  • We present a new algorithm for VLC table prediction in H.264 context-based adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC). Using both the correlation of coding modes and the statistics of the mode distribution in intra and inter frames, we can predict an appropriate VLC table of the given $4{\times}4$ block. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the bit rate about 0.97% on average, compared to the H.264/AVC standard.

  • The High efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard that achieves coding efficiency higher than previous video coding standards such as H.264/AVC. In intra prediction, the prediction units (PUs) are derived from a large coding unit (LCU) which is partitioned into smaller coding units (CUs) sizing from 8x8 to 64x64 in a quad-tree structure. As they are divided until having the minimum depth, Optimum CU splitting is selected in RDO (Rate Distortion Optimization) process. In this process, HEVC demands high computational complexity. In this paper, to reduce the complexity of HEVC, we propose a fast CU mode decision (FCDD) for intra prediction by using FAST (Features from Accelerated Segment Test) corner detection. The proposed method reduces computational complexity with 53.73% of the computational time for the intra prediction while coding performance degradation with 0.7% BDBR is small compared to conventional HEVC.

  • HEVC(High Efficient Video Coding) has twice times better compression ratio than H.264/AVC, but since the computational complexity has significantly increased in the encoder side, it may cause difficulty in real-time SW implementation in the encoder side. This paper proposes two methods about fast intra prediction. First, fast mode and prediction unit decision method using transform coefficients of the original block is proposed. and second, fast prediction unit decision method using coded block flag(cbf) is proposed. The proposed method achieves 42% encoder speed up with 0.8% bitrate increase compared with HM16.0.

  • Spherical videos, which are also called 360-degree videos, have become increasingly popular due to the rapid development of virtual reality technology. However, the large amount of data in such videos is a huge challenge for existing transmission system. To use the existing encode framework, it should be converted into a 2D image plane by using a specific projection format, e.g. the equi-rectangular projection (ERP) format. The existing high-efficiency video coding standard (HEVC) can effectively compress video content, but its enormous computational complexity makes the time spent on compressing high-frame-rate and high-resolution 360-degree videos disproportionate to the benefits of compression. Focusing on the ERP format characteristics of 360-degree videos, this work develops a fast decision algorithm for predicting the coding unit depth interval and adaptive mode decision for intra prediction mode. The algorithm makes full use of the video characteristics of the ERP format by dealing with pole and equatorial areas separately. It sets different reference blocks and determination conditions according to the degree of stretching, which can reduce the coding time while ensuring the quality. Compared with the original reference software HM-16.16, the proposed algorithm can reduce time consumption by 39.3% in the all-intra configuration, and the BD-rate increases by only 0.84%.

  • The H.264|AVC standard incorporates an intra prediction tool into inter frame coding. However, this leads to excessive amount of increase in encoding time, thus resulting in the difficulty in real-time implementation of software encoders. In this paper, we first propose an early decision on intra prediction coding and a fast intra prediction method using the characteristics of block contents and the context of neighboring block modes for the intra prediction in the inter frame coding of H.264/AVC. Basically, the proposed methods determine a skip condition on whether the $4{\times}4$ intra prediction is to be used in the inter frame coding by considering the content characteristics of each block to be encoded and the context of its neighboring blocks. The performance of our proposed methods is compared with the Joint Model reference software version 11.0 of H.264|AVC. The experimental results show that our proposed methods allow for 41.63% reduction in the total encoding time with negligible amounts of PSNR drops and bitrate increases, compared to the original Joint Model reference software version 11.0.

  • H.264/AVC is the newest video coding standard of ITU-T VCEG and the ISO/IEC MPEG, offering a significant performance improvement over previous video coding standards. However, the computational complexity of H.264/AVC is drastically increased because of new technologies such as intra prediction, variable block size, quarter-pels motion estimation/compensation, etc. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction scheme which has two step processing. The first step is a fast block size decision which can be calculated only in one block without considering all cases of $4{\times}4$ block and $16{\times}16$ block. The complexity of the intra prediction can be reduced by using boundary difference values of macroblock. After selecting the block size, we can make mode decision using the neighbouring reference pixels and representative pixels of the block in the second step. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm saved on the average 41.5% encoding time without any significant PSNR losses.

  • High efficiency video coding (HEVC) appears due to the demand on high compression video coding beyond H.264/AVC in ultra-high definition (UHD) videos. As for intra prediction, HEVC has 35 prediction modes while H.264/AVC has 9 intra modes. To exploit the spatial correlation, we adopt an edge detection method, establish the edge map, and adaptively select the candidate modes using the acquired edge information in a block. The number of the candidate modes is determined through trade-off between computational complexity and coding efficiency. Besides, the range of coding unit sizes is determined using the uniqueness of the edge directions for the given image block. As a result, we reduced the encoding time by 56.8% at the cost of 2.5% BD-BR increase on average compared to Full modes at the HEVC reference software (HM 6.0 [1]).

  • H.264/AVC is an authoritative international video coding standard which shows code and efficiency more improved than the existing video standards. Above all, the parameter block mode of H.264/AVC significantly contributes much to high compression efficiency. However, as the occasion demands, users tend to pass while overlooking the part that can produce a little higher compression efficiency. We, taking notice of this point, are designed to bring in much higher compression efficiency by gathering up the overlooked parts. This paper suggests the algorithm that produces efficient performance improvement by using the histogram of luminance in the pixel unit (Macroblock) of respective prediction block and applying specific thresholds. The experimental results proves that the technique proposed by this paper increases the compression efficiency of the existing H.264/AVC algorithm by 0.4% without any increase in the whole encoding time and PSNR complexity.

  • The existing rough mode decision (RMD) algorithm, used in HEVC standard loses the coding efficiency and wastes encoding time when encoding using transform skip mode (TSM) because the RMD algorithm in HEVC uses a selection method that is designed for DCT, not for TSM. This paper proposes a new RMD algorithm for TSM in HEVC. Our proposed RMD algorithm enhances the coding efficiency by employing a new cost function to increase the probability of selecting the best intra prediction mode for TSM. In addition, it reduces the encoding time by skipping the encoding process of least feasible TSM based on a newly proposed threshold value. The experiment results show that the proposed method achieves coding gains of -0.3% for screen contents with a 10% reduction in encoding time compared to those of the HEVC standard.

  • In this letter, a new intra-block coding mode is presented to improve the coding efficiency for band-limited signals. A band-limited block is sub-sampled, and the sub-sampled signal is coded on the basis of the conventional prediction/transform coding. The rest of the samples are reconstructed by interpolation at the decoder side without any side information. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves coding gains of 2.7% for common intermediate format (CIF), 4.29% for quarter CIF, and 6.39% for 720p60 sequences against the H.264/AVC JM10.2 reference software.
