  • 오늘날 컴퓨터와 데이터 통신의 급속한 발달로 인해 멀티미디어 정보통신 기술이 비약적으로 발전하고 있다 .이러한 멀티미디어 데이터 중에서 동영상은 다른 데이터 형태에 비해 정보량이 매우 방대하다. 따라서 동영상을 처리하는 시스템에서는 압축 기법이 매우 중요한 역할을 차지한다. 이에 본 논문은 H.264 Intra예측을 기반으로 고속의 움직임 탐색 모드를 미리 결정하여 최적의 움직임 탐색 모드로 움직임 예측을 시행하였고, 기존의 4$^*$4, 8$^*$8, 16$^*$16 완전블록 탐색방식과 비교 평가하였다. 뿐만 아니라 이후 이를 바탕으로 움직임 예측 모듈을 VHDL로 구현한 후 성능평가의 기준으로 이용할 것이다.

Rate Distortion Improved Mode Decision Method for H.264 Intra Coding (H.264 인트라 프레임의 Rate Distortion 성능 향상을 위한 모드 결정 기법)

  • In this paper, we present a improved rate distortion optimization (RDO) for H.264 intra coding. By using new mode decision criteria pass for $I4{\times}4$ in company with the original RDO, the proposed method can achieve the better coding efficiency comparing with the original RDO. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can archive about $0.64{\sim}1.6578%$ bit rate decrease at the same PSNR and $0.049{\sim}0.101dB$ PSNR increase at the same bit rate.

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which has been developing as a next generation video coding standard, has adopted various techniques to achieve more than twice the compression performance of HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). The recently released VVC Test Model (VTM) shows 38% Bjontegaard Delta bitrate (BD-rate) improvement and 9x/1.6x encoding/decoding complexity over HEVC. In order to reduce such increased complexity, various fast algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, gradient-based methods of fast intra mode decision and block splitting are presented. Experimental results show that, compared to VTM6.0, the proposed method gives up to 65% encoding time reduction with 3.54% BD-rate loss in All-Intra (AI) configuration.

  • Korea DMB Service is popularized, and is used by many users. But latest display devices compared to the DMB content resolution support higher resolution and a variety of video resampling technologies has been used. Generally, subjective video quality is determined by object recognition rate in video, and increased as the edge space between objects are more clear. An edge is the boundary between an object and the background, and indicates the boundary between overlapping objects. the predicted direction in intra prediction used in H.264/AVC has the similarity up to 80% for the edge information. In the study, we propose an effective up-sampling mothed using the edge information that is extracted for the relationship between the intra prediction data and the DCT coefficient data of H.264 video encoding.

  • HEVC is the next compression standard and is expected to be used widely replacing the conventional H.264/AVC standard. The compression ratio of the HEVC is twice times than H.264/AVC, whereas its computational complexity is increased by up to 40%. Many research efforts have been made to reduce the computational complexity and to speed up encoding. For intra coding, the rough mode decision (RMD) is commonly applied. The rate-distortion optimization (RDO) process to decide the best mode is too complex so that RMD chooses the candidate modes with a simple process and sends the candidates to RDO process. However, for large-size blocks, the RMD also requires considerable computations. In this paper, a down-sampling scheme is proposed for the RMD process. The reference pixel loading, predicted pixel generation are performed using the down-sampled pixel data. When the proposed scheme is applied to the RMD, the computational complexity is reduced by 70% with a marginal bitrate increase of 0.04%. In terms of area of hardware-based RMD, the gate count and the buffer size is reduced 33% and 66%, respectively.

  • H.264/AVC의 인트라 예측에서 미리 현재 블록 내의 정보 및 이전 블록의 예측 모드 정보 등을 이용하여 현재 블록의 예측 부호화 블록 크기가 결정되었을 경우, 예측된 블록 크기에 적합한 예측 모드 결정이 요구된다. 이에 사전에 결정된 예측 블록 크기 정보와 주변 블록과의 화소 변화량을 계산하여 예측 모드를 결정하는 기법을 제안하고 성능을 평가한다.

  • HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) 보다 뛰어난 압축 성능을 갖는 차세대 비디오 부호화 표준 기술 탐색을 하고 있는 JVET(Joint Video Exploratory Team)에서는 기술 검증을 위한 참조 SW 코덱인 JEM(Joint Exploration Model)을 공개하고 있다. JEM 의 화면내 예측 부호화에서는 67 가지의 예측모드를 사용하고 6 개의 MPM(Most Probable Mode)을 이용하여 예측모드를 부호화 한다. 본 논문에서는 코딩블록에서의 화면내 예측모드의 선택 확률을 바탕으로 보다 효율적인 예측모드 부호화 기법을 제안한다. 실험결과 JEM 5.0 대비 MPM 을 포함한 예측모드 부호화 정보의 CABAC(Context Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) 엔트로피 부호화를 제외하고, AI(All Intra) 부호화 구조에서 0.23% 정도의 BD-rate 감소를 보임을 확일 할 수 있었다.

  • We propose a fast intra mode skip decision algorithm for H.264/AVC video encoding. Although newly added MB encoding algorithms based on various prediction methods increase compression ratio, they require a significant increase in the computational complexity because we calculate rate-distortion(RD) cost for all possible MB coding modes and then choose the best one. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision algorithm based on an adaptive motion vector map(AMVM) method for H.264/AVC video encoding to reduce the processing time for the inter frame. We verify that the proposed algorithm generates generally good performances in PSNR, bit rates, and processing time.

A Fast Intra Prediction Method Using Quadtree Structure and SATD in HEVC Encoder (쿼드트리 구조와 SATD를 이용한 HEVC 인코더의 고속 인트라 예측 방식)

  • This paper proposes a fast intra prediction method to reduce encoding time for the HEVC(high-efficiency video coding) encoder. The proposed fast Intra prediction method uses quadtree structure and SATD(Sum of Absolute Transformed Differences). In HEVC, a $8{\times}8$ SATD value using $8{\times}8$ hadamard transform is used to calculate a SATD value for $8{\times}8$ or larger blocks. The proposed method calculates the best SATD value by using each $8{\times}8$ SATD result in $16{\times}16$ or larger blocks. After that, the proposed method removes a candidate mode for RDO(Rate-Distortion Optimization) based on comparing SATD of the candidate mode and the best SATD. By removing candidate modes, the proposed method reduces the operation of RDO and reduces total encoding time. In $8{\times}8$ block, the proposed method uses additional $4{\times}4$ SATD to calculat the best SATD. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieved 5.08% reduction in encoding time compared to the HEVC test model 12.1 encoder with almost no loss in compression performance.

Fast Intraframe Coding for High Efficiency Video Coding

  • The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a new video coding standard that can provide much better compression efficiency than its predecessor H.264/AVC. However, it is computationally more intensive due to the use of flexible quadtree coding unit structure and more choices of prediction modes. In this paper, a fast intraframe coding scheme is proposed for HEVC. Firstly, a fast bottom-up pruning algorithm is designed to skip the mode decision process or reduce the candidate modes at larger block size coding unit. Then, a low complexity rough mode decision process is adopted to choose a small candidate set, followed by early DC and Planar mode decision and mode filtering to further reduce the number of candidate modes. The proposed method is evaluated by the HEVC reference software HM8.2. Averaging over 5 classes of HEVC test sequences, 41.39% encoding time saving is achieved with only 0.77% bitrate increase.
