corrosion of water pipes are from lots of depositions of organic and inorganic substances on pipe surface, concentrated pitting, and uniform corrosion by local or global exfoliation or detachment of lining and coatings of DCIPs and SPs. Internal and external corrosion depths of CIPs were higher than those of DCIPs and SPs. Consequently, total corrosion rate summed internal and external corrosion rates of CIPs also were shown to be higher than those of DCIPs and SPs. The failure time from hole generation of CIPs by total corrosion rate was predicted to be taken sixteen years, and DCIPs and SPs were twenty-six years and one hundred and fifty three years. And longitudinal deflection of investigated water mains were not happened and mechanical strengths such as tensile strength, elongation, and hardness also were mostly suited to Korea Standards. It was thought that the weakness of tensile strength of one sample(S-11) was, however, due to higher carbon contents(%) in CIPs. Pipe deterioration score of S-46 was 55.2 and was preferentially assessed to be rehabilitated.

The Magnetic Properties of Polycrystalline Yttrium Iron Garnet by Ferromagnetic Resonance (강자성공명 현상을 이용한 YIG의 자기적 특성 연구)

  • Stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric $Y_{3-x}Fe_{5+x}O_{12})$ polycrystalline samples (x=0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, -0.05, -0.10, -0.30) were prepared by solid state reaction method. The magnetic properties of the sample were investigated by FMR (ferromagnetic resonance) technique at microwave frequency 5.11 GHz (G-band) and 23.39 GHz (K-band) respectively. The spectroscopic splitting factor g were estimated to be 2.04~2.35 from the derivative absorption lines. As the samples became yttrium $(Y^{3+})$ excess and iron $(Fe^{3+})$ excess, Magnetizations were decreased. But resonance linewidth were increased. To investigate the anisotropy, the angular dependence of resonance magnetic fields were measured. Angular dependence of effective magnetizations were measured by FMR from 77 K to 300 K at K-band microwave frequency (23.39 GHz) and the saturation magnetizations were measured by VSM. The Bloch coefficients B and C were determined by fitting. $M_{eff}(0)$ was obtained by the extrapolation from 80 K. From this result, the spin wave stiffness constant D $(about\; 162~206 \;eV{\AA}^2)$and average square range of exchange interaction $$$(about \;5.84~12.13\;{\AA}^2)$ were determined.

Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of Sodium-Iron Phosphates NaFe0.9Mn0.1PO4 Cathode Material

  • The sodium-iron phosphate maricite-$NaFe_{0.9}Mn_{0.1}PO_4$ was synthesized using the ball mill method. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the prepared materials were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. Structural refinement of maricite-$NaFe_{0.9}Mn_{0.1}PO_4$ was analyzed using the FullProf program. From the XRD patterns, the crystal structure of maricite-$NaFe_{0.9}Mn_{0.1}PO_4$ was found to be orthorhombic with the space group Pmnb. The lattice parameters of maricite-$NaFe_{0.9}Mn_{0.1}PO_4$ are as follows: $a_0=6.866{\AA}$, $b_0=8.988{\AA}$, $c_0=5.047{\AA}$, and $V=311.544{\AA}^3$. Maricite-$NaFePO_4$ has an edge-sharing structure that consists of $FeO_6$ octahedral. Under an applied field of 100 Oe, the temperature dependences of zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) curves were measured from 4.2 to 295 K. $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra were also recorded at various temperatures ranging from 4.2 to 295 K. We thus confirmed that the $N{\acute{e}}el$ temperature of $NaFe_{0.9}Mn_{0.1}PO_4$ ($T_N=14K$) was lower than that of maricite-$NaFePO_4$ ($T_N=15K$).

Oxychlorination of methane over FeOx/CeO2 catalysts

  • Methane activation through oxychlorination is in the spotlight due to the relatively mild reaction conditions at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range of $450-550^{\circ}C$. Although $CeO_2$ is known to exhibit good activity for methane oxychlorination, significant amounts of by-products such as $CO_2$, CO and carbon deposits are produced during the reaction over $CeO_2$. We investigated the effect of iron in $FeO_x/CeO_2$ catalysts on methane oxychlorination. $FeO_x/CeO_2$ with 3 wt% iron shows the maximum yield at $510^{\circ}C$ with 23% conversion of methane and 65% selectivity of chloromethane. XRD and $H_2$ TPR results indicate that iron-cerium solid solution was formed, resulting in the production of more easily reduced cerium oxide and the suppression of catalysts sintering during the reaction. Furthermore, the selectivity of by-products decreased more significantly over $FeO_x/CeO_2$ than cerium oxide, which can be attributed to the facilitation of HCl oxidation arising from the enhanced reducibility of the former sample.
