  • This study analyzes whether the network characteristics lead to differences in innovation performance between inventors, using the case of Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Company which have applied for the most patents in the electronics and automobile industries while showing significant differences in the degree of collaborative invention. The more inventors an inventor is connected with in the network, the higher innovation performance is achieved. While existing literature addressed intra- / interindustry, and intra- / inter- group spillovers at the organizational level, this study extends this discussion to the inventor level. This study newly introduces spillover pools from network components and then constructs spillover pools in three dimensions of the group, the industry, and the network component. The study analyzes the effects of each spillover pool on invention performance of an individual inventor and compares the effects between spillover pools. At the inventor level, the innovative effects of spillover pools were confirmed. The results of this study suggest that the inventor's network characteristics and spillover pools can be used to predict the inventor's innovation performance.

  • This study investigates the effect of high-skilled inventor emigration rate on growth rate of the country of origin (COO). Inventor emigrants represent the human capital that can generate highly innovative work. The social network they form spurs knowledge diffusion and technology transfer back to their COOs, which in turn affects innovation and growth in their home countries. We run dynamic panel estimation for 154 countries during 1990-2011, and empirically show that a positive and statistically significant effect exists for the interaction of inventor emigration and trade. The result indicates that the direct negative impact of the brain drain can be mitigated by the positive feedback effect generated by the high-skilled inventor emigrants abroad. When coupled with an active trade policy that reinforces growth, countries can partially recoup the direct effect of the human capital loss. We stress the importance of international trade for successful technology transfer to occur, and offer insights for policies that can utilize the benefits of the rich social network of their high-skilled emigrants.

  • In this paper we describe a development of a multi user game using 3D graphics and multicasting. First, we represent a virtual reality world by 3D graphics technology. Next, we use computer communication technology for the purpose of interaction among multi users. As a result, multi users share 3D graphics objects and play games. The goal of this paper is a development of a system that enables multi users to play games sharing a virtual world represented by 3D graphics. We use the OpenInventor library and C++ language for 3D graphics scene representation, and IP multicasting protocols for computer communication. The system allows to use Polhemus Fastrak 3D input device that recognizes the 3D position and 3D orientation. As an example we present a game that demonstrates the effect of piano concert by multi piano players who are distributed in a computer network.

  • One of the important factors among the smart farm factors is environmental measurement. This study tried to design an environmental measurement monitoring system through Bluetooth wireless communication with LoRa using the open source programs Arduino, App Inventor, and Node Red. This system consists of Arduino, LoRa shield, temperature and humidity sensor (SHT10), and carbon dioxide sensor (K30). The environmental measurement system is configured as a system that allows the sensor to collect environmental data and transmit it to the user through wireless communication to conveniently monitor the farm environment. As libraries used in the Arduino program, LoRa.h, Sensirion.h, LiquidCrystal_I2C.h and K30_I2C.h were used. When receiving environmental data from the sensor at regular intervals, coding using average value was used for data stabilization. An Android-based app was developed using Node Red and App Inventor program as the user interface. It can be seen that the environmental data for the sensor is well collected with the screen output to the serial screen of Arduino, the screen of the smartphone, and the user interface of Node Red. Through these open source-based platforms and programs will be applied to various agricultural applications.

  • Although the number of patent which is one of the core outputs of technological innovation continues to increase, the number of low-value patents also hugely increased. Therefore, efficient evaluation of patents has become important. Estimation of patent lifespan which represents private value of a patent, has been studied for a long time, but in most cases it relied on a linear model. Even if machine learning methods were used, interpretation or explanation of the relationship between explanatory variables and patent lifespan was insufficient. In this study, patent lifespan (number of renewals) is predicted based on the idea that patent lifespan represents the value of the patent. For the research, 4,033,414 patents applied between 1996 and 2017 and finally granted were collected from USPTO (US Patent and Trademark Office). To predict the patent lifespan, we use variables that can reflect the characteristics of the patent, the patent owner's characteristics, and the inventor's characteristics. We build four different models (Ridge Regression, Random Forest, Feed Forward Neural Network, Gradient Boosting Models) and perform hyperparameter tuning through 5-fold Cross Validation. Then, the performance of the generated models are evaluated, and the relative importance of predictors is also presented. In addition, based on the Gradient Boosting Model which have excellent performance, Accumulated Local Effects Plot is presented to visualize the relationship between predictors and patent lifespan. Finally, we apply Kernal SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) to present the evaluation reason of individual patents, and discuss applicability to the patent evaluation system. This study has academic significance in that it cumulatively contributes to the existing patent life estimation research and supplements the limitations of existing patent life estimation studies based on linearity. It is academically meaningful that this study contributes cumulatively to the existing studies which estimate patent lifespan, and that it supplements the limitations of linear models. Also, it is practically meaningful to suggest a method for deriving the evaluation basis for individual patent value and examine the applicability to patent evaluation systems.
