  • This study assessed the feasibility of iron oxide nanoparticles impregnated with biochar (INPBC), derived from woody biomass, as a stabilizing agent for the stabilization of farmland soil in the vicinity of an abandoned mine through pot experiments with 28 days of lettuce growth. The lettuce grown in the INPBC amended soils increased by more than 100% and the concentrations of inorganic elements (Cu, Ni, Zn) decreased by more than 40%. As, Cd and Pb were not transferred properly from the soils to the lettuce biomass. The bioavailability of arsenic and heavy metals in the INPBC amended soils were decreased by 26%~50%. It seems that the major mechanisms of stabilization were arsenic adsorption on iron oxides, heavy metal precipitation by soil pH increasing and heavy metal adsorption on organic matter. These results revealed that the lower bioavailability of the inorganic pollutants in the soils stabilized using INPBC induced lower transfer to the lettuce. Thus, INPBC could be used as an amendment material for the stabilization of farmland soils contaminated by arsenic and heavy metals. However, a pre-review of the chemical properties of the amended soil must be performed prior to applying INPBC in farmland soil because the concentration of the nutrients in the soil such as available phosphates and exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K) could be decreased due to adsorption on the surface of the iron oxides and organic matter.

  • Nano-sized iron particles were synthesized by reduction of $Fe^{3+}$ in aqueous solution under two reaction conditions, aerobic and anaerobic, and the reactivity of iron was tested by reaction with trichloroethene (TCE) using a batch system. Results showed that iron produced under anoxic condition for both synthesis and drying steps gave rise to iron with higher reduction reactivity, indicating the presence of oxygen is not favorable for production of nano-sized iron deemed to accomplish reactivity enhancement from particle sized reduction. Nano-sized iron sample obtained from the anoxic synthesis condition was further characterized using various instrumental measurements to identity particle morphology, composition, surface area, and particle size distribution. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image showed that synthesized particles were uniform, spherical particles (< 100 nm), and aggregated into various chain structures. The effects of other synthesis conditions such as solution pH, initial $Fe^{3+}$ concentration, and reductant injection rate on the reactivity of nano-sized iron, along with standardization of the synthesis protocol, are presented in the companion paper.

  • We demonstrate a facile and robust layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method for the fabrication of nonvolatile resistive switching memory (NRSM) devices based on superparamagnetic nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the highly enhanced magnetic and resistive switching memory properties as well as the dense and homogeneous adsorption of nanoparticles, via nucleophilic substitution reaction (NSR) in nonpolar solvent. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MP) of about size 12 nm (or 7 nm) synthesized with oleic acid (OA) in nonpolar solvent could be converted into 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA)-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (BMPA-MP) by stabilizer exchange without change of solvent polarity. In addition, bromo groups of BMPA-MP could be connected with highly branched amine groups of poly (amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) in ethanol by NSR of between bromo and amine groups. Based on these results, nanocomposite multilayers using LbL assembly could be fabricated in nonpolar solvent by NSR of between BMPA-MP and PAMA without any additional phase transfer of MP for conventional LbL assembly. These resulting superparamagnetic multilayers displayed highly improved magnetic and resistive switching memory properties in comparison with those of multilayers based on water-dispersible MP. Furthermore, NRSM devices, which were fabricated by LbL assembly method under atmospheric conditions, exhibited the outstanding performances such as long-term stability, fast switching speed and high ON/OFF ratio comparable to that of conventional inorganic NRSM devices produced by vacuum deposition.

  • Recycling process of iron should be developed for efficient recovery of neodymium(Nd), rare metal, from acid-leaching solution of neodymium magnet. In this study, $FeCl_3$ solution as iron source was used for synthesis of iron nanoparticle with the condition of various factors, etc, reductant, surfactant. $Na_4O_7P_2$ and polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) as surfactants, $NaBH_4$ as reductant, and palladium chloride($PdCl_2$) as a nucleation seed were used. Iron powder was analyzed with instruments of XRD, SEM and PSA for measuring shape and size. Iron nanoparticles were made at the ratio of 1 : 5(Fe (III) : $NaBH_4$) after 30 min of reduction time. Size and shape of iron particles synthesized were round-form and 50 nm ~ 100 nm size. Zeta-potential of iron at the 100 mg/L of $Na_4O_7P_2$ was negative value, which is good for dispersion of metal particle. When $Na_4O_7P_2$(100 mg/L), PVP($FeCl_3$ : PVP = 1 : 4, w/w) and Pd($FeCl_3$ : $PdCl_2$ = 1 : 0.001, w/w) were used, iron nanoparticles which are round-shape, well-dispersed, near 100 nm-sized can be made.

