Formation of surface mediated iron colloids during U(VI) and nZVI interaction

  • We investigated that removal of aqueous U(VI) by nano-sized Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) and Fe(II) bearing minerals (controls) in this study. Iron particles showed different U(VI) removal efficiencies (Mackinawite: 99%, green rust: 95%, nZVI: 91%, magnetite: 87%, pyrite: 59%) due to their different PZC (Point of Zero Charge) values and surface areas. In addition, noticeable amount of surface Fe(II) (181 ${\mu}M$) was released from nZVI suspension in 6 h and it increased to 384 ${\mu}M$ in the presence of U(VI) due to ion-exchange of U(VI) with Fe(II) on nZVI surface. Analysis of Laser-Induced Breakdown Detection (LIBD) showed that breakdown probabilities in both filtrates by 20 and 200 nm sizes was almost 24% in nZVI suspension with U(VI), while 1% of the probabilities were observed in nZVI suspension without U(VI). It indicated that Fe(II) colloids in the range under 20 nm were generated during the interaction of U(VI) and nZVI. Our results suggest that Fe(II) colloids generated via ion-exchange process should be carefully concerned during long-term remediation site contaminated by U(VI) because U could be transported to remote area through the adsorption on Fe(II) colloids.

Superconducting magnetic separation of ground steel slag powder for recovery of resources

  • Steel slag has been considered as an industrial waste. A huge amount of slag is produced as a byproduct and the steel slag usually has been dumped in a landfill site. However the steel slag contains valuable resources such as iron, copper, manganese, and magnesium. Superconducting magnetic separation has been applied on recovery of the valuable resources from the steel slag and this process also has intended to reduce the waste to be dumped. Cryo-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting magnet with 100 mm bore and 600 mm of height was used as the magnetic separator. The separating efficiency was evaluated in the function of magnetic field. A steel slag was ground and analyzed for the composition. Iron containing minerals were successfully concentrated from less iron containing portion. The separation efficiency was highly dependent on the particle size giving higher separating efficiency with finer particle. The magnetic field also effects on the separation ratio. Current study showed that an appropriate grinding of slag and magnetic separation lead to the recovery of metal resources from steel slag waste rather than dumping all of the volume.

식용 버섯류의 무기물 함량 (Studies on the Mineral Content of Edible Mushrooms)

  • To investigate on the trace element content of twelve edible mushrooms and Aloe arborescens, i. e., Lentinus edodes, Ganoderma lucidum (culturing in wood and soil), Tricholoma matsutake, Agaricus bisporus, Cyrophora esculenta, Auricularia auricula-Jude (produced in Korea and China), Sarcodon asparatus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Coriolus versicolor, Smilax rotundifolia and Aloe arborescerts were analyzed by Atomic absorption spectrometer. The obtained results were summerized as follows: 1. Potassium, sodium, magnesium and iron content for the most part samples were in large quantities, especially phosphorus content of those was highest ammount for the all samples. 2. Sodium content was much ammount in the Lentinus edodes (39mg) and Ganoderma lucidurn (20 mg), Culturing in wood and soil, while potassium was very high ammount in the Aloe arborescens and other samples. Mush ammount of magnesium as compared with others was Lentinus edodes (144mg), Ganoderma lucidurn (128mg), Aloe arborescerts (50mg) and pleurotus ostreatus (60mg). Phosphorus content of Ganoderma lucidurn, Lentinus edodes, Gyrophora esculenta, Auricularia polytricha and Agaricus bisporus was much ammount while iron content of all samples equality higher ammount. Sodium content of Aloe arborescens was not analyzed out for almost all, its potassium (82mg), magnesium (50mg) and iron (18rng) content comparatively higher quentity than others minerals and phosphorus volume (4.9mg) as compared with others, was conspicuously lower detect. 4. Cadimium and lead content of harmful metal element were detected on trace quentity for the most part samples 5. Organic acids of samples i.e., Legtinus edodes, Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus ostreatus and Ganoderma lucidum were Citrate, Malate, Fumalate, Succinate, Oxalate, Acetate, Lactate, and Tartarate and Citrate, Malate and Fumarate contents were higher amount remarkbly than other organic acids. Tartarate content was trace amount.

