The removal characteristics of cadmium in micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) were investigated by using an anionic biosurfactant, deoxycholic acid (DCA). The ultrafiltration experiments were performed in a batch-type stirred cell. The ultrafiltration membranes used were Millipore YM1, YM3, YM10, and YM30 which had a difference in molecular weight cut-off. The presence of cadmium ion in DCA solution tends to reduce the critical micell concentration considerably and increase the micell size. The molecular weight cut-off of ultrafiltration membrane had a minimal effect on cadmium removal whereas DCA/Cd ratio had a substantial influence. When DCA/Cd ratio was 3, the removal efficiency of cadmium was more than 99.6%. A relative flux, which is defined as ratio of the flux for a separation trial to that of deionized water run using the same piece of membrane, decreased in the order of YM3 > YM1 > YM10 > YM30.
Cobalt(III) complexes with sexidentate ligands, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-amino-ethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine (ten), -1,3-propanediamine (ttn), -1,4-butanediamine (ttmd), -(R,R)-and -(R,S)-2,4-pentanediamine (tptn) were prepared, and the characterization of d-d absorption band on the variation of chelate ring size and conformation of these complexes were studied by means of electronic spectra. The first d-d absorption bands of $[Co(L)]^{3+}$ complexes are shifted to smaller wave numbers in the order. ttn > (R,R)-tptn > ten > ttmd${\simeq}$(R,S)-tptn for (L). The UV, $^{13}C$ NMR, and Circular Dichroism studies indicate that the R,S-tptn ligand of $[Co(R,S-tptn)]^{3+}$ complex coodinates to cobalt(Ⅲ) ion as a sexidentate with one methyl group in axial position.
Background: We previously reported that ginsan, a polysaccharide extracted from Panax ginseng had an immunostimulatory activity such as mitogenic activity, activation of macrophages and killer cells, and production of a variety of cytokines which resulted in antitumor and antiseptic effects. We further purified $\alpha$-(1$\longrightarrow$6)-glucan and $\beta$-(2$\longrightarrow$6)-fructan from the ginsan with size exclusion and ion-exchange column chromatography successively. In this study, we performed the structure-based activity of ginsan by comparison with known polysacchrides such as $\beta$-glucan, curdlan, laminarin, levan, dextran, lentinan and OK-432. Methods: To investigate the immunostimulatory activity of several polysaccharide compounds, we investigated the stimulation of lymphocytes proliferation, the generation of activated killer cells and the secretion of nitrites from activated macrophages. Results: Of polysaccharides tested, curdlan and ginsan stimulated lymphocyte proliferation, suggesting that the molecular weight and composition of polysaccharide are dependent on the mitogenic activity. The production of nitric oxide was significantly increased in curdlan, levan, ginsan and its fraction, indicating that fructan has also capacity to activate macrophages and may devote to kill pathogens. In addition, the activation of macrophages was seemed to be independent of molecular weight of polysaccharide. The generation of AK cells was exhibited in order of curdlan, OK-432> F1, ginsan, F3> levan> etc. The AK activity may be dependent on molecular weight and composition of polysaccharides. Conclusion: Unfortunately, purified polysaccharide from ginsan were less active on immunostimulatory activity than mixed compounds of polysaccharides. From the viewpoint of structure and activity relationships, we found several characteristic features.
A dual-phase ceramic membrane consisting of gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) as an oxygen ion conducting phase and $MnCo_2O_4$ as an electron conducting phase was fabricated by sintering a GDC and $MnCo_2O_4$ powder mixture. The $MnCo_2O_4$ was found to maintain its spinel structure at temperatures lower than $1200^{\circ}C$. (Mn,Co)(Mn,Co)$O_4$ spinel, manganese and cobalt oxides formed in the sample sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ in an air atmosphere. XRD analysis revealed that no reaction phases occurred between GDC and $MnCo_2O_4$ at $1200^{\circ}C$. The electrical conductivity did not exhibit a linear relationship with the $MnCo_2O_4$ content in the composite membranes, in accordance with percolation theory. It increased when more than 15 vol% of $MnCo_2O_4$ was added. The oxygen permeation fluxes of the composite membranes increased with increasing $MnCo_2O_4$ content and this can be explained by the increase in electrical conductivity. However, the oxygen permeation flux of the composite membranes appeared to be governed not only by electrical conductivity, but also by the microstructure, such as the grain size of the GDC matrix.

