In the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$, the transport of iodide ion was investigated by Through-diffusion method. It is confirmed that Iodide ion is transported by diffusion process in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ as well as in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$. However, the lag-time of iodide ion in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ is larger than that in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$. The increase of the lag-time was observed in pure iodide ion solution and also in 0.1M NaCl-iodide ion solution. The apparent diffusion coefficient of iodide ion in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ has lower value than that in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$. The effect of $Ag_2O$ on the effective diffusion coefficient was not clearly investigated in the compacted bentonite containing $Ag_2O$ while the values of effective diffusion coefficient of iodide ion in the compacted bentonite without $Ag_2O$ obtained in this study were similar to those in the compacted bentonite reported in the literature.

As a novel water treatment membrane, concept of ceramic-based graphene membrane (CbGM) was suggested, and its mass transport behavior was investigated. The selectivity of CbGM was given by graphene material which is consisting of active layer, only transmitting water, but rejecting salts. Filtration-assisted assembly methods was employed as a facile method to fabricate CbGM. Surface morphology and characteristics of CbGM were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle. In addition, three different kinds of solutes (i.e., NaCl, $MgCl_2$, $Na_2SO_4$) were tested in batch forward osmosis system to confirm the mass transport behavior. Through surface morphology analysis and mass transport behavior, it was revealed that interlocking between graphene layers is very important, rather than thickness of laminated graphene layers, in terms of selectivity to CbGM. All the anions in each solute showed faster transport than those of cations. In addition, solutes which have high ion valence charge ratio of anion to cation ($Z^-/Z^+$) was easier to be passed through CbGM. It indirectly implied that the surface charge of CbGM appear to be positive. In addition, It showed that surface charge of CbGM has a great role on mass transport, in particular, transport of matter having charges, generally ions.
Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and halorhodopsin (hR), which exist in the membrane of Halobacterium salinarum, are light-driven ion pumps. In spite of high similarity of primary and tertiary structures between bR and hR, these membrane proteins transport different ions, proton and chloride, in the opposite direction. From alignment of the amino acid sequences, Thr-89 of bR is homologous to Ser-l15 of hR from Halobacterium salinarum (shR). X-ray structure of shR has revealed that OH group of this residue directly interacts with CI$\^$-/ Thus, Ser-lI5 of shR is expected to play an important role in CI$\^$-/ binding and transport. In this study, we expressed wild type hR from Natronobacterium pharaonis (PhR) and Sl30A, which corresponds to Ser-l15 of shR, in E. coli in order to clarify binding affinity of chloride ion and photocycle reactions. From the titration with CI$\^$-/, affinity of Sl30A became quite lower than that of WT (WT 6 mM, Sl30A 89 mM). Furthermore, from the flash photolysis with pulse laser of λ$\_$max/ at 532 nm, the reaction rate of SI30A from 0 intermediate to hR ground state was found to become apparently slower than that of WT. The singular value decomposition (SVD) and global fitting analyses of the photocycles were performed to identify all photointermediates and determine the reaction rates.
Antisense oligonucleotide represents an interesting tool for selective inhibition of gene expression. However, their low efficiency of introduction within intact cells remains to be overcome. Antisense-$TGF{\beta}$ (25 mer) and antisense-$TGF{\beta}$ (18 mer) were used to study the cellular transport and biological function of antisense oligonucleotide in vitro. Since TGF and TNF play on important role in regulating the nitric oxide production from macrophages, the action of the above antisense oligonucleotides was easily monitored by the determination of nitrite. Poly-L-lysine, benzalkonium chloride and tetraphenylphosphonium chloride were used as polycations, which neutralize the negative charge of antisense oligonucleotide. The production of nitric oxide mediated by .gamma.-IFN in mouse peritoneal macrophage was increased by antisense-TGF.betha. in a dose-dependent manner. Antisense-$TGF{\beta}$ reduced the nitric oxide release from activated RAW 264.7 cells. Significant enhancement in the nitric oxide production was investigated by the cotreatment of poly-L-lysine with antisense-$TGF{\beta}$On the meanwhile, inhibition effect of antisense-$TGF{\beta}$ is not changed by the addition of poly-L-lysine. These results demonstrate that control of expression of $TGF{\beta}$ and TNF.alpha. gene is achieved using antisense technology and the cellular uptake of antisense oligonucleotide could be enhanced by ion-pairing.
Although it has been reported that hormones or chemicals, which increase in intracellular cAMP, produced $Mg^{2+}$ release from the heart, it is not well characterized whether a specific $Mg^{2+}$ exchanger is involved in cAMP-induced $Mg^{2+}$ efflux in the mammalian hearts. In this work, we studied the relationship between the increase in intracellular cAMP and ion transport system on $Mg^{2+}$ regulation in the perfused rat heart and isolated myocytes. The $Mg^{2+}$ content in the perfusate and supernatant were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The addition of membrane permeable cAMP analogue to the perfused hearts and myocytes induced a $Mg^{2+}$ efflux in the dose dependent manners. $Mg^{2+}$ efflux was stimulated by cAMP modulators (forskolin, IBMX and Ro20-1724) in the perfused hearts and myocytes. cAMP-induced $Mg^{2+}$ efflux was inhibited by $H_7$, benzamil or imipramine in the perfused hearts and myocytes, but not by EIPA. We confirmed that a significant $Mg^{2+}$ efflux was induced by an increase in intracellular cAMP in the hearts and myocytes. The cAMP-induced increase of $Mg^{2+}$ efflux in the hearts may be involved in ion transport system ($Na^+-Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^+-Mg^{2+}$ exchanger).