경남지구(慶南地區)의 스카른형(型) 광상(鑛床)의 성인(成因)과 스카른광물(鑛物)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (Studies on the Skarn-type Ore Deposits and Skarn Minerals in Gyeongnam Province)

  • Many skarn type iron ore deposits are distributed in Kimhae-Mulgeum area of Gyeongnam Province. Integrated field, mineralogic, geochemical and fluid inclusion studies were undertaken to illustrate the character and origin of the ores in this area. The iron ore deposits in this area are NS or NNE trending fracture filling magnetite veins which are developed in andesitic rocks near the contact with late Cretaceous micrographic granite bodies. Symmetrically zoned skarns are commonly developed in the magnetite veins of this area. Zoning of skarn from center to margin of the vein are as follows; garnet quartz skarn-epidote skarn-epidote orthoclase skarn-altered andesitic rocks. Major ore mineral is magnetite and small amount of hematite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are associated. Vein paragenesis reveals four depositional stages; 1) skarn stage, 2) iron sulfide and oxide stage, 3) skarn stage, 4) sulfide stage Minute halite-bearing polyphase inclusions and liquid inclusions are contained in quartz. Filling temperatures range from $257^{\circ}$ to $370^{\circ}C$.

함백지향내의 스카른광상에서 산출되는 석류석과 단사휘석의 광물학과 철화학 (Mineralogy and Iron Chemistry of Garnets and Clinopyroxenes in the Skarn Deposits, the Hambaek Geosyncline Belt, Korea)

  • In the southern limb of the Hambaek geosyncline belt, large-scaled skarn deposits are developed in the Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks of the Chosun Supergroup. They are the Sangdong tungsten deposit, Geodo iron-copper deposit, Yeonhwa I and II lead-zinc deposits, and Ulchin zinc-lead deposit, all of which are associated with various skarn minerals. Though different occurrences and paragenesis are found in different deposits, most skarn deposits always have skarns of garnet (andradite-grossular series) and clinopyroxene(heden-bergite-diopside series). Andradite and hedenbergite are Fe-dominant members, but show different oxidation states, that is, Fe3+ for andradite and Fe2+ for hedenbergite. According to iron chemistry and log([Fe/Al]gd/[Fe/Mg]cpx) derived from equilibrium reactions, the diopside-andradite and hedenbergite-grossular pairs suggest the oxidized state (dian type) and reduced state (hegro type), respectively. Among skarn deposits developed in the Hambaek geosynline, it can be classified that the Geodo and Yeonhwa I skarns are of dian type, while the Sangdong, Yeonhwa II, and Ulchin deposits are of hegro type. This classification is not applicable to all kinds of skarn deposits, but may be applicable to such deposits as are more controlled by oxygen fugacity than composition of skarn fluid.

효모에서 생산한 재조합 human L-ferritin의 생화학적 특성 및 나노입자의 철산화물 합성 (Recombinant Human L-ferritin from Saccharomyces cerevisiae: Molecular Characterization and Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles)

  • In the synthesis of nanoparticles, much attention has been paid to regulating the particle size. There has been a possible evident that using the central cavity (core) of the protein ferritin has a greatly significant influence on it because the core can generate the nanometer-sized mineral particles of variable metal ions. In this report, recombinant human L-ferritins produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae were purified and their molecular properties were characterized. The cDNA for human ferritin L chain was also expressed in another host such as Escherichia coli, and the properties of recombinant L-ferritins were compared. From isoelectric focusing experiment, the L-ferritin from the recombinant yeast showed no indication of N-glycosylation. Some post-translational modifications other than N-glycosylation were speculated in the L-ferritins from yeast. A difference was made in the L-ferritins in their iron uptake rates and the initial rate of the L-ferritin from yeast was slightly increased. The reconstitution yield and size distribution of the core minerals were analyzed in the L-ferritins by transmission electron microscopy. The L-ferritin from yeast with higher reconstitution yield (54.5%) showed slightly larger sizes (mean 6.92 nm) with narrower size distribution than the L-ferritin from E. coli. It is, in conclusion, speculated that L-ferritin from yeast is relatively superior to the other, in view of the size of nanoparticle and its relative homogeneity.

