  • The use of Engineered Wood Systems (EWS), especially mass-timber, as a structural alternative or complement to steel and concrete is gaining interest and acceptance across different sectors of architecture, engineering, and construction, including in high-rise buildings. Focussing on the Australian context, this study examines the levels of adoption and barriers to using timber as a primary structural material in multi-storey buildings. Data collected from semi-structured interviews with stakeholders at the forefront of adoption in structural design, construction, and property development indicates that timber in multi-storey projects in Australia still faces industry-wide challenges. Designers' awareness and attitudes towards timber adoption are generally positive and suitable for flagship projects, including tall buildings, but for enduring and widespread impact, long-term investment in education within and outside the range of stakeholders already committed to promoting timber adoption is needed.

  • Given that most government contracts are based on a fiscal year, long-term continuing construction contracts require appropriate provisions as significant amounts of budget is supposed to be invested for several years. This study drew problems and improvements of the long-term continuing construction contracts by analyzing the contents of FGI and list of construction order. We found that a number of problems, such as the mismatch between laws and enforcement decrees, difference in calculating overheads due to the extension of construction period, many construction orders that are hard to see as budget efficiency and over investment in the final annual contract, were tangled up in the process. To solve the problems mentioned, we suggested several improvements as follows: (1) effect of total construction period and total amount should be guaranteed by a law, (2) it is suggested that the scope of long-term continuing construction contract is determined by a law, and (3) it should be clear about the calculation of overheads concerned with the extension of construction period as well as the estimation of construction period to prevent over investment in the final contract.

  • Architecture has been expressed a complexity of their civilization with evolving into a living spaces and a crystalloid of culture in the times. So, architecture is always a dramatic phenomenon related to architectural aesthetic and technical expression in harmony with social and cultural issues by the times. From this point of view, we can describe that architecture is one of an important mediators to analyze the integrated trend of time. Specially an expressed building envelop which is a matter of consequence in the architectural component is first visual factor including architectural meaning and historical back ground. Therefore, this study firstly starts an investment for discriminative characteristics of building envelop design in the times, then will take the comparative analysis related with modern age and contemporary age based on phases of the times. This research will give the chance to prepare of the pillar of future envelop design in the practical affairs and has simultaneously the chance to understand of inclusive envelop design methodology by the changes of the times.

  • As domestic construction investment has been gradually reduced, expanding overseas construction is one of the most important issues for Korean construction companies. Among these issues, strategies for overseas CM services have widely been discussed, because the CM services have features of high growth potential and value-added area when compared with other construction sectors. Therefore, recent efforts focus on further development in advanced CM capabilities and expansion to overseas market. However, there has been lack of quantitative research to investigate current status and future direction of CM industry. In this sense, this research investigated what CM has achieved for the past 17years (between 1997 and 2013) and what CM should accomplish for future strategies. The purpose of this research is to statistically analyze total of 2,983 CM service contracts over the past 17 years published in KISCON (Knowledge Information System of Construction Industry) in order to examine current status of CM industry in terms of market type, contract size, commodity type, and owner's type. Based on this research, it is expected to suggest for future strategies and development directions from the CM industry perspective that could provide quantitative analyses, improve current CM statistics systems and strengthen the competitiveness in international CM market.

  • In this study, the flow effect of warming and cooling in the air supply of a pit for air conditioning were evaluated in BS art museum. We simulated the flow temperature for a pit winter and summer seasons using computational fluid dynamics. Consequential, energy saving, energy saving costs and initial payback periods were calculated and the following conclusions were drawn. The warming effect of the winter increased by $18.1^{\circ}C$ and $0.2^{\circ}C/m$ and the cooling effect of the summer decreased by $6.1^{\circ}C$ and dropped to $0.07^{\circ}C/m$. Energy saving appeared to be 19.1 kW in the summer and 54.3 kW in winter. Energy saving costs ranged from 2,567,119 won/year to 5,134,238 won/year and at minimum, initial payback period for initial investment was 3.9 years. As a result, the air supply system using an existing pit without any burden on initial investment costs is believed to contribute to energy saving through warming and cooling of unutilized energy effects.

  • This study defines the Next Generation System(NGS) built by domestic financial businesses and classifies their architecture into two typical types according to the duration of the project and the relative cost of IT investment in the short term: the Big Bang approach and the Phase approach. Herein, we study the two approaches as alternatives in developing the Next Generation System, and derive the factors that are to be considered in the evaluation of the two alternatives for financial businesses. The set of standards for the choice between the two models are grouped into categories that constitute performance evaluation for IT - Cost, Performance and Risk. We drill down further into each category to second and third subordinate levels to derive detailed selection criteria. Based on the criteria drawn from the study, we conduct a survey with information system planners, IT managers and specialists at financial companies who are currently planning, developing or have completed a Next Generation System. Survey results are analyzed using the AHP methodology to compare and understand the different approach in the implementation of NGS for financial business.

  • As has been expected, economic factors are a major consideration in almost every decision in building design process. Assuming that improving a lighting system, existing or proposed, will reduce operating cost, what preliminary economic guidelines can be established to determine whether any proposed investment appears cost effective? In such a case a reasonable technique to compare system costs is by life-cycle costing. Stated simply, a life-cycle cost represents the total cost of a system over its entire life cycle, that is, the sum of first cost and all future costs. This paper aims to exemplify the benefit of daylighting in term of economic consideration. Four different electric lighting system designs are proposed and a lighting control system that is continuously operating according to the level of daylight in the space has been adapted. The accumulated performance of electric and daylighting is figured out to declare the effective depth of daylight in the space. The analysis on the saving amount of lighting energy due to daylight has been undertaken in answer to the question, that is, several projects are being considered, which is the most desirable from the cost-effectiveness viewpoint. The result shows clearly that although denser layout of lighting fixtures might be more effective to interface to the level of daylight ceaselessly changeable, its economic benefit may not meet the expected criterion the reason of increased initial investment and maintenance cost for the fixtures and control hardware.

  • Purpose: Quasi-steady state simulations have played a pivoting role to expand the user group of simulation to design engineers and architects in Korea. Initially they are introduced in the market as a building energy performance rating tool. In domestic practice, however, quasi-steady state simulations seem to be regarded as a de facto simulation only available for energy retrofit. Selection of ECMs and economic feasibility analysis are being decided through these tools, which implies that running these tools has become a norm step of the Investment-grade Audit. Method: This study aims at identifying issues and problems with the current practice via test cases, analyzing the reasons and opportunities, and then eventually suggesting proper uses of quasi-steady state and dynamic simulations. Result: The functionality of quasi-steady state simulations is more optimized to the rating. If they are to used for energy retrofits, their off-the-shelf functions also need to be expanded for customization and detailed reports. Yet their roles may be limited only to the go/no go decision; because their algorithms are still weak at precisely estimating energy and load savings that are required for making investment decisions compared to detailed simulations.
