Purpose: A fully digital approach to oral prosthodontic rehabilitation requires the possibility of combining (i.e., registering) digital documentation from different sources. This becomes more complex in an edentulous jaw, as fixed dental markers to perform reliable registration are lacking. This validation study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of 1) intraoral scanning and 2) soft tissue-based registration of an intraoral scan with a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan for a fully edentulous upper jaw. Materials and Methods: Two observers independently performed intraoral scans of the upper jaw in 14 fully edentulous patients. The palatal vault of both surface models was aligned, and the inter-observer variability was assessed by calculating the mean inter-surface distance at the level of the alveolar crest. Additionally, a CBCT scan of all patients was obtained and a soft tissue surface model was generated using patient-specific gray values. This CBCT soft tissue model was registered with the intraoral scans of both observers, and the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC) was calculated to evaluate the reproducibility of the registration method. Results: The mean inter-observer deviation when performing an intraoral scan of the fully edentulous upper jaw was 0.10±0.09 mm. The inter-observer agreement for the soft tissue-based registration method was excellent(ICC=0.94; 95% confidence interval, 0.81-0.98). Conclusion: Even when teeth are lacking, intraoral scanning of the jaw and soft tissue-based registration of an intraoral scan with a CBCT scan can be performed with a high degree of precision.

PURPOSE. This study aimed to investigate whether the accuracy of intraoral scanners is influenced by different scanning strategies in an in vitro setting, through a systematic review and meta-analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. This review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 standard. The following PICOS approach was used: population, tooth impressions; intervention, the use of intraoral scanners with scanning strategies different from the manufacturer's instructions; control, the use of intraoral scanners following the manufacturers' requirements; outcome, accuracy of intraoral scanners; type of studies, in vitro. A comprehensive literature search was conducted across various databases including Embase, SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The inclusion criteria were based on in vitro studies that reported the accuracy of digital impressions using intraoral scanners. Analysis was performed using Review Manager software (version 5.3.5; Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). Global comparisons were made using a standardized mean difference based on random-effect models, with a significance level of α = 0.05. RESULTS. The meta-analysis included 15 articles. Digital impression accuracy significantly improved under dry conditions (P < 0.001). Moreover, trueness and precision were enhanced when artificial landmarks were used (P ≤ 0.02) and when an S-shaped pattern was followed (P ≤ 0.01). However, the type of light used did not have a significant impact on the accuracy of the digital intraoral scanners (P ≥ 0.16). CONCLUSION. The accuracy of digital intraoral scanners can be enhanced by employing scanning processes using artificial landmarks and digital impressions under dry conditions.

This paper proposes a framework to automatically align Dental range image captured by depth sensors like the Microsoft Kinect. Aligning dental images by intraoral scanning technology is a difficult problem for applications requiring accurate model of dental-scan datasets with efficiency in computation time. The most important thing in dental scanning system is accuracy of the dental prosthesis. Previous approaches in intraoral scanning uses a Z-buffer ICP algorithm for fast registration, but it is relatively not accurate and it may cause cumulative errors. This paper proposes additional Alignment using the rough result comes after intraoral scanning alignment. It requires that Each Depth Image of the total set shares some overlap with at least one other Depth image. This research implements the automatically additional alignment system that aligns all depth images into Completed model by computing a network of pairwise registrations. The order of the each individual transformation is derived from a global network and AABB box overlap detection methods.

PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to evaluate the appropriate impression technique by analyzing the superimposition of 3D digital model for evaluating accuracy of conventional impression technique and digital impression. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-four patients who had no periodontitis or temporomandibular joint disease were selected for analysis. As a reference model, digital impressions with a digital impression system were performed. As a test models, for conventional impression dual-arch and full-arch, impression techniques utilizing addition type polyvinylsiloxane for fabrication of cast were applied. 3D laser scanner is used for scanning the cast. Each 3 pairs for 25 STL datasets were imported into the inspection software. The three-dimensional differences were illustrated in a color-coded map. For three-dimensional quantitative analysis, 4 specified contact locations(buccal and lingual cusps of second premolar and molar) were established. For two-dimensional quantitative analysis, the sectioning from buccal cusp to lingual cusp of second premolar and molar were acquired depending on the tooth axis. RESULTS. In color-coded map, the biggest difference between intraoral scanning and dual-arch impression was seen (P<.05). In three-dimensional analysis, the biggest difference was seen between intraoral scanning and dual-arch impression and the smallest difference was seen between dual-arch and full-arch impression. CONCLUSION. The two- and three-dimensional deviations between intraoral scanner and dual-arch impression was bigger than full-arch and dual-arch impression (P<.05). The second premolar showed significantly bigger three-dimensional deviations than the second molar in the three-dimensional deviations (P>.05).