생우유 과량섭취와 관련된 영유아의 혈청 무기질과 미량원소 함량 및 지질조성 (Serum Concentration of Major Minerals, Trace Elements, Lipids and Fatty Acids Composition Related to Whole Cow's Milk Feeding in Infancy & Young Childhood)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of large amounts of whole cow's milk intake on serum levels of minerals and lipids. Subjects were normal infants who were brought to the pediatric hospital for vaccination at the age of 7-26 months after birth, living in Eumsung-Choongbuk area. The serum concentrations of the imnerals(calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper), lipids and fatty acids composition were analyzed in 38 infants which consumed large amount of whole cow's milk(over 700ml/day). The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The mean levels of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the serum of the total subjects were 7.56$\pm$0.51mg/dl, 11.12$\pm$0.72mg/dl and 1.62$\pm$0.13mg/dl respectively. The serum concentrations of iron, zinc and copper in total subjects averaged 72.42$\pm$1.62$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 76.29$\pm$3. 62$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl and 86.44$\pm$2.98$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl respectively. 2) The mean serum concentrations of triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL and LDL in the total number of subjects were 96.84$\pm$9.22mg/dl, 133.45$\pm$6.30mg/dl, 32.79$\pm$1.77mg/dl and 81.29$\pm$4.81mg/dl respectively. 3) The average percentages of SFA, MUFA and PUFA inth total serum fatty acids were 38.98$\pm$2.42$\%$, 25.82$\pm$0.98$\%$ and 37.30$\pm$1.09$\%$ respectively and the mean$w6/w3$fatty acids ratio was 13.48. In general, the levels of serum minerals and $\omega$3 fatty acid composition in the subjects of this study, who were whole cow's milk fed infants were lower than those reported in breast milk or formula fed infants. Therefore, the intake of large amount of whole cow's milk in the weani ng period should be controlled and adequate for the infant's nutritional status. (Korean J Community 2(4) : 477-485, 1997)

단층비지대의 성장: 경주시 양북면 부근의 사례 (The Widening of Fault Gouge Zone: An Example from Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju city, Korea)

  • 단층의 내부 구조가 잘 구분되는 하나의 단층핵이 경주시 양북면 용당리 부근 작은 계곡에 인접하여 노출되어 있다. 단층핵의 중앙에는 약 25 cm두께의 단층비지대가 놓여 있으며 색깔에 의해 청회색 비지대와 녹황색 비지대로 구분된다. 현미경하에서 비지들은 옛 비지편, 석영, 장석, 철광물 등의 반상쇄편으로 구성되며 기질은 점토광물이 풍부하고 점토광물은 선택정렬하며 P엽리를 잘 발달시킨다. 청회색 비지와 녹황색 비지의 차이점은 녹황색 비지가 청회색 비지에 비해 점토광물이 훨씬 풍부하고, 반상쇄편의 수와 크기가 적으며, 철광물 또한 매우 풍부하고 철광물의 종류는 청회색 비지대에서 대부분 황철석인데 반해 주로 적철석으로 이루어진다. 이 적철석은 청회색 비지 형성 단층작용 시에 유입된 열수가 청회색비지대에 황철석을 침전시킬 동안 녹황색 비지대에는 기존의 황철석을 변질시켜 적철석을 형성한 것으로 생각된다. 단층핵 내 청회색 비지대와 녹황색 비지대는 점진적인 단층대 발달 단계를 거쳐 형성된 것으로 생각된다. 첫째 단계에서는 이른 단층작용이 시작되고 이에 수반되어 손상대가 생성되었다. 두 번째 단계는 손상대에서 반복적인 단열작용으로 각력대가 형성되었다. 세 번째 단계에서는 입자 마모와 연마작용이 활발하게 일어나며 녹황색 비지대가 발달하였다. 네 번째 단계에서 변형작용은 단층핵의 중심에서 옛 비지대(녹황색 비지대)가 변형경화로 비활동적으로 남을 때 단층핵의 연변을 향하여 새로운 비지대인 청회색 비지대가 생성되어 녹황색 비지대에 인접하여 부가되었으며 이로 인해 단층핵 내 비지대는 더 큰 폭으로 성장하였다. 비지대 내에서 청회색 비지대 생성 후 변형작용은 반상쇄편의 내부 파쇄작용과 혼합면열구조의 발달로 비지대 내 큰 변형이 수용되었다.

