  • Developing turbulent flows in a rotating 90 degree bend with square cross-section were measured by a hot-wire anemometer. The six orientation hot-wire technique was applied to measured the distributions of 3 mean velocities and 6 Reynolds stress components. Effects of Coriolis and centrifugal forces caused by the curvature and rotation of bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures were experimentally investigated Productive addition of Coriolis and centrifugal forces to the outward radial direction in the entrance region of bend increases the secondary flow intensity according to the rotational speeds. However, after 45 degree of bend, centrifugal force due to the rotation of bend may promote the break down of counter rotating vortex pair into multi-cellular pattern, thereby decreasing the production rate of turbulence energy and Reynolds stresses.

  • Three-dimensional vortex structures in the corner region of translating normal plates are visualized experimentally with defocusing digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex formation processes for three plates with corner angle $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $120^{\circ}$ are compared in order to study the effect of corner shape on vortex formation. In all cases, the self-induction of the starting vortex and its interaction with the potential flow induced by the moving plate cause the vortex to change its form dynamically after the plate starts to translate. While the vortex near a corner follows the plate in the low corner angle of $60^{\circ}$, the vortex separates early from the plate and its forward motion becomes slow in the high corner angle of $120^{\circ}$. It is also found that the starting vortex can transport inward at the corner, which depends on the corner angle.

  • Surface depression in the arc welding is calculated numerically to analyze its influence on pool convection and oscillation. The magnitude of surface depression due to arc pressure on the stationary GTA pool surface is relatively small, and fluctuations of the surface and velocity are caused mainly by arc pressure. The inward flow on the surface due to the electromagnetic force and positive surface tension gradient acts to decrease surface depression. Surface depression appears to have minor effects on average flow velocity and thus pool geometry. Pool oscillation occurs due to surface vibration, and oscillation frequencies are affected mainly by the surface tension and pool width. The input parameters such as arc pressure and current have negligible effects on the oscillation frequency, and the surface tension gradient has limited effects. Since the oscillation frequency varies slightly according to penetration, pool oscillation for the partial penetration weld pool is applicable to monitor the pool width.

  • In this paper we investigate the properties of advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) in case that outflows carry away infalling matter with its angular momentum and energy. Positive Bernoulli number in ADAFs allow a fraction of the gas to be expelled in a form of outflows. The ADAFs are also unstable to convection. We present self-similar solutions for advection-dominated accretion flows in the presence of outflows from the accretion flows(ADIOS). The axisymmetric flow is treated in variables integrated over polar sections and the effects of outflows on the accretion flow are parameterized for possible configurations compatible with the one dimensional self-similar ADAF solution. We explicitly derive self-similar solutions of ADAFs in the presence of outflows and show that the strong outflows in the accretion flows result in a flatter density profile, which is similar to that of the convection-dominated accretion flows(CDAFs) in which convection transports the angular momentum inward and the energy outward. There two different versions of the ADAF model should show similar behaviors in X-ray spectrum to some extent. Even though the two models may show similar behaviors, they should be distinguishable due to different physical properties. We suggest that for a central object of which mass is known these two different accretion flow should have different X-ray flux value due to deficient matter in the wind model.

  • Natural convection heat transfer in an enclosure with an opening in the right veritcal wall and a heat source at the bottom surface is investigated using a holographic interferometric technique. The effects of the opening length, divider length attached to the top wall, and heater temperature on the temperature distribution are examined. The opening length as well as the divider length greatly affects the degree of inflow and outflow of air. In the case of small opening length, the opening doesnt affect much the upward warm air flow resulting in the symmetric temperature distribution .The upward flow in hindered by the divider resulting in the decrease of heat transfer from the heater region to the upper region. The longest divider shows the highest temperature in the lower region of enclosure. In the case of large opening length, the inward cold flow moves the upward flow to the left direction. Among the cases of different divider length, the case of H(sub)d=0.25H shows the highest temperature in the lower region of enclosure.

  • The dramatic increase in the depth of a weld bead penetration has been demonstrated by welding a stainless steel in GTA (Gas-Tungsten-Arc) process with activating flux which consists of oxides and halides. However, there is no commonly agreed mechanism fer the effect of flux on the process. In order to make clear the mechanism, each behavior of the arc md the weld pool in GTA process with activating flux is observed in comparison with a conventional GTA process. A constricted anode root is shown in GTA process with the activating flux, whereas a diffuse anode root is shown in the conventional process. These anode roots are related strongly to metal vapor from the weld pool and the metal vapor is also related to temperature distributions on the weld pool surface. Furthermore, it is suggested that a balance between the Marangoni force and the drag force of the cathode jet should dominate the direction of re-circulatory flow in the weld pool. The electromagnetic force encourages the inward re-circulatory flow due to the constricted anode root in the case with flux. The difference in flow direction in the weld pool changes the geometry or depth/width ratio of weld bead penetration.