최근 치과 인상 채득법은 인상재를 사용하는 전통적 방법에서 구내스캐닝을 이용한 디지털 인상방법으로 빠르게 발전하고 있다. 현재 치과시장에는 적어도 10개 이상의 구내스캐너가 있다. 하지만 기술과 디자인이 빠르게 발전하는 가운데 다양한 제품들 중 사용자가 합리적인 선택을 할 수 있는 기준이 명확하지 않다. 이 문헌고찰에서는 다양한 인체공학적 디자인 관련 논문을 토대로 한 근거자료를 통하여 사용자의 입장에서 가장 사용이 편리하고 알맞은 인체공학적 디자인을 제안하고자 한다. 이를 통하여 구내스캐너의 인체공학적 디자인의 중요성을 한번 더 확인하고 알맞은 인체공학적 구내스캐너의 제시를 통하여 사용자(치과의사)들의 근골격의 질환과 장애를 예방하고자 한다.

With the development of digital dentistry, various intra-oral scanners which acquire intraoral image without conventional impression taking and stone pouring steps have been introduced. Fixed dental prostheses such as inlay, onlay, crown, and bridge fabricated by CAD/CAM technique combined with digital impressions is getting popular due to the recent rapid progress of digital impression taking system. In comparison with traditional prosthetic procedure, the advantages of intraoral image acquiring and CAD/CAM technique are as follows; the omission of conventional impression materials, reduced workflow step, and increased efficiency by online communication with clinic and laboratory. This review article covers some opinions about the suitable scanning procedures for the various prosthodontic treatments and the utilization of digital intraoral scanner and CAD/CAM system.

This case report presents results for gingival recession coverage following gingival grafting and for gingival biotype enhancements by visualizing soft tissue volume changes using intraoral three-dimensional scanning. A 28 year old female patient with multiple gingival recessions and a 19 year old female patient with a single gingival recession on mandibular anterior area were treated. Root coverage was performed in both cases using autogenous subepithelial connective tissue harvested from palate. Intraoral 3D scan data were obatained presurgery and at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years postsurgery. The recession areas were recovered successfully by subepithelial connective tissue graft combined with pedicle flap repositioning, and the patients showed neither further recurrence nor post-operative complication. Soft tissue biotype changes were identified by superimposing and analyzing scan data, revealing that gingival biotype was enhanced in both cases. These cases suggest that SCTG could be advantageous in terms of the gingival biotype enhancement, as well as gingival recession coverage, and intraoral 3D scanning might be suitable for assessing post-surgical gingival biotype change.

컴퓨터 지원 설계 제조 기술(CAD/CAM)의 발전에 따라, 완전한 디지털 워크플로우를 구현하기 위한 첫번째 단계인 구내스캐너의 중요성이 높아지기 시작했다. CAD/CAM 이중스캔 기술은 임시 수복물의 외형을 복제하여 최종 수복물에 반영하도록 하는 방법이다. 이 증례에서는 비심미적인 전치부, 중증도의 마모, 수직 고경의 감소를 보이는 67세 남성을 치관 연장술과 수직고경 회복을 동반한 완전구강회복을 통해 치료했다. 임시 수복물은 구내스캐너와 CAD/CAM 이중스캔을 이용해 제작되었다. 적응 기간 후, 최종 단일 구조 지르코니아 수복물을 CAD/CAM 이중스캔을 이용해 임시 수복물을 반영해 제작되었다.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the marginal and internal gap of wax copings fabricated from extraoral scanning with intraoral scanning. Methods: Fifteen study models(abutment of teeth 16) were made by PMMA. STL files of thirty abutment were prepared by intraoral scanning with extraoral scanning. Wax copings of thirty fabricated using CAD/CAM system. Marginal and internal gap of wax copings of thirty were measured by silicone replica technique and digital microscope(${\times}140$). Date were analyzed by using independent samples t-test. Results: Mean (SD) of two group were measured $55.61(27.42){\mu}m$ for totally gap of ES group and $60.67(33.14){\mu}m$ for totally gap of IS group. But marginal and internal gap of two group were not differences statistically significant(p>0.05). Conclusion: Evaluation of marginal and internal gap of two group showed that no differences statistically significant and clinically acceptable results.

PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess whether scanning strategies of virtual interocclusal record (VIR) affect the accuracy of VIR during intraoral scanning. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Five pairs of reference cubes were added to the digital upper and lower dentitions of a volunteer, which were printed into resin casts. Subsequently, the resin casts were articulated in the maximal intercuspal position in a mechanical articulator and scanned with an industrial computed tomography system, of which the VIR was served as a reference VIR. The investigated VIR of the upper and lower jaws of the resin master cast were recorded with an intraoral scanner according to 9 designed scanning strategies. Then, the deviation between the investigated VIRs and reference VIR were analyzed, which were measured by the deviation of the distances of six selected reference points on the upper reference cubes in each digital cast to the XY-plane between the investigated VIRs and reference VIR. RESULTS. For the deviation in the right posterior dentitions, RP group (only scanning of right posterior dentitions) showed the smallest deviation. Besides, BP group (scanning of bilateral posterior dentitions) showed the smallest deviation in the left posterior dentitions. Moreover, LP group (scanning of left posterior dentitions) showed the smallest deviation in the anterior dentitions. For the deviation of full dental arches, BP group showed the smallest deviation. CONCLUSION. Different scanning strategies of VIR can influence the accuracy of alignment of virtual dental casts. Appropriate scanning strategies of VIR should be selected for different regions of interest and edentulous situations.