한국 젊은 여성의 단백질 및 칼슘 섭취 수준이 체내 철분 및 아연 평형에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dietary Protein and Calcium Levels on Iron and Zine Balance in Young Korean Women)

  • 단백질 및 칼슘 수준이 체내 철분 및 아연의 평형에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 건강한 젊은 여성 8명을 대상으로 20일간의 대사실험을 실시하였다. 실험대상자는 2일간의 적응 기간 후 저단백저칼슘식이 (44g 단백질, 422mg 칼슘), 고단백저칼슘식이 (85g 단백질, 365mg 칼슘), 고단백고칼슘식이 (84g 단백질, 727mg 칼슘)의 6일씩 각 실험식이를 섭취하였다. 각 식이 기간 후반 3일간의 대변 및 뇨를 수집하고 각 식이 기간이 끝난 후 공복시에 채혈하였다. 각 식이의 열량, 단백질, 칼슘, 철분 및 아연을 분석하고 대변과 뇨의 철분 및 아연을 분석하였으며 혈청중의 철분 및 아연 농도를 측정하여 비교하였다. 식이의 단백질 수준이 높아졌을 때 체내 철분과 아연의 흡수 및 평형이 유의적으로 증가되었으며(P<0.01) 식이의 칼슘 수준이 높아졌을 때 철분(p<0.01) 및 아연(p<0.05)의 흡수 및 평형은 감소되었다. 혈청의 철분이나 아연 농도는 저단백질식이보다 고단백질식이일 때 증가되는 경향이 있었다. 혈청의 철분 농도는 철분 평형보다는 섭취된 철분의 함량과 높은 양의 상관관계(r=0.99)를 나타냈다. 혈청과 두발의 아연 농도 간에는 상관관계를 볼 수 없었다. 본 연구 결과 식이중의 단백질 및 칼슘 섭취수준은 체내 철분 및 아연의 평형에 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 우리 나라 영양권장량을 책정함에 있어서 이러한 영양소들의 대사를 재검토해야 하며 또한 최근 칼슘과 함께 철분을 강화시키는 몇몇의 시판 유제품이나 음료의 실제 유용성에 대한 평가도 필요하다고 사료된다.

연천 함티타늄 자철광상의 성인 (Ore Genesis of the Yonchon Titaniferous Iron Ore Deposits, South Korea)

  • Titanomagnetite ore bodies in the Yonchon iron mine are closely associated with alkali gabbroic rocks of middle Proterozoic age which intruded Precambrian metasedimentary rocks. The orebodies can be divided into massive ores in gabbroic rock, skarn ores in calcareous xenoliths and banded ores in gneissic gabbro. Gabbroic rocks from the Yonchon iron mine have unusually high content of $TiO_2$ with an average values of 3.46 wt%. Iron ores are ilmenite (42.25~51.56 wt% in $TiO_2$) and titanomagnetite (1.29~6.57 wt% in $TiO_2$) and the former is dominant Small amount of magnetite, hematite, sphene and sulfide minerals are included in the ores. Grandite garnet, titanoaugite and tschermakite are in iron skarn ores. Hornblendes from ores and gabbroic rocks have a relatively homogeneous isotopic composition with ${\delta}D$ between -110.0 and -133.9‰, and ${\delta}^{18}O$ of +4.5 to +6.5‰, and calculated to have formed in fluids with ${\delta}O_{H_2O}$ of + 6.7 to +8.7‰. and ${\delta}_{H_2O}$ of -87.9 to -111.8‰, which has a similar isotopic value of primary magmatic water. Based on intrusive age, occurrence, mineral chemistry and isotopic compositions of magnetite ores and gabroic rocks, it will be concluded that the gabbroic rocks are responsible for the titanomagnetite mineralization. The titaniferous magnetite melt was immiscibly separated from the high titaniferous gabbroic melts of Proterozoic age.
