  • Zirconium alloys are widely used in nuclear reactors as structural materials. During the operation, they are exposed to fast neutrons. Ion irradiation is used to simulate the damage introduced by neutron irradiation. In this article, we briefly review the neutron irradiation damage of zirconium alloys, then summarize the effect of ion irradiation on microstructural evolution, mechanical and corrosion properties, and their relationships. The microstructure components consist of dislocation loops, second phase precipitates, and gas bubbles. The microstructure parameters are also included such as domain size and microstrain determined by X-ray diffraction and the S-parameter determined by positron annihilation. Understanding the relationships of microstructure and properties is necessary for developing new advanced materials with higher irradiation tolerance.

  • The surfaces of WC-Co and SCM415 were etched to form a micro size protrusion for oil based ultra low friction applications using an ion bombardment process in a filtered vacuum arc plasma. WC-Co species showed that a self-patterned surface was available by the ion bombarding process due to the difference of sputtering yield of WC and Co. And the increasing rate of roughness was 0.6 nm/min at -600 V substrate bias voltage. The increasing rate of roughness of SCM415 species was 1.5 nm/min at -800 V, but the selfpatterning effect as shown in WC-Co was not appeared. When the SCM415 species pretreated by electrical discharge machining is etched, the increasing rate of roughness increased from 1.5 nm/min to 40 nm/min at -800 V substrate bias voltage and the uniform surface treatment was available.

  • Lithium-ion batteries have used the layered $LiCoO_2$ materials as cathodes, but Co is relatively toxic and expensive. In this regard, the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ has become appealing because manganese is inexpensive and environmentally benign. In general, cathodes for lithium ion batteries include carbon as a conductive agent that provides electron transfer between the active material and the current collector. In this work, we selected Acetylene Black and Super P Black as conducting agents, and then carried out comparative investigation for the performances of the cells using different conducting agents with different particle size. As a consequence, Li/$LiMn_2O_4$ cells with Super P Black show better electrochemical performances than those with Acetylene Black.

  • The ionic association constant (K) of N-methyl pyridinium iodide (NMPI) ion in several ethanol-water mixtures were determined by the combination of UV spectroscopy and conductance measurements using the Shedlovsky function as a correction factor. The measurement of electrical conductance and UV absorption were performed in 95, 90, 80 and 60 volume percentages of ethanol in the solvent mixture at 15, 25, 35 and 45 $({\pm}0.1)^{\circ}C$. The ion size parameter $(r_A+_D-)$ and the dipole moment $({\mu}_A+_D-)$ of NMPI ion were obtained from he linear plots of ln K vs. (1/D) and (D-1)/(2D+1), respectively. These ${\mu}_A+_D-$ values were in good agreement with the values of transition moment calculated from the equation, ${\mu}_{nm}=6.5168{\times}10^{-2}{\times}({\varepsilon}_{max}{\frac{\bar{\nu}_{\frac{1}{2}}}{\bar{\nu}_{max}})^{\frac{1}{2}}$ (Debye) which we have derived. The thermodynamic parameters indicate (1) that the water dipoles have an ordered rearrangement around the dipolar NMPI ions rather than the configuration existing in bulk free waters; and (2) that the equilibrium state between NMPI ion and its component ions are controlled by entropy.

  • Livestock wastewater containing high concentrations of organic matters and ammonia-nitrogen has been known as one of the recalcitrant wastewater. It is difficult to treat by conventional wastewater treatment techniques. This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of zeolite ion exchange and gamma-ray irradiation treatment of livestock wastewater. The removal efficiencies of $SCOD_{Cr}$ and $NH_3-N$ were significantly enhanced by gamma-ray irradiation after zeolite ion exchange as a pre-treatment. However, the effects of zeolite particle size on the $SCOD_{Cr}$ and $NH_3-N$ removal efficiencies were insignificant. These results indicate that the combined process of zeolite ion exchange and gamma-ray irradiation has potential for the treatment of livestock wastewater.

  • Slitting, which is supposed to be one of the most critical processes in Li-Ion battery manufacturing, is supposed to cut off the uncoated parts of the foil, and cut the wide foils into the size of the Li-ion batteries. Vibrations of slitting machines are the most critical factors for uneven cut surface such as surface roughness and burr, which are the main reasons of the tearing of microporous membranes to separate the cathodes and the anodes, and eventually causing explosion of the batteries. In this study, the structure of a slitting machine has been analyzed through computer simulations to figure out the main reasons of the vibrations. The result of the study shows that simple design alterations of the supporting area and roller without modifying the main structure of the machine can suppress the vibrations effectively, and further to prevent the devastating explosion.

