  • The failures of tailing dams have caused irreparable damage to human lives, assets and environment and this has ultimately resulted in great economic, social and environmental challenges worldwide. Due to this, investigation into mechanical behaviour of tailings has received some attention. However, the knowledge and understanding of mechanics of behaviour in iron tailings is still limited. This study investigates the mechanics of iron tailings from Nigeria considering grading, effects of fabric resulting from different sample preparations and the possibility of non-convergent behaviour. This was achieved by conducting series of one-dimensional compression tests in conjunction with index, microstructural, chemical and mineralogical tests. The materials are predominantly poorly graded, non-clayey and non-plastic. The tailings are characterised by angular particles with no obvious particle aggregations and dominated by silicon, iron, aluminium, haematite and quartz. The compression paths do not converge and unique normal compression lines are not found and this is an important feature of the transitional mode of behaviour. The behaviour of these iron tailings therefore depends on initial specific volume. The preparation methods also have effect on the compression paths of the samples. The gradings of the samples have an influence on the degree of transitional behaviour but the preparation methods do affect the degree of convergence. The transitional mode of behaviour in these iron tailings investigated is very strong.

  • Degradation of the herbicide butachlor was investigated using laboratory-synthesized zerovalent iron ($Fe^0$). The synthesized zerovalent iron was determined to be nanoscale powder by scanning electron microscopic analysis. To investigate degradation of butachlor using the synthesized nanoscale zerovalent iron, time-course batch experiments were conducted by treating the solution of butachlor formulation with the iron. More than 90% degradation of butachlor was observed by iron treatment within 24 h. The synthesized nanoscale zerovalent iron showed an increase in particle aggregation in the batch tests. Green rust formation and a pH drop in solutions were observed, suggesting that the oxidation of the iron occurred. When the iron was extracted with dichloromethane, a negligible concentration was found in the extract, suggesting that butachlor did not bind to the iron particles. GC/MS analysis detected the dechlorinated product as a major degradation product of butachlor in the solutions. The data indicate that laboratory-synthesized zerovalent iron functioned as a reductant to remove electron-withdrawing chlorine, giving the dechlorinated product.

  • We have been developing a magnetic separation device that can be used in low magnetic fields for paramagnetic materials. Magnetic separation of paramagnetic particles with a small particle size is desired for volume reduction of contaminated soil in Fukushima or separation of iron scale from water supply system in power plants. However, the implementation of the system has been difficult due to the needed magnetic fields is high for paramagnetic materials. This is because there was a problem in installing such a magnet in the site. Therefore, we have developed a magnetic separation system that combines a selection tube and magnetic separation that can separate small sized paramagnetic particles in a low magnetic field. The selection tube is a technique for classifying the suspended particles by utilizing the phenomenon that the suspended particles come to rest when the gravity acting on the particles and the drag force are balanced when the suspension is flowed upward. In the balanced condition, they can be captured with even small magnetic forces. In this study, we calculated the particle size of paramagnetic particles trapped in a selection tube in a high gradient magnetic field. As a result, the combination of the selection tube and HGMS (High Gradient Magnetic Separation-system) can separate small sized paramagnetic particles under low magnetic field with high efficiency, and this paper shows its potential application.

  • The principal objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) crosslinking in Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) in immobilization of Fe and bimetallic Fe/Cu and Cu/Fe zero valent particles on the membrane and its efficiency on removal of nitrate in wastewater. PVDF/PEG polymer solution of three weight compositions was prepared to manipulate the viscosity of the polymer. PEG crosslinking was indirectly controlled by the viscosity of the polymer solution. In this study, PEG was used as a modifier of PVDF membrane as well as a cross-linker for the immobilization of the zero valent particles. The result demonstrates improvement in immobilization of metallic particles with the increase in crosslinking of PEG. Nitrate removal efficiency increases too.

  • Nano-sized Yttrium iron garnet (YIG;$Y_3Fe_5O_{12}$) particles have been synthesized by using coprecipitation and a heat treatment process. The YIG particles were made using a nitrate or a chloride salt solution. The pH concentration of the solution was fixed at 12. Spherical shaped YIG particles were made with a size of about 20 nm. The magnetization value of the particles was smaller than the bulk value but their coercive field showed a high value.

  • Ceramic particles as polishing abrasives are often used in a magnetic abrasive polishing process because they have strong wear resistance. Non-ferromagnetic ceramic abrasives should be mixed with ferromagnetic iron particles for controlling the mixture within a magnetic brush during the polishing process. This study describes the application of the ceramic particles for the magnetic abrasive polishing. The distribution of the magnetic abrasives attached on a tool varies with magnetic flux density and tool rotational speed. From the correlation between abrasive adhesion ratio in the tool and surface roughness produced on a workpiece, practical polishing conditions can be determined. A step-over for polishing a large sized workpiece is able to be selected by a S curve, and an ultrasonic vibration assisted MAP produces a better surface roughness and increases a polishing efficiency.

  • The equilibrium and kinetic adsorption of arsenic on six different adsorbents were investigated with one synthetic and four natural types (two surface and two ground) of water. The adsorbents tested included magnetic ion exchange resins (MIEX), hydrous ion oxide particles (HIOPs), granular ferric hydroxide (GFH), activated alumina (AA), sulfur modified iron (SMI), and iron oxide-coated microsand (IOC-M), which have different physicochemical properties (shape, charge, surface area, size, and metal content). The results showed that adsorption equilibriums were achieved within a contact period of 20 min. The optimal doses of adsorbents determined for a given equilibrium concentration of $C_{eq}=10\;{\mu}g/L$ were 500 mg/L for AA and GFH, 520-1,300 mg/L for MIEX, 1,200 mg/L for HIOPs, 2,500 mg/L for SMI, and 7,500 mg/L for IOC-M at a contact time of 60 min. At these optimal doses, the rate constants of the adsorbents were 3.9, 2.6, 2.5, 1.9, 1.8, and 1.6 1/hr for HIOPs, AA, GFH, MIEX, SMI, and IOC-M, respectively. The presence of silicate significantly reduced the arsenic removal efficiency of HIOPs, AA, and GFH, presumably due to the decrease in chemical binding affinity of arsenic in the presence of silicate. Additional experiments with natural types of water showed that, with the exception of IOC-M, the adsorbents had lower adsorption capacities in ground water than with surface and deionized water, in which the adsorption capacities decreased by approximately 60-95%.
