A New Selective Membrane Electrode for Oxalate Based on N,N'-Bis(salicylidene)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine Ni(II)

  • A new solvent polymeric membrane electrode, based on N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diamine Ni(II) as the ionophore, was designed. The oxalate-selective electrode has the dynamic range between 1.0 10-6 M and 1.0 10-1 M with a Nernstian slope of -28.7 1.0 mV per decade. The detection limit was 6.3 10-7 M. The proposed electrode revealed good selectivities for oxalate over a variety of other anions and could be used in a pH range of 2.0-7.8. The electrode can be used for at least two months without any considerable divergence in potential. The designed electrode was applied as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric determination of oxalate in real samples.

  • The electrode potential characteristics of a YSZ based membrane metal oxide electrode have been studied in molten LiCL at $700^{\circ}C$ by the potentiometric method. The electrode exhibited a good potential response to log[$O^2$] and data reproducibility. The calibration plot (potential vs. log[$O^2$] was found to be linear, obeying the Nernst equation. The electrode potential showed a good reversibility corresponding to increase/decrease of the oxide ion present in the molten LiCl. The physical and chemical durability appeared to be sound after several repeated uses, resulting in reproducible results. However, "the proposed electrode" failed when metallic Li was present in the melt.

  • A method for the determination of acidic drug, mefenamic acid and ibuprofen with ion-selective electrode(ISE) using Fe(II)-di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime complex as a counter ion were developed. Benzyl-2-nitrophenyl ether(BNPE) plasticized membrane was more selective and sensitive than the other tested membranes. The acidic drug selective electrode exhibits a linear response for 10$^{-2}$ M 510$^{-5}$ M of acidic drugs, mefenamic acid and ibuprofen with a slope of -55.9 and -56.3 mV/dec. in borate buffer solution (pH 8.9). Potentiometric selectivity measurements revealed negligible interferences from aromatic and aliphatic carboxylic acid salts. The electrodes were found to be useful for the direct determination of mefenamic acid and ibuprofen in pharmaceutical preparations.

Novel Triiodide PVC-Based Membrane Sensor Based on a Charge Transfer Complex of Iodine and Bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)butane-2,3-dihydrazone

  • In this study a novel triiodide ion-selective electrode based on a charge transfer complex of iodine and Bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)butane-2,3-dihydrazone (ICT), as a membrane carrier was prepared. The electrode has a linear dynamic range between 1.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ and 5.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-7}$ M, with a Nernstian slope of 58. 99 ${\pm}$ 0.3 mV $decade^{-1}$ and detection limit of 3.0 ${\times}$ $10 ^{-7}$ M. The potentiometric response of the proposed sensor is independent of the pH of the solution in the pH range of 3.0-10.0. The electrode possesses the advantages of short conditioning time, fast response time, and especially, very good selectivity over a large number of common organic and inorganic anions. The electrode can be used for at least 6 months without any considerable divergences in the potentials. It was used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titration of triiodide ion with thiosulfate.

Lead-Selective Poly(vinyl chloride) Membrane Electrode Based on 1-Phenyl-2-(2-quinolyl)-1,2-dioxo-2-(4-bromo) phenylhydrazone

  • A PVC membrane electrode for lead ion based on 1-phenyl-2-(2-quinolyl)-1,2-dioxo-2-(4-bromo) phenylhydrazone (PQDBP) as ionophore was demonstrated. The optimum composition of the membrane was 30 wt% poly(vinyl chloride), 60 wt% dibutyl phthalate as a plasticizer, 4 wt% ionophore and 6 wt% sodium tetraphenylborate as additive. The electrode exhibits a Nernstian response (28.7 mV decade$^{-1}$) for Pb$^{2+}$ over a wide concentration range (1.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-1}$ to 1 ${\times}$ 10$^{-6}$ M) with a detection limit of 6.0 ${\times}$ 10$^{-7}$ M. This sensor has a short response time and can be used for at least 2 months without any divergence in potentials. The proposed electrode could be used in a pH range of 3.0-6.0 and revealed good selectivities for Pb$^{+2}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions. It was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of lead ion with potassium chromate and for the direct determination of lead in mine.

이온선택전극법에 의한 소변 중 불소 이온 분석법 검증 (Validation of analysis of urinary fluoride by ion selective electrode method)

  • 불산 노출 평가를 위한 생체시료 중 불소 이온 분석을 위해서 초산완충용액을 사용한 이온선택전극(ISE: ion selective electrode) 분석법을 이용한 불소 이온 분석 방법을 제시하였다. MES-CyDTA 완충용액과 1회용 플라스틱 시험관을 사용함으로써 기존의 분석 방법에 비해 1/10의 시료를 사용하여 더 짧은 시간에 정확하고 정밀한 소변 중 불소 이온 분석이 가능하였다. 1.8-7.8 mg/L의 기지 시료에 대해 분석 방법의 정확도는 95-97.5%, 정밀도는 1.9-7.9%, 정량 한계는 0.1 mg/L였다. 이 방법을 불화수소 노출군 15명과 비노출군 12명의 소변 중 불소 이온 분석에 적용한 결과는 각각 $0.98{\pm}0.38mg/g$ creatinine, $0.59{\pm}0.30mg/g$ creatinine이었다.