  • Monomers of oxetane high explosives were theoretically examined in terms of reactivity, reaction mechanism and process of polymerization substituted by azido $(-CH_2N_3)$, nitrato $(-CH_2ONO_2)$ and hydrazino $(-CH_2N_2H_3)$ which belong to the 5th class hazardous materials and have explosiveness under acid catalyst using MINDO/3, MNDO, and AMI methods for formal charge, heat of formation, and energy level. Nucleophilicity and base of oxetane high explosives could be explained by negative charge size of oxetane oxygen atom and reactivity of oxetane in the growth stage of polymerization under acid catalyzer could be expected to be governed by positive charge size of axial carbon atom and low LUMO energy of electrophile. It could be estimated that carbenium ion was more beneficial in the conversion process of oxetane high explosives than that of stabilization energy (13.90~31.02 kcal/mole) of oxonium ion. In addition, concentration of oxonium ion and carbenium ion in equilibrium state influenced mechanism and it was also estimated that $S_N1$ mechanism reacts faster than that of $S_N2$ in prepolymer growth stage considering quick equilibrium based on form and calculation of polymerization under acid catalyzer.

  • The characteristics of atmospheric aerosols were investigated as a function of particle size and water solubility. The atmospheric aerosols were sampled with classifying into 12 size ranges by the use of Andersen low-pressure impactor. Collected aerosol particles were extracted by ultrapure water and filtered to be separated into water-soluble and insoluble components. The concentrations 12 elements in both components were determined by PIXE analysis. And the concentrations of 8 ions in the soluble component were analyzed by ion chromatography. In general, the mass size distribution of particulate matter was represented as a bimodal distribution. The mass size distributions of S$(SO_4^{2-}), K(K^+), Zn and NH_4^+$ skewed to the smaller size range and those of Si, Ca$(Ca^{2+}), Fe, Na^+ and Mg^{2+}$ skewed to the larger size range. They had roughly one peak in the fine and coarse particle region, respectively. On the other hand, the mass size distribution of Ti, Mn, Ni, Cu, $Cl^- and NO_3^-$ were represented as the bimodal distribution. Fe and Si in the aerosol particles extracted into pure water are existing in high insoluble state. Conversely, almost the whole of S is dissolved in water.

  • pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR), a photophobic sensor of haloalkaliphilic bacteria, Natronobacterium phar-aonis, has retinal as a chromophore covalently bound to Lys in G-helix via a protonated Schiff base (PSB), as is the same as bacteriorhodopsin (bR). For ppR, the corresponding counter-ion is Asp residue (Asp75) located in C-helix. Here we investigated the influence of the protonated state of this counter-ion and its location on the chromophore configuration. Under alkaline condition, the chromophore configuration of D75E mutant was analyzed by HPLC. D75E had a much larger content of 13-cis isomer: the ratio of 13-cis to all-trans was 6:4 while the wild-type had this ratio of 1 :9. On the other hand, under acidic condition where Glu was associated, D75E had no 13-cis retinal isomer. Mutants whose Asp75 was replaced by neutral amino acids (D75N and D75Q) did not contain 13-cis retinal. Furthermore, retinal isomer compositions and the change in the visible ab- sorption spectra (indicating the dissociation state of Glu75) were measured under varying pH, and these were almost the same dependencies. These results indicate that an important factor determining the 13-cis isomer content is the presence of negative charge of the counter-ion against PSB, but not the size of this residue. Com- parison between the wild-type and D75E in alkaline solutions indicates the influence of the location of the counter-ion.

  • In this article, we examine the influences of Ne and He buffer gases under confined Ar+ ion cloud in a homemade Paul ion trap in various pressures and confinement times. The trap is of small size (r0 = 1 cm) operating in a radio frequency (rf) voltage only mode, and has limited accuracy of 13 V. The electron impact and ionization process take place inside the trap and a Faraday cup has been used for the detection. Although the experimental results show that the Ar+ ion FWHM with Ne buffer gas is wider than the He buffer gas at the same pressure (1×10-1 mbar) and confinement time is about 1000 μs, nevertheless, a faster cooling was found with He buffer gas with 500 μs. ultimetly, the obtanied results performed an average cloud tempertures reduced from 1777 K to 448.3 K for Ne (1000 μs) and from 1787.9 K to 469.4 K for He (500 μs)
