  • There has been an explosive development of nanocrystal (NC) synthesis and application due to their composition-dependent specific properties. Despite the composition, shape, and size of NCs foremost determine their physicochemical properties, the surface state and molecule conjugation also drastically change their characteristics. To make practical use of NCs, it is a prerequisite to understand the NC surface state and the degree to which they have been modified because the reaction occurs on the interface between the NCs and the surrounding medium. We report in here an analysis method to identify conjugated ligands and their binding states on semiconductor nanocrystals based on their molecular information. Surface science techniques, such as time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and FT-IR spectroscopy, are adopted based on the micro-aggregated sampling method. Typical trioctylphosphine oxide-based synthesis methods of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) have been criticized because of the peculiar effects of impurities on the synthesis processes. Since the ToF-SIMS technique provides molecular composition evidence on the existence of certain ligands, we were able to clearly identify the n-octylphosphonic acid (OPA) as a surface ligand on CdSe/ZnS QDs. Furthermore, the complementary use of the ToF-SIMS technique with the FT-IR technique could reveals the OPA ligands' binding state as bidentate complexes.

  • NTR1 gene of Brassica campestris L. ssp. perkinensis encodes a floral nectary-specific methyltransferase. In this study, the NTR1 cDNA was expressed in E. coli to examine the enzymatic characteristics of the protein product. The GST-NTR1 fusion protein was purified to near homogeneity, showing that the size of NTR1 was 44 kDa. The protein reacted specifically with jasmonic acid (JA), consuming methyl group from S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM). GC-MS analysis revealed that the compound produced was authentic methyl jasmonate (MeJA), suggesting that NTR1 is an S-adenosyl-L-methionine: jasmonic acid carboxyl methyltransferase. Km values of NTR1 for JA and SAM were 38.0 and $6.4{\mu}M$, respectively. Optimal activity of the NTR1 was observed at $20^{\circ}C$, pH 7.5, in the presence of 100-150 mM KCl. Thus, kinetic properties, thermal characteristics, optimal pH, and ion-dependency of the NTR1 activity were almost identical to those of Arabidopsis JA methyltransferase JMT, indicating that these two proteins are orthologues of each other.

  • Numerical analysis and measurements of the velocity and temperature distributions in buoyancy assisting laminar mixed convection flow over a vertically located, two-dimensional backward-facing step are reported. Laser-Doppler Velocimeter and Constant Temperature Anemometer operated in constant current were used to measure simultaneously the velocity and temperature distributions in the recirculation region downstream of the step. The reattachment length was measured by using flow visualization technique for different inlet velocities, wall temperatures and step heights. While the reattachment length $X_r$ increases as the inlet velocity or step height increase, it decreases as the buoyancy force increases, causing the size of the recirculation region to decrease. For the experimental range of $Gr_s$/$Re_{s}^{2}$$\times$$10^3$<17, a correlation equation for the reattachment length can be given by $X_{r}=1.05(2.13+0.021 Re_{s})exp$ $(-33.7_s^{-0.186}/Gr_{s}/Re_{s}^2).$ The Nusselt number is found to increase and the location of its maximum value moves closer to the step as the buoyancy force increases. The location of the maximum Nusselt number occurs downstream of the reattachment point, and distance between the reattachment point and the location of the maximum Nusselt mumber increases as the buoyancy force increases. Computational prediction agrees favorably well with measured results.

  • Cold temperature development (CTD) of electron beam (EB) patterned resists and subsequent dry etching were investigated for fabrication of nano-patterned Niobium (Nb). Bulky Nb fims on GaAs substrates were deposited with EB evaporation. Line patterns on Nb cathode were fabricated by EB patterning and reactive ion etching (RIE). Size deviations of nano-sized line patterns from CAD designed patterns are dependent on the EB total exposure, but it can be improved by CTD of EB-exposed resist. Line patterns of 10 to 300 nm widths of EB-exposed resist patterns were drawn under various exposure conditions of $0.2{\mu}s$/dot (total 240,000 dot) with a constant current (50 pA). Compared with room temperature development (RTD), the CTD improves pattern resolution due to the suppression of backscattering effect. RIE with $CF_4$ was performed for formation of several nano-sized line patterns on Nb. Each EB-resist patterned samples with RTDs and CTDs were etched with two different $CF_4$ gas pressures of 5 Pa. Nb etching rate increases while GaAs (or ZEP) etching rate decreases as the chamber pressure increases. This different dependent of the etching rate on the $CF_4$ pressure between Nb and GaAs (or ZEP) has a significant meaning because selective etching of nano-sized Nb line patterns is possible without etching of the underlying active layer.