고 선택성 수은(II) 이온 막 센서 (A Highly Selective Mercury(II) Ion-Selective Membrane Sensor)

  • 수은(II) 이온 센서로 이온투과 담체로서 bis(benzoylacetone) propylenediimine (H2(BA)2PD)을 근간으로 하는 새로운 이온 선택 PVC 막 전극이 개발하였다. 이 전극은 좋은 감응 특성을 보였고, 29.8±0.75 mV/10의 Nernstian 기울기로 부터 1.0×10-6-1.0×10-1 M 수은(II) 이온 농도 범위에서 선형 Emf vs. log[Hg2+]를 보였다. pH 2.5-11.5에서 검출한계는 2.2×10-7 M Hg(II)를 보였다. 다수의 전위 간섭이온에의 수은(II)이온 대한 선택 농도에 대해 역시 연구되었다. 이 센서는 다른 전하와 함께 많은 수의 양이온에 있어 수은(II)이온에 대해 고선택성을 보였다. 이 센 서는 60초 안에 빠는 감응을 보이며 화학적으로 불활성인 것을 알아 내었고 3개월 동안 좋은 재현성을 보였다(S = 0.27 mV). 이 전극은 실제 시료에서 수은(II)이온 의 분석에 대해 서도 만족할 만한 결과를 얻었다.

An Automated Water Nitrate Monitoring System based on Ion-Selective Electrodes

  • Purpose: In-situ water quality monitoring based on ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is a promising technique because ISEs can be used directly in the medium to be tested, have a compact size, and are inexpensive. However, signal drift can be a major concern with on-line management systems because continuous immersion of the ISEs in water causes electrode degradation, affecting the stability, repeatability, and selectivity over time. In this study, a computer-based nitrate monitoring system including automatic electrode rinsing and calibration was developed to measure the nitrate concentration in water samples in real-time. Methods: The capabilities of two different types of poly(vinyl chloride) membrane-based ISEs, an electrode with a liquid filling and a carbon paste-based solid state electrode, were used in the monitoring system and evaluated on their sensitivities, selectivities, and durabilities. A feasibility test for the continuous detection of nitrate ions in water using the developed system was conducted using water samples obtained from various water sources. Results: Both prepared ISEs were capable of detecting low concentrations of nitrate in solution, i.e., 0.7 mg/L $NO_3-N$. Furthermore, the electrodes have the same order of selectivity for nitrate: $NO_3{^-}{\gg}HCO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$, and maintain their sensitivity by > 40 mV/decade over a period of 90 days. Conclusions: The use of an automated ISE-based nitrate measurement system that includes automatic electrode rinsing and two-point normalization proved to be feasible in measuring $NO_3-N$ in water samples obtained from different water sources. A one-to-one relationship between the levels of $NO_3-N$ measured with the ISEs and standard analytical instruments was obtained.

A New Fe (III)-Selective Membrane Electrode Based on Fe (II) Phthalocyanine

  • A new miniaturized all solid-state contact Fe (III)-selective PVC membrane electrode based on Fe (II) phthalocyanine as a neutral carrier was described. The effects of the membrane composition and foreign ions on the electrode performance was investigated. The best performance was obtained with a membrane containing 32% poly (vinyl chloride), 64% dioctylsebacate, 3% Fe (II) phthalocyanine, and 1% potassium tetrakis (p-chlorophenyl) borate. The electrode showed near Nernstian response of $26.04{\pm}0.95mV/decade$ over the wide linear concentration range $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-1}M$, and a very low limit of detection $1.8{\pm}0.5{\times}10^{-7}M$. The potentiometric response of the developed electrode was independent at pH 3.5-5.7. The lifetime of the electrode was approximately 3 months and the response time was very short (< 7 s). It exhibited excellent selectivity towards Fe (III) over various cations. The miniaturized all solid-state contact Fe (III)-selective membrane electrode was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ Fe (III) ions with a $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$ EDTA and the direct determination of Fe (III) ions in real water samples.

Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone)을 코팅한 이온선택성 복합탄소전극의 제조 및 전기화학적 특성 분석 (Fabrication and Electrochemical Characterization of Ion-selective Composite Carbon Electrode Coated with Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone))

  • 반응시간을 변화시키면서 poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)을 황산과 반응시켜 술폰화도가 다른 sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK)를 합성하였다. 제조한 SPEEK를 탄소전극 표면에 코팅하여 이온선택성 복합탄소전극(ion-selective composite carbon electrode, ISCCE)을 제조하였다. 임피던스 분석을 통해 제조한 ISCCE의 비정전용량과 전기저항을 측정하였다. 술폰화 반응 시간에 따라 SPEEK의 이온교환용량은 1.60~2.57 meq/g으로 측정되었다. 그러나 이온교환용량이 2.5 meq/g 이상에서는 SPEEK가 일부 물에 용해되어 ISCCE 제조에 부적합하였다. ISCCE에 대한 정전용량을 측정한 결과 코팅된 SPEEK의 이온교환용량이 증가함에 따라 정전용량도 증가하였으며 코팅하지 않은 탄소전극에 비해 최대 20%까지 향상되었다. 또한 코팅층의 전기저항은 SPEEK의 이온교환용량이 증가함에 따라 크게 감소하였다. 따라서 SPEEK가 코팅된 ISCCE를 이용하여 기존 축전식 탈염(capacitive deionization, CDI) 공정의 탈염효율을 크게 향상시킬 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