  • Using nanotechnology, magnetic nanoparticles of iron oxide were produced via co-precipitation method and followed modification with organic compounds. In the next step, functionalized monomer was provided via coupling ${\beta}$-cyclodextrine and allylamine onto modified magnetic nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were used to establish the adsorption rate of celecoxib. Magnetic nanoparticles are modified by (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. Nano-adsorbent was characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermo-gravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Laboratory parameters, such as the kinetics of adsorption isotherms, pH, reaction temperature and capacity were optimized. Finally, by using this nano-adsorbent in the optimized condition, extraction of celecoxib from biological samples as urine, drug matrix and blood plasma was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography with sensitivity and high accuracy.

  • Real-time formation of $L1_0$ phase of FePt nanoparticles in the gas phase during ultrasonic-spray pyrolysis is first discussed in the present study. Without any post heat treatment, $L1_0$ phase of FePt nanoparticles appeared at the temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ in the gas phase synthesis. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies revealed that FePt nanoparticles less than 10 nm in size contained small volume of $L1_0$ fct phase. However, in other samples obtained at the temperature below $900^{\circ}C$, iron oxide phase co-existed and no evidence of phase transformation was found. Thus, it is anticipated that the time of flight of particles required for crystallization and phase transformation was extended according to the increase of the collision rate. Finally, magnetic properties represented by coercivity and saturation magnetization and functional groups on the particle surface were discussed based on VSM and FT-IR results.

  • With a small particle size, specific surface area and chemical nature, Pd/Cu-Fe nanocomposites can efficiently remove the organic compounds. In order to understand the applicability for in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater, the degradation of p-nitrophenol by Pd/Cu-Fe nanoparticles was investigated. The degradation results demonstrated that these nanoparticles could effectively degrade p-nitrophenol and near 90% of degradation efficiency was achieved by Pd/Cu-Fe nanocomposites for 120 min treatment. The efficiency of degradation increased significantly when the Pd content increased from 0.05 wt.% and 0.10 wt.% to 0.20 wt.%. Meanwhile, the removal percentage of p-nitrophenol increased from 75.4% and 81.7% to 89.2% within 120 min. Studies on the kinetics of p-nitrophenol that reacts with Pd/Cu-Fe nanocomposites implied that their behaviors followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Furthermore, the batch experiment data suggested that some factors, including Pd/Cu-Fe availability, temperature, pH, different ions (SO42-, PO43-, NO3-) and humic acid content in water, also have significant impacts on p-nitrophenol degradation efficiency. The recyclability of the material was evaluated. The results showed that the Pd/Cu-Fe nanoparticles have good recycle performance, and after three cycles, the removal rate of p-nitrophenol is still more than 83%.

  • Purpose : To determine the optimal combination of commercially available superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles with transfection agents (TA). Materials and Methods: Protamine sulfate (Pro) and poly-L-lysin (PLL) were incubated with ferumoxide and ferucarbotran in human mesenchymal stem cells at various concentrations, and cellular viability were evaluated. Cellular iron uptake was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated. Cell visibility was assessed via MR imaging and the T2-relaxation time was calculated. Results: The cellular viabilities with ferucarbotran were more significantly decreased than those with ferumoxide (p < 0.05). Iron uptake with ferumoxide was significantly higher than that for those with with ferucarbotran. The T2-relaxation time was observed to be shorter with ferumoxide in comparison to those with ferucarbotran (p < 0.05). Ferumoxide at a concentration of 25 ${\mu}g$/ml in combination with either Pro or PLL at a concentration of 3.0 ${\mu}g$/ml did not adversely impact cell viability, maximized iron uptake, and exhibited a lower T2-relaxation time in comparison to other combinations. Conclusion: Stem cells with ferumoxide exhibited a higher cellular viability and iron uptake in comparison to ferucarbotran-treated stem cells. A 25 ${\mu}g$/ml of ferumoxide with a 3.0 ${\mu}g$/ml of TA is sufficient to label mesenchymal stem cells.

  • Background: To evaluate the changes in the radiation dose and temperature distribution on irradiated egg albumin and nanoparticle ($Fe_3O_4$) powder mixed egg albumin. Methods: A new type of phantom was designed by fabricating a $30{\times}30{\times}30cm$ acryl square inside a $3{\times}3{\times}3cm$ small square and dividing it into two parts. In the control group, only egg albumin was irradiated, and in the test group, 25 nm 20 mg/cc, 25 nm 40 mg/cc, and 1 um 40mg/cc nanoparticles with egg albumin were irradiated. The radiation isodose distributions and temperature changes were then observed. Results: No significant changes were observed in the radiation dose and temperature distribution. Conclusion: The nanoparticles were considered not to have had any effect on the radiation dose and temperature distribution under the experimental conditions. Further studies can be conducted based on the changes in the mixture material.