  • One of the critical consumables in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a specialized solution or slurry, which typically contains both abrasives and chemicals acting together to planarize films. In single abrasive slurry (SAS), the solid phase consists of only one type of abrasive particle. On the other hand, mixed abrasive slurry (MAS) consists of a mixture of at least two types of abrasive particles. In this paper, we have studied the CMP characteristics of mixed abrasive slurry (MAS) retreated by adding of $CeO_2$ abrasives within 1:10 diluted silica slurry (DSS). The slurry designed for optimal performance should produce reasonable removal rates, acceptable polishing selectivity with respect to the underlying layer, low surface defects after polishing, and good slurry stability. The modified abrasives in MAS are evaluated with respect to their particle size distribution, surface morphology, and CMP performances such as removal rate and non-uniformity. As an experimental result, we obtained the comparable slurry characteristics compared with original silica slurry in the viewpoint of high removal rate and low non-uniformity.

  • Several new ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chloromethyl styrene-1, 4-di-vinylbenzene with 1%, 2%, 5% and 10%-crosslinking and macrocyclic ligands of cryptand type by interpolymerization method. The adsorption characteristics and the pH, time, solvents and concentration dependence of the adsorption of metal ions by this resin were studied. The correlation between the separation characteristics of uranium and transition metal on the resins and the stability constants of complexes with macrocyclic ligands have been examined. The resins were very stable in both acidic and basic media and had good resistance to heat at $280^{\circ}C$. The $UO_2^{2+}$ aqueous solution was not adsorbed on the resins below pH 3.0, but the power of adsorption of $UO_2^{2+}$ increased rapidly above pH 4.0. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was twenty minutes and adsorptive power decreased in proportion to crosslinking size of the resins and order of dielectric constants of solvents used and the selective sequence for metal cations is in the order of $UO_2^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Ce^{3+}$ .

  • In this paper, a new parallel computation method, which fully utilize the parallel processors both in mesh generation and FEM calculation for 2D/3D process simulation, is presented. High performance parallel FEM and parallel linear algebra solving technique was showed that excessive computational requirement of memory size and CPU time for the three-dimensional simulation could be treated successively. Our parallelized numerical solver successfully interpreted the transient enhanced diffusion (TED) phenomena of dopant diffusion and irregular shape of R-LOCOS within 15 minutes. Monte Carlo technique requires excessive computational requirement of CPU time. Therefore high performance parallel solving technique were employed to our cascade sputter simulation. The simulation results of Our sputter simulator allowed the calculation time of 520 sec and speedup of 25 using 30 processors. We found the optimized number of ion injection of our MC sputter simulation is 30,000.

  • The synthesis of highly concentrated silver nano sol assisted by polymeric dispersant (polyelectrolytes) for inkjet method was studied. The silver nano sol was prepared with AgNO$_3$, polyelectrolytes (HS5468cf ; polyacrylic ammonium salt), and reducing agent. The polyelectrolytes play an important role in formation of complex composed of Ag$\^$+/ion and carboxyl group (COO$\^$-/), result in preparation of highly dispersed silver nano particles. The optimization of added amount of polyelectrolytes, and concentration of silver nano sol was studied. The silver nanoparticles were evaluated by XRD, particle size/zeta potential analyzer and FE-TEM. The silver nanoparticles with the range of 10 nm in diameter were produced. The concentration of batch-synthesized silver nano sol was possible up to 40 wt%.

  • We studied the microstructure and magnetic property of the pulsed DC magnetron sputtered $Zn_{\0.8}Co_{0.2}O$ film as a function of substrate temperatures. The X-ray patterns of the $Zn_{\0.8}Co_{0.2}O$ film showed a strong (002) preferential orientation at $500^{\circ}C$. The films with a crystallite size of 23-35 nm were grown in the form of nano-sized structure and this tendency was remarkable with increasing substrate temperature. The UV-visible result showed that the $Zn_{\0.8}Co_{0.2}O$ film prepared above $300^{\circ}C$ has a high optical transmittance of over $80\%$ in the visible region. The absorption bands were observed due to sp-d interchange action by $Co^{2+}$ complex ion and dd transition in the region from 500 to 700nm. The resistivity of the film was below $10^{-1}\;\Omega-cm\;above\;300^{\circ}C$. The AGM analysis results for the all films showed the magnetic hysteresis curves of ferromagnetic nature. The low electrical resistivity and room temperature ferromagnetism of ZnCoO thin films 'deposited above $300^{\circ}C$ suggested the possibility for the application to Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMSs).
