[Purpose] This study was performed to investigate the acid-base and ion balance at rest and after exercise in healthy males under normoxia, moderate hypoxia, and severe hypoxia. [Methods] Ten healthy Korean males completed three different trials on different days, comprising exercise under normoxia (FiO2 = 20.9%, N trial), moderate hypoxia (FiO2 = 16.5%, MH trial), and severe hypoxia (FiO2 = 12.8%, SH trial). They undertook endurance exercise for 30 min on a cycle ergometer at the same relative exercise intensity equivalent to 80% maximal heart rate under all conditions. Capillary blood samples were obtained to determine acid-base and ion balance at rest and after exercise. [Results] Exercise-induced blood lactate elevations were significantly increased as hypoxic conditions became more severe; SH > MH > N trials (P = 0.003). After exercise, blood glucose levels were significantly higher in the SH trial than in the N and MH trials (P = 0.001). Capillary oxygen saturation (SCO2) levels were significantly lowered as hypoxic conditions became more severe; SH > MH > N trials (P < 0.001). The pH levels were significantly lower in the MH trial than that in the N trial (P = 0.010). Moreover, HCO3- levels were significantly lower in the SH trial than in the N trial, with significant interaction (P = 0.003). There were no significant differences in blood Na+, K+, and Ca2+ levels between the trials. [Conclusion] MH and SH trials induced greater differences in glucose, lactate, SCO2, pH, and HCO3- levels in capillary blood compared to the N trial. Additionally, lactate, SCO2, and HCO3- levels showed greater changes in the SH trial than in the MH trial. However, there were no significant differences in Na+, K+, and Ca2+ levels in MH and SH trials compared to the N trial.
Lithium ion battery is required to balance cells in order to minimize the electric capacity difference between the batteries. This paper proposes a cell balancing method by using inductor. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

Aerosol mass size distributions were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island in April 1998 and their compositions were analyzed. Microorifice Uniform Deposit Impactor(MOUDI) was used to collect aerosols. Sulfate and ammonium ions were predominatly present at fine mode of the aerosols while nitrate, chloride, and metal ions were mostly at coarse mode. Based on the size distribution of nitrate, it is suggested that most nitrate were from gas to particle conversion on coarse particles. Non-sea salt(nss) fraction of sulfate accounted for more than 90% of total sulfate mass concentration. In general, ion concentrations in this study are lower than those measured at the same site from the previous studies. Ion balance and chloride ion levels indicates that there had been anthropogenic chloride emission sources near to the site during the measurements.
To look into the degree of the long distance movement of the air pollution within Mt. Kyebang, Hongcheon, one of the clean regions, major ions, components of collected wet precipitation, were analyzed by using the ion chromatography after measuring pH and electrical conductivity. The quality assurance of chemical composition data was checked by considering the ion balance and electrical conductivity. Also, the pH of precipitation showed in the pH5.0~5.5 range, less than the pH5.6 in which the standards of the acid precipitation. On the whole, the more precipitation got, the less ion concentration became.: It could showed what it influenced on the fluctuation of the precipitation pH according to fluctuation and neutralization of the according materials. In the meantime, as composition ratios of wet deposition, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $nss-{SO_4}^{2-}$, ${NH_4}^+$ and $nss-Ca^{2+}$ accounted for high percentage. Especially, as the concentration of ${SO_4}^{2-}$, the artificial pollutant, and $Ca^{2+}$, the soil substance, showed high, Mt. Kyebang, Hongcheon having barely fixed air-pollutants sources was most likely to be influenced by the pollutants moved from long distances.
Dental plaque resides passively at a site and makes an active contribution to the maintenance of health. The bacterial composition of plaque remains relatively stable despite regular exposure to minor environmental stress. This stability, homeostasis is due to a dynamic balance of microbial interactions. However, the homeostasis can break down, leading to shifts in the balance of the microflora. This change can be a sign of initial dental caries. It is proposed that disease can be prevented or treated not only by targeting the putative pathogens but also by interfering with the processes that drive the breakdown in homeostasis. It is essential to understand the plaque as a mixed species biofilm. In this essay I reviewed an extension of the caries ecological hypothesis to explain the relation between dynamic changes in the phenotypic/genotypic properties of plaque bacteria and the demineralization and remineralization balance of the dental caries process. We will have the strategies to impact significantly on clinical practice as understanding dental biofilm.

Twenty four metal, nonmetal elements and 4 major anions in total suspended particulates (TSP) collected at two sites in Daejon city from october to december in 1991 by a Hi-vol sampler were thoroughly analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma/ Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP/AES) and Ion Chromatography (IC). These analyzed data were used to perform a receptor modeling using the Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) for the source apportionment of TSP sample. Approximately 60% TSP weight in industrial complex area was influenced by potential industrial sources and 25% was by heating fuels and automobile emissions, whereas a half of TSP in residential area was influenced by surrounding environment and more than 35% of TSP was influenced by heating fuels. The CMB model provided source apportionment results reasonably and scientifically with a minor limitation.
The NBI (Neutral BGeam Injection) System for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) is composed of ion sources, neutralizers, bending magnets, ion dumps, and calorimeter. The vacuum chamber, in which all of the beam line components are enclosed, is composed of differential pumping system for the effective transfer of the neutral beams. The needed pumping speeds of each of the divided vacuum chamber and the optimized gas flow rate ot the neutralizer were calculated with the help of the particle balance equations. The minimum gas flow rate to the ion sources for producing needed beam current (120kV, 65A, 78MW), the pressure distributions in the vacuum chamber for minimizing re-ionization loss, and the beam loss rate on the beam line components were used as the input in the calculation. Also the scenario for short pulse operation was determined by analysing the time dependent equations. It showed that beam extraction during less than 0.5 sec could be made only with TMP.

Neutral atom temperature was measured by Laser Rayleigh scattering method using neutral depletion by neutral heating with ideal gas law in Inductively coupled plasma. We observed sudden pressure change when plasma is turned on and off. We analyzed mechanism of neutral heating by employing zero-dimensional neutral and ion energy balance model simultaneously. The results showed that neutral atom temperature increase with ion density. The mechanism of neutral atom heating and cooling is mainly dominated by ion-neutral collision including elastic and charge-exchange collision and by wall cooling respectively.

A charge equalization converter with parallel-connected primary windings of transformers is proposed in digest. The proposed work effectively balance the voltage among Lithium-Ion battery cells despite each battery cell has low voltage gap compared with its SOC. The principle of the proposed work is that the equalizing energy from all battery strings moves to the lowest voltage battery through the isolated dc/dc converter controlled by the corresponding bi-directional switch. In this digest, a prototype of four Lithium-Ion battery cells is optimally designed and implemented, and experimental results show that the proposed method has excellent cell balancing performance.
An in-situ stress measurement interferometer is constructed and used to measure the intrinsic stress in Ti$O_2$ thin films during their growth by ion-assisted deposition. It is found that the stress increases with the momentum transferred by the ion beam to the growing film and is fairly well agreed with Windischmann's model. The variation of the stress with thickness is qualitatively explained in terms of the balance between the compressive stress produced by the ion beam and the surface diffusion determined by the surface temperature.
