Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Optimum PV/inverter Sizing Ratio for Grid-connected PV Systems: Application to Selected Algerian Locations

  • Conventional methodologies (empirical, analytical, numerical, hybrid, etc.) for sizing photovoltaic (PV) systems cannot be used when the relevant meteorological data are not available. To overcome this situation, modern methods based on artificial intelligence techniques have been developed for sizing the PV systems. In the present study, the optimum PV/inverter sizing ratio for grid-connected PV systems with orientation due south and inclination angles of $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ in selected Algerian locations was determined in terms of total system output using type-2 fuzzy logic. Because measured data for the locations chosen were not available, a year of synthetic hourly meteorological data for each location generated by the PVSYST software was used in the simulation.

  • In this paper, a novel new pulse power generator based on IGBT stacks is proposed for pulse power application. Proposed scheme consists of series connected 9 power stages to generate maximum 60kV output pulse and one series resonant power inverter to charge DC capacitor voltage. Each power stages are configured as 8 series connected power cells and each power cell generates up to 850VDC pulse. Finally pulse output voltage is applied using total 72 series connected IGBTs. The synchronization of gating signal is important for series operation of IGBTs. For gating signal synchronization, full bridge inverter and pulse transformer generates on-off signals of IGBT gating and specially designed gate power circuit was used. Proposed scheme has lots of advantages such as long lifecyle, compact size, flat topped pulse forming, small weight, protection for arc, high efficiency and flexibility to generate various kinds of pulse output.

  • Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) has become popular for industrial application, particularly for low medium drives due to the advantages of SRM over the other ac motors: SRM can be manufactured with low cost because it has a simple structure. But, asymmetric bridge converter that generally is used for driving requires two discrete switching devices and freewheeling diodes per phase, and cause the SRM drives to be complicated and to increase the cost of overall system. Therefore, this paper suggests a new type of 4-switch converter for SRM. 4-switch converter topology is studied to provide a possibility for the realization of low cost 3-phase SRM drive system. For effective utilization of the developed system, a new current control algorithm is designed and implemented to produce the desired dynamic performance. With the developed power conversion circuit and control scheme, it is expected that the proposed system can be widely used in commercial applications with reduced system cost.

  • Gas turbine systems are applied extensively in energy supplies to cover peak load requirements. The gas turboset must be accelerated by starting device up to 60%~80% of rated speed to ignite the gas turbine. Recently, the most favorable and economical starting device is the LCI(Load Commutated Inverter). The LCI runs up the gas turboset by feeding the generator as a synchronous motor. In this paper, we discuss in detail the driving principles and features of 183MW gas turbine system. During field application of LCI system, many tests have been conducted and the results were described in this paper. The test results will be considered as the important resources for development in future.

  • In this paper, a simple power control scheme of Class-D inverter, which is varied duty cycle of fixed frequency to desired output power. It is more suitable and acceptable for high-frequency induction heating (IH) jar applications. The proposed control scheme has the advantages of not only wide power regulation range but also ease to control output power. Also it can achieve the stable and efficient Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) in whole load range. The control principles of proposed method are described in detail and its validity is verified trough simulations results on 38.5kHz IGBT for induction heating rated on 1.6kW with constant frequency variable power.

  • Recent trend of increasing automated factories needs supply of high quality power from the utilities. Among the items of the power quality, voltage sag can be compensated by Dynamic Voltage Restorer(DVR). The key feature of the DVR is high response with less transient period to recover from the voltage sag due to the lightning or line-to-ground faults. In this paper we report that $H_{\infty}$ controller is very promising for the practical application to the controller of DVR. Experimental results shown in this paper was obtained by applying the control algorithm to 20 kVA DVR system. The experimental set consists of IGBT-based three phase inverter and the TMS320C32-60 DSP used for main processor of the control board. To simulate the 50% voltage sag, the SCR-based experimental set was constructed.

  • In this paper, the RC filter for mitigating the output overvoltage of the 3-level 3300V 4MW inverter is described. The descriptions on power circuit and overvoltage phenomena are presented. The output transformer which may be used to obtain the higher output voltage, makes the filter design difficult because the parameter measurements are not easy and the accuracy may be poor. So, this paper presents several preliminary results on the output overvoltage with or without transformer to investigate the overall system characteristics. Some experimental results are also provided when the designed filter is applied.

  • A novel single-phase induction machine drive containing full bridge inverter is presented. The drive is intended for conveyor system or a similar type of application requiring variable-speed operation with a fan-type load characteristic. An experimental drive based on the proposed setup has been built to verify its practical viability. The paper presents the results obtained from an investigation and discusses the properties and characteristics of the drive for the entire speed range from 0 to 60Hz.

  • This paper presents a current-source-inverter based on a buck-boost configuration and its application for residential photovoltaic system. The proposed circuit has five switches. Among them, only one switch acts as chopping, and the other determine the polarity of output; therefore, it can reduce the switching loss. Because the input inductor current is operated on the discontinuous conduction mode, high power factor can be achieved without additional input current controller, So the overall system shows a simple structure. The operational modes are analysed in depth, and then it was verified through the experimental results using a 150 [W] prototype equipped with digital signal processor TMS320F241.

  • Over the years, traditionally, six-switch three-phase inverters have been widely utilized for variable speed alternating current motor drives. Recently, some efforts have been made on the application of four-switch three phase inverter for uninterruptible power supply and variable speed drives. This is due to some advantages of the four-switch three phase inverter over the conventional six-switch three-phase inverters such as reduced price due to reduction in number of switches, reduced switching losses, reduced number of interface circuits to supply logic signals for the switches, simpler control algorithms to generate logic signals, less chances of destroying the switches due to lesser interaction among switches, and less real-time computational burden. However such as slow di/dt and speed limitation, are the inherent characteristics and main drawbacks of the four-switch configuration. Those problems can be overcome in conjugation with Voltage-doublers which has additional advantage, such as unity power factor correction.