While high-dose ionizing radiation results in long term cellular cytotoxicity, chronic low-dose (<0.2 Gy) of X- or ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation can be beneficial to living organisms by inducing radiation hormesis, stimulating immune function, and adaptive responses. During chronic low-dose-rate radiation (LDR) exposure, whole body of mice is exposed to radiation, however, it remains unclear if LDR causes changes in gene expression of the whole brain. Therefore, we aim to investigate expressed genes (EGs) and signaling pathways specifically regulated by LDR-irradiation ($^{137}Cs$, a cumulative dose of 1.7 Gy for total 100 days) in the whole brain. Using microarray analysis of whole brain RNA extracts harvested from ICR and AKR/J mice after LDR-irradiation, we discovered that two mice strains displayed distinct gene regulation patterns upon LDR-irradiation. In ICR mice, genes involved in ion transport, transition metal ion transport, and developmental cell growth were turned on while, in AKR/J mice, genes involved in sensory perception, cognition, olfactory transduction, G-protein coupled receptor pathways, inflammatory response, proteolysis, and base excision repair were found to be affected by LDR. We validated LDR-sensitive EGs by qPCR and confirmed specific upregulation of S100a7a, Olfr624, and Gm4868 genes in AKR/J mice whole brain. Therefore, our data provide the first report of genetic changes regulated by LDR in the mouse whole brain, which may affect several aspects of brain function.
Distribution of suspended particulate matter, dissolved oxygen and major inorganic nutrients along a meridional section ($126^{\circ}$ 33' E) in the Cheju Strait is described along with the hydrographic and current data obtained during April 25-27, 1995. The current measurements was conducted using a vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). Repeated coverage along an ADCP transect during 25 hours allows to calculate the daily mean along- and cross-strait currents. Measured material concentrations and the mean current speed were used to estimate the flux density (cencentration times current speed) of materials. Two types of depth distibution of flux densities were observed. for nitrate and suspended particulate matter, the depth distribution pattern of materials determines those of flux densities. However, flow patterns determine those of flux densities for dissolved oxygen, phosphate and silicic acid. The total along-strait water volume transport is about 0.3 Sv (1Sv $10^{6}$$m^{3}/s^{-1}$). The total along-strait material transports are estimated to be 3.1 $${\times}$10^{5}$$g/s^{-1},$ 2.4 ${\times}$$10^{6}\;g/s^{-1},$ 7.I ${\times}$$10^{2}\;mol/s^{-1},$ 3.I ${\times}$$10\;mol/s^{-1},$ 1.7 ${\times}$$10^{3}\;mol/s^{-1}$ for suspended particulate matter, dissolved oxygen, nitrate ion, silicic acid and phosphate ion, respectively.
In this study, we analyzed the effects of current density and electroosmotic phenomena on the desalination performance of electrodialysis (ED). We conducted ED experiments under constant voltage conditions, changing the concentration of the concentrate solution from 10 to 200 g/L. During the ED operation, we measured the current density and charge supplied to the stack, the concentration of the diluted and concentrated solutions, and the amount of water transported by electroosmosis to analyze desalination performance. As the concentration of the concentrated solution increased, the selectivity of the ion exchange membrane decreased, resulting in a decrease in current efficiency. Moreover, the current efficiency was found to be influenced by the current density supplied. When the current density exceeded 15 mA/cm2, back diffusion of ions was suppressed, leading to an increase in current efficiency. We also investigated the specific water transport by electroosmosis during the ED operation. We found that the amount of water transported increased proportionally to the concentration ratio of the concentrated and diluted solutions. When the concentration ratio exceeded 100, the specific water transport rapidly increased due to osmotic pressure, making it challenging to obtain a concentrated solution greater than 200 g/L.
The myocardial nuclear medicine examination is widely performed to diagnose myocardium disease using various radionuclides. Although image quality according to radionuclides has improved, the radiation exposure for target organ as well as peripheral organs should be considered. Here, the aim of this study was to evaluate absorbed dose (Gy) for peripheral organs in myocardial nuclear medicine scan from myocardium according to various scan environments based on Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation environment was modeled 5 cases, which were considered by radionuclides, number of injections, and radiodosage. In addition, the each radionuclide simulation such as distribution fraction was considered by recommended standard protocol, and the mesh computational female phantom, which is provided by International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) 145, was used using the particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS) version 3.33. Based on the results, the closer to the myocardium, the higher the absorbed dose values. In addition, application for dual injection for radionuclides leaded to high absorbed dose compared with single injection for radionuclide. Consequently, there is difference for absorbed dose according to radionuclides, number of injections, and radiodosage. To detect the accurate diseased area, acquisition for improved image quality is crucial process by injecting radionuclides, however, we need to consider absorbed dose both target and peripheral inner organs from radionuclides in terms radiation protection for patient.

The present study concerns the inhibition of Calcium Nitrite Inhibitor(Ca(NO2)2) in mortar contaminated by chloride ions. Thus, the corrosion resistance and chloride transport were measured for the mortar containing calcium nitrite inhibitor. As a result, an increase in the dosage of calcium nitrite inhibitor resulted in an increase in the chloride threshold concentration for reinforcement corrosion, while the rate of chloride transport was accelerated. However, the calcium nitrite inhibitor could not guarantee the time to corrosion, due to the increased mobility of chlorides. To ensure the passivity of steel, the dosage of calcium nitrite inhibitor must exceed a certain dosage, ranging from 2.0~3.0 % by cement weight.
