In this paper, we propose a novel hardware architecture for an intra-prediction, integer transform, quantization, inverse integer transform, inverse quantization, and mode decision module for the macroblock engine of a new video coding standard, H.264. To reduce the cycle of intra prediction, transform/quantization, and inverse quantization/inverse transform of H.264, a reduction method for cycle overhead in the case of I16MB mode is proposed. This method can process one macroblock for 927 cycles for all cases of macroblock type by processing $4{\times}4$ Hadamard transform and quantization during $16{\times}16$ prediction. This module was designed using Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) and operates with a 54 MHz clock using the Hynix $0.35 {\mu}m$ TLM (triple layer metal) library.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) enables significantly improved compression performance relative to existing standards. However, the advance also requires high computational complexity. To accelerate the intra prediction mode decision, a minimum risk Bayesian classification framework is introduced. The classifier selects a small number of candidate modes to be evaluated by a rate-distortion optimization process using the sum of absolute Hadamard transformed difference (SATD). Moreover, the proposed method provides a loss factor that is a good trade-off model between computational complexity and coding efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a 31.54% average reduction in the encoding run time with a negligible coding loss of 0.93% BD-rate relative to HEVC test model 16.6 for the Intra_Main common test condition.
H.264/AVC enhances inter-frame coding performance adopting new intra and inter mode prediction in inter-frame motion prediction. H.264 encoder provides performance superior to existing standards with the prediction modes. Instead of enhanced performance, however, both predictions increase complexity of encoder and demand a lot of coding time. This paper proposes a method using local statistics of resultant intra mode, my and mode map to predict inter mode. There are relationship between intra and inter mode, and we can predict inter mode using neighboring macroblocks' resultant mode and motion vector according to the contents of frame. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces encoding time by 31% on average with a negligible loss of PSNR and bitrate.
Many new techniques have been adopted in HEVC (High efficiency video coding) standard, such as quadtree-structured coding unit (CU), prediction unit (PU) partition, 35 intra-mode, and so on. To reduce computational complexity, the paper proposes two optimization algorithms which include fast CU depth range decision and fast PU partition mode decision. Firstly, depth range of CU is predicted according to spatial-temporal correlation. Secondly, we utilize the depth difference between the current CU and CU corresponding to the same position of adjacent frame for PU mode range selection. The number of traversal candidate modes is reduced. The experiment result shows the proposed algorithm obtains a lot of time reducing, and the loss of coding efficiency is inappreciable.

Intra prediction is one of the significant techniques in H.264/AVC reference software; however, it has heavy computational complexity. In order to solve this problem, many fast algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a fast intra mode decision algorithm which predicts the edge direction of the current block using sub-sampled pixels to reduce high computational complexity of the H.264/AVC encoder. The proposed algorithm shows that it not only improves the coding performance but also reduces the computational complexity of the H.264/AVC encoder compared to previous algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the encoding time reduction of 75.93% on an average with slight peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) drop and bit-rate increment.

Since the high quality digital TV systems are broadly deployed in the market, the digital video contents will be edited and distributed in MPEG-2 MP@HL fonnat. Due to its impressive coding efficiency, the H.264/AVC codec has rapidly replaced the MPEG-4 SP codec for mobile digital video terminal with low quality. For the bro ad distribution of digitial video contents produced in MPEG-2 format, the MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC transcoding is highly necessary nowadays. In this paper, we propose a fast intra MB prediction mode decision method to reduce the computational complexity in the transcoding, which is the main bottleneck in the transcoders. The proposed method is based on the several relationships such as DCT coefficients and edge orientation, correlation between prediction directions in the $Intra16{\times}16$ and $Intra4{\times}4$ modes, correlation between edge-orientations of luminance an d chrominance components. The simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity upto 70% and 40%, compared with the cascaded transcoder and the well-known fast intraframe transc oder, respectively.
The RDO (Rate Distortion Optimization) process of HEVC results in good coding efficiency, but relatively requires much encoding time. In order to reduce the encoding time of RDO process, this paper proposes a method of fast intra prediction mode decision using DCT coefficients distributions and the existence of DCT coefficients. The proposed fast Intra coding sets the number of intra prediction mode candidates to three(3) from the RMD (Rough Mode Decision) process in HM16.0 reference SW and reduces the number of candidates one more time by investigating DCT coefficients distribution. After that, if there exists a quantized DCT block having all zero coefficient values for a specific candidate before the RDO process, the candidate is chosen without the RDO process. The proposed method reduces the encoder complexity on average 46%, while the coding efficiency is 2.1% decreased compared with the HEVC encoder.

The intra prediction and the motion estimation of inter prediction occupy 70 ~ 80% of whole compression time in H.264/AVC. Compression efficiency has been higher, but complexity has increased and coding time has also increased much more. This paper proposes a block size decision method of the intra prediction and mode decision method which minimize the loss of video quality during the encoding and shorten the time spent. This paper, in addition, proposes an algorithm which determines the method of adaptive block mode for motion estimation of inter prediction. We investigated PSNR and the intra prediction and inter prediction of time-consuming calculations in order to measure video quality degradation and complexity through experiments. Consequently, when you use all three methods, these methods showed that average coding time is shortened as about 500 to 600ms in every frame in the case of all experimented videos, keeping video quality nearly similar, compared with existing methods of H.264.
To expedite UHD (Ultra High Definition) video service, the HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) technology has recently been standardized and it achieves two times higher compression efficiency than the conventional H.264/AVC. To obtain the improved efficiency, however, it employs many complex methods which need complicated calculation, thereby resulting in a significantly increased computational complexity when compared to that of H.264/AVC. For example, to improve the coding efficiency of intra frame coding, up to 35 intra prediction modes are defined in HEVC, but this results in an increased encoding time than the H.264/AVC. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode decision scheme which reduces computational complexity by changing the number of intra prediction mode in accordance with the percentage of PU sizes for a given video resolution, and by classifying the 35 intra prediction modes into 4 categories considering video resolution and quantization parameter. The experimental results show that the total encoding time is reduced by about 7% on average at the cost of only 2% increase in BD-rate.
The H.264/AVC standard achieves higher coding efficiency than previous video coding standards with the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique which selects the best coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock. As a result, the complexity of the encoder have been significantly increased. In this paper, a fast intra-mode decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational load of intra-mode search, which is based on the inverse tree-structure edge prediction algorithm. First, we obtained the dominant edge for each $4{\times}4$ block from local edge information, then the RDO process is only performed by the mode which corresponds to dominant edge direction. Then, for the $8{\times}8$ (or $16{\times}16$) block stage, the dominant edge is calculated from its four $4{\times}4$ (or $16{\times}16$) blocks' dominant edges without additional calculation and the RDO process is also performed by the mode which is related to dominant edge direction. Experimental results show that proposed scheme can significantly improve the speed of the intra prediction with a negligible loss in the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and a little increase of bits.