  • In vascular smooth muscle, K+ channels, such as voltage-gated K+ channels (Kv), inward-rectifier K+ channels (Kir), and big-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels (BKCa), establish a hyperpolarized membrane potential and counterbalance the depolarizing vasoactive stimuli. Additionally, Kir mediates endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization and the active hyperemia response in various vessels, including the coronary artery. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) induces right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH), thereby elevating the risk of ischemia and right heart failure. Here, using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we compared Kv and Kir current densities (IKv and IKir) in the left (LCSMCs), right (RCSMCs), and septal branches of coronary smooth muscle cells (SCSMCs) from control and monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH rats exhibiting RVH. In control rats, (1) IKv was larger in RCSMCs than that in SCSMCs and LCSMCs, (2) IKv inactivation occurred at more negative voltages in SCSMCs than those in RCSMCs and LCSMCs, (3) IKir was smaller in SCSMCs than that in RCSMCs and LCSMCs, and (4) IBKCa did not differ between branches. Moreover, in PAH rats, IKir and IKv decreased in SCSMCs, but not in RCSMCs or LCSMCs, and IBKCa did not change in any of the branches. These results demonstrated that SCSMC-specific decreases in IKv and IKir occur in an MCT-induced PAH model, thereby offering insights into the potential pathophysiological implications of coronary blood flow regulation in right heart disease. Furthermore, the relatively smaller IKir in SCSMCs suggested a less effective vasodilatory response in the septal region to the moderate increase in extracellular K+ concentration under increased activity of the myocardium.

  • We sought to find out the mechanism of vascular relaxation by extracellular $K^+$ concentration $([K^+]_o)$ in the cerebral resistant arteriole from rabbit. Single cells were isolated from the cerebral resistant arteriole, and using voltage-clamp technique barium-sensitive $K^+$ currents were recorded, and their characteristics were observed. Afterwards, the changes in membrane potential and currents through the membrane caused by the change in $[K^+]_o$ was observed. In the smooth muscle cells of cerebral resistant arteriole, ion currents that are blocked by barium, 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), and tetraethylammonium (TEA) exist. Currents that were blocked by barium showed inward rectification. When the $[K^+]_o$ were 6, 20, 60, and 140 mM, the reversal potentials were $-82.7{\pm}1.0,\;-49.5{\pm}1.86,\;-26{\pm}1.14,\;-5.18{\pm}1.17$ mV, respectively, and these values were almost identical to the calculated $K^+$ equilibrium potential. The inhibition of barium-sensitive inward currents by barium depended on the membrane potential. At the membrane potentials of -140, -100, and -60 mV, $K_d$ values were 0.44, 1.19, and 4.82 ${\mu}M,$ respectively. When $[K^+]_o$ was elevatedfrom 6 mM to 15 mM, membrane potential hyperpolarized to -50 mV from -40 mV. Hyperpolarization by $K^+$ was inhibited by barium but not by ouabain. When the membrane potential was held at resting membrane potential and the $[K^+]_o$ was elevated from 6 mM to 15 mM, outward currents increased; when elevated to 25 mM, inward currents increased. Fixing the membrane potential at resting membrane potential and comparing the barium-sensitive outward currents at $[K^+]_o$ of 6 and 15 mM showed that the barium- sensitive outward current increased at 15 mM $K^+.$ From the above results the following were concluded. Barium-sensitive $K^+$?channel activity increased when $[K^+]_o$ is elevated and this leads to an increase in $K^+-outward$ current. Consequently, the membrane potential hyperpolarizes, leading to the relaxation of resistant arteries, and this is thought to contribute to an increase in the local blood flow of brain.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the interaction of vortices over a delta wing with leading edge extension(LEX) through the off-surface flow visualization and the 5-hole probe measurements of the wing wake region. Especially, the application of a new visualization technique is employed by ultrasonic humidifier water droplet and laser beam sheet. The results, both the off-surface visualization and the 5-hole probe, show that LEX tends to stabilize the vortices of the delta wing up to the high angle of attack even though the model is yawed. With increasing yaw, the windward leading edge vortex moves inward, and closer to the wing surface, while the leeward vortex moves outwards and away from the wing surface. The vortex interaction is promoted in the windward side, and is delayed in the leeward side.

  • Three dimensional numerical calculation carried out to investigate the eccentricity effect of intake valve on the in-cylinder flow fields for the intake stroke and the compression stroke. During the intake stroke, a corner vortex in the vicinity of the valve exit interacted strongly with a toroidal vortex in the case of axisymmetric valve. But a weak interaction between the corner vortex and the toroidal vortex occurred due to the eccentricity of the valve in the narrow region between valve and cylinder wall in the case of offset valve. During the compression stroke, it was found that a solid body rotation was maintained in the radial-circumferential plane in the case of axisymmetric valve. But a weak secondary vortex was formed in the radial-circumferntial plane in the case of offset valve, because of the interaction between swirl flows and inward flows towards cylinder axis. The calculated turbulence intensity presented a similar trend with the experiental results but, in spite of using the modified k-.epsilon. model, it was found that the qualitative difference between the numerical results and experimental results was large in the region where the velocity gradient is substantial.