In this work, Ta-substituted $Li_7La_3Zr_{2-x}O_{12}$ (LLZTO) powder and pellets with garnet cubic structure were fabricated and characterized by modified and optimized sol-gel synthesis. Ta-substituted LLZO powder with the smallest grain size and pure cubic structure with little pyrochlore phase was obtained by synthesis method in which Li and La sources in propanol solvent were mixed together with Zr and Ta sources in 2-methoxy ethanol. The LLZTO pellets made with the prepared powder showed cubic garnet structure for all conditions when the amount of Li addition was varied from 6.2 to 7.4 mol. All the X-ray peaks of the pyrochlore phase disappeared when the Li addition was increased above 7.0 mol. When the final sintering temperature was varied, the LLZTO pellet had a pyrochlore-mixed cubic phase above $1000^{\circ}C$. However, the surface morphology became much denser when the final sintering temperature was increased. The sol-gel-driven LLZTO pellet with a sintering temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ showed a lithium ionic conductivity of 0.21 mS/cm when Au was adopted as electrode material for the blocking capacitor. The results of this study suggest that modified sol-gel synthesis is the optimum method to obtain cubic phase of LLZTO powder for highly dense and conductive solid electrolyte ceramics.
When metal oxides are added into crystalline glaze, colors of glaze and crystals are similar as colorants generally. But the case of NiO in zinc crystalline glaze is different from general color development. When NiO is added to zinc crystalline glaze it can develop two or three colors. The active use of color development mechanism by adding NiO to the zinc crystalline glaze to control color of the base glaze and crystal with stability is investigated. This report is expected to contribute to the ceramic industry in improving application of zinc crystalline glaze. For the experiment of NiO, the quantity of NiO additives is changed to the base glaze for the most adequate formation of willemite crystal from previous research and firing condition: temperature increasing speed $5^{\circ}C/min$, holding 1 h at $1270^{\circ}C$, annealing speed $3^{\circ}C/min$ till $1170^{\circ}C$, holding 2 h at $1170^{\circ}C$ then naturally annealed. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis, and Micro-Raman. The result of the procedure as follows; Ni substitutes for Zn ion then glaze develops blue willemite crystals, as if cobalt is used, on brown glaze base. When NiO quantity is increased to over 5 wt%, willemite size is decreased, and the density of the crystal is increased, at the same time $Ni_2SiO_4$ (olivine) phase, the second phase, has been developed. The excessive NiO is reacted with silicate in the glass then developed green $Ni_2SiO_4$ (olivine), and quantity of $Ni_2SiO_4$ (olivine) is increased as quantity of willemite is decreased. It is proved to create three colors, blue, brown and green by controlling the quantity of NiO to the zinc crystalline glaze and it will improve the multiple use of colors to the ceramic design.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the monomer ratio on properties of the polymer-modified mortars based on styrene and butyl acrylate latexes, and to obtain basic data necessary to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. This paper deals with the effects of monomer ratio on the typical properties of the polymer-modified mortars with styrene and butyl acrylate latexes. The polymer-modified mortars using the styrene and butyl acrylate latexes polymerized with various monomer ratios are prepared with different polymer-cement ratios, and tested for the particle size of polymer latexes, air contents, water-cement ratios, flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption, and chloride-ion penetration. From the test results, the polymer-modified mortars using styrene and butyl acrylate latexes with the mix proportions of synthesis having monomer ratios of 50:50 to 60:40 for the appropriate mix proportions can be recommended for practical applications. Their basic properties are greatly affected by the polymer-cement ratio rather than the monomer ratio, and are improved over un-modified mortar.
