Liquid Crystal Alignment Effects using a Diamond-like Carbon Thin Film (Diamond-like Carbon 박막을 이용한 액정 배향 효과)

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) aligning capabilities using the new alignment material of a diamond like carbon (DLC) thin film. A high pretilt angle of about $3.5^{\circ}$ by ion beam(IB) exposure on the DLC thin film surface was measured. A good LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the DLC thin film surface was observed at annealing temperature of $200^{\circ}C$, and the alignment defect of the NLC was observed above annealing temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the high NLC pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the DLC thin film surface can be achieved.

  • The response surface modeling of the pretilt angle control using ion-beam (IB) alignment on nitrogen doped diamond-like carbon (NDLC) thin film layer is investigated. This modeling is used to analyze the variation of the pretilt angle under various process conditions. IB exposure angle and IB exposure time are considered as input factors. The analysis of variance technique is settled to analyze the statistical significance, and effect plots are also investigated to examine the relationships between the process parameters and the response. The model can allow us to reliably predict the pretilt angle with respect to the varying process conditions.

A good LC alignment by IB exposure on a NDLC surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the IB aligned IPS cell can be observed. The goodelectro-optical (EO) characteristics of the IB aligned IPS cell was observed with oblique IB exposure on the NDLC as a-C:H thin film for 1 min.

  • This paper introduces homogeneous liquid crystal (LC) orientations on chemically modulated polystyrene (PS) surfaces using various ion beam (IB) exposure time. Transparent PS was replaced with conventional polyimide material. As a non-contact process, IB bombardment process induced LC orientation in the direction parallel to the IB process. Through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it was shown that the chemical compositional changes of the IB-irradiated PS surfaces were determined as a function of IB exposure time.Using this analysis, the optimal IB bombardment condition was determined at IB exposure time of up to 15 s. Moreover, thermal stability on IB-irradiated PS surfaces were carried out which showed that a relatively high IB exposure time induced a thermally stable LC alignment property.

  • In this paper, we intend to make fringe-field switching (FFS) mode cell by the ion beam (IB) alignment method on the a-C:H thin film, to analyze electro-optical characteristics in this cell. We studied on the suitable inorganic thin film for fringe-field switching (FFS) cell and the aligning capabilities of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the alignment material of a-C:H thin film as working gas at 30 W rf bias condition. A high pretilt angle of about 5 $^{\circ}C$ by ion beam (IB) exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was measured. Consequently, the high pretilt angle and the good thermal stability of LC alignment by the IB alignment method on the a-C:H thin film surface as working gas at 30 W rf bias condition can be achieved. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V -T) and response time curve of the IE-aligned FFS-LCD was observed with oblique IB exposure on the a-C:H thin films. Also, AC V-T hysteresis characteristics of the IB-aligned FFS-LCD with IE exposure on the a-C:H thin films is almost the same as that of the rubbing-aligned FFS cell on a polyimide (PI) surface.

  • The aligned liquid crystals (LCs) display on SiNx thin films using ion-beam (IB) irradiation was studied with controllability ofpretilt angle depending on incident energies of the IB. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was used to orient the LCs on SiNx alignment films. The LCs alignment property for the SiNx thin films were observed to verify the practical application potential (figure1). A good LCs alignment of vertical alignment LCs cells on SiNx thin film surfaces irradiated with incident IB energy of 1800eV was achieved. Also, a good LC alignment by the IB irradiation on the SiNx thin film surface was observed at an annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. However, the alignment defects of the nematic liquid crystal was observed at an annealing temperature above $230^{\circ}C$. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of LCs on SiNx thin film surfaces irradiated with IB energy was used for the surface analysis.

Electro-optical property of twisted nematic liquid crystal cells with ion-beam irradiated polymer surface (이온빔처리된 고분자막을 이용한 TN 셀의 전기광학특성)

  • To date, rubbing has been widely used to align LC molecules uniformly. Although rubbing can be simple, it has fundamental problems such as the generation of defects by dust and static electricity, and difficulty in achieving a uniform LC alignment on a large substrate. Therefore, noncontact alignment has been investigated. Ion beam induced alignment method, which provides controllability, nonstop process, and high resolution display. We investigated the high pretilt angle effects on electro-optical properties of ion beam (IB)-irradiated liquid crystal cells. on a blended polymer surface. High pretilt angle of liquid crystals IB-irradiated on a blended polymer surface including such as 5% and 10% of homeotropic polymer contents can' be achieved. The threshold voltages of IB-irradiated twisted nematic (TN) cells on a blended polymer surface decrease with increasing the pretilt angle. Also, the rising time of IB-irradiated TN cells decreases with increasing the pretilt angle. However the decay time of IB-irradiated TN cells increases with increasing the pretilt angle. Consequently, the electro-optical properties of IB-irradiated TN cells depend strongly on the pretilt angle in a blended polymer surface.