Objective: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a task complexity model combining task design aspects and complexity dimensions and to explain an approach to identifying and organizing task complexity factors based on the model. Background: Task complexity is a critical concept in describing and predicting human performance in complex systems such as nuclear power plants(NPPs). In order to understand the nature of task complexity, task complexity factors need to be identified and organized in a systematic manner. Although several methods have been suggested for identifying and organizing task complexity factors, it is rare to find an analytical approach based on a theoretically sound model. Method: This study regarded a task as a system to be designed. Three levels of design ion, which are functional, behavioral, and structural level of a task, characterize the design aspects of a task. The behavioral aspect is further classified into five cognitive processing activity types(information collection, information analysis, decision and action selection, action implementation, and action feedback). The complexity dimensions describe a task complexity from different perspectives that are size, variety, and order/organization. Combining the design aspects and complexity dimensions of a task, we developed a model from which meaningful task complexity factors can be identified and organized in an analytic way. Results: A model consisting of two facets, each of which is respectively concerned with design aspects and complexity dimensions, were proposed. Additionally, twenty-one task complexity factors were identified and organized based on the model. Conclusion: The model and approach introduced in this paper can be effectively used for examining human performance and human-system interface design issues in NPPs. Application: The model and approach introduced in this paper could be used for several human factors problems, including task allocation and design of information aiding, in NPPs and extended to other types of complex systems such as air traffic control systems as well.

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) was purified from Aspergillus aculeatus, a filamentous fungus previously isolated from infected tongue of a patient. The enzyme, apparently homogeneous, had a specific activity of $220\;units\;mg^{-1}$/, a molecular weight of $105,000{\pm}5,000$ Dal by gel filtration and subunit size of $52,000{\pm}1,100$ Dal by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The substrate specificity was extremely strict, with glucose 6-phosphate (G6P) being oxidized by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) only. At assay pH of 7.5, the enzyme had $K_m$ values of $6\;{\mu}m$ and $75\;{\mu}m$ for NADP and G6P respectively. The $k_{cat}$ was $83\;s^{-1}$. Steady-state kinetics at pH 7.5 produced converging linear Lineweaver-Burk plots as expected for ternary-complex mechanism. The patterns of product and dead-end inhibition suggested that the enzyme can bind NADP and G6P separately to form a binary complex, indicating a random-order mechanism. The enzyme was irreversibly inactivated by heat in a linear fashion, with G6P providing a degree of protection. Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP), adenosinetriphosphate (ATP), and fructose 6-phosphate (F6P), in decreasing order, are effective inhibitors. Zinc and Cobalt ions were effective inhibitors although cobalt ion was more potent; the two divalent metals were competitive inhibitors with respect to G6P, with $K_i$ values of $6.6\;{\mu}m$ and $4.7\;{\mu}m$ respectively. It is proposed that inhibition by divalent metal ions, at low NADPH /NADP ratio, is another means of controlling pentosephosphate pathway.
Cytoplasmic $\alpha$-glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase from fruit-bat-breast muscle was purified by ion-exchange and affinity chromatography. The specific activity of the purified enzyme was approximately 120 units/mg of protein. The apparent molecular weight of the native enzyme, as determined by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 was $59,500{\pm}650$ daltons; its subunit size was estimated to be $35,700{\pm}140$ by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The true Michaelis-Menten constants for all substrates at pH 7.5 were $3.9{\pm}0.7\;mM$, $0.65{\pm}0.05\;mM$, $0.26{\pm}0.06\;mM$, and $0.005{\pm}0.0004\;mM$ for L-glycerol-3-phosphate, $NAD^+$, DHAP, and NADH, respectively. The true Michaelis-Menten constants at pH 10.0 were $2.30{\pm}0.21\;mM$ and $0.20{\pm}0.01\;mM$ for L-glycerol-3-phosphate and $NAD^+$, respectively. The turnover number, $k_{cat}$, of the forward reaction was $1.9{\pm}0.2{\times}10^4\;s^{-1}$. The treatment of the enzyme with 5,5'-dithiobis-2-nitrobenzoic acid (DTNB) under denaturing conditions indicated that there were a total of eight cysteine residues, while only two of these residues were reactive towards DTNB in the native enzyme. The overall results of the in vitro experiments suggest that $\alpha$-glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase of the fruit bat preferentially catalyses the reduction of dihydroxyacetone phosphate to glycerol-3-phosphate.
