  • The paper describes The Narrative Communication Model of Hope Seeking Intervention developed by the authors as an approach to help clients to have individually specific hope experiences. The Model is founded upon the existential conceptualization of hope that views hope as subjective, unique experiences of meaning and processes. The Model has been developed based on the findings both in the literature and the authors' work on the nature of hope and hope experiences and integrating the concept of hope as subjective meanings and experiences, the processes of story-telling and the concept of narrative configuration as a way to engage in person-specific experiences, and person-centered communication. The results of the experiences with the application of the model in a study are used to clarify the model further. The Model incorporating story-telling and narrative construction through person-centered communication is identified in three components-the story-telling, the narrative intervention, and the communication components. These components are processed as an intervention to culminate into person-specific hope experiences in which active participation of clients as the story-teller and of interventionist as the communicative facilitator is required to produce narratives of hope with individual specific thematic plots that become the basis for hope experiences. The application of the Model has shown positive outcomes in clients with successful seeking of own hope experiences. The success of the Model application seems to depend upon interventionists' understanding of the model and the competency with the application of person-centered communication strategies.

  • Background: The need to study music intervention for adolescents with severe developmental disabilities who engage in aggressive behavior. Purpose: This study aims to examine the researcher's experience in creating a music intervention environment when adolescents with severe developmental disabilities engage in aggressive behavior to avoid tasks. Method: Among the qualitative research methods, the researcher's experiences were explored through autoethnography. Collect a variety of empirical data on the research topic, the experience was analyzed according to the thematic analysis method of Braun and Clarke(2006). Results: As a result of data analysis, 31 codes, 9 sub-topics, and 3 super-topics were derived. Three superordinate themes were derived according to the nature of the environment: "Musical environment to reduce task resistance," "Physical environment that provides stability and comfort" and "Interpersonal environment with trust and warmth." Conclusion: In order to prevent and alleviate aggressive behavior in adolescents with severe developmental disabilities, it is important to create an environment tailored to them, so an ecological approach is necessary in music intervention. Although this is only a partial study, it provides information to therapists preparing for music intervention for adolescents with severe developmental disabilities and is meaningful as basic data on future intervention plans and coping strategies.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of the process of change, decision making, self-efficacy and perception of subjective health according to the stages of exercise behaviors suggested by transtheoretical models among older adults. Method: The subjects consisted of 291 older adults. Trained research assistants interviewed the older adults using structured questionnaires. ANOVA analyses with post hoc test were used to examine the mean differences for each stage of exercise behavior using SPSS for windows. Result: The subjects were divided into five stages of exercise behavior: 24.4% precontemplation, 12.4% contemplation, 17.9% preparation, 12.4% action, 33.0% maintenance stage. There were significant differences in process of change, decision making, self-efficacy and subjective health perception according to the exercise stage of change. 'Self-liberation' and 'stimulus control' were important strategies for intention of exercise, while 'reinforcing management' for the actual practice of exercise. 'Self-efficacy' was an effective strategy to change older adults from pre-contemplation to preparation stage. Conclusion: For exercise intervention, older adults should be classified into groups according to their stages of exercise behaviors and provided effective individualized intervention depending on their stage.

  • This study was done to compare the effects of managing obesity using a behavior modification program and an aerobic exercise in adolescent girls. Thirty three subjects were selected from one girls' middle school located in Seoul. Seventeen girls participated in the behavior modification program by joining 60-90 minute group sessions weekly. The aerobic exercise program was given to 16 girls three times per week for 60 minutes each. These iterventions continued for eight weeks from October 17 to December 10, 1995. The data were obtained before and after the interventions by measuring degree of obesity, body weight, blood pressure, serum lipid, %body fat, and waist to hip ratio(WHR). Data ware analysed by using paired t-test. The results are as follows. 1. Subjects in both the behavior modification and the aerobic exercise groups showed significant decrese in the degree of obesity, body weight, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, %body fat and fat mass after the 8-week interventions. 2. Systolic bood pressure, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and waist to hip ratio were significantly decreased after the 8-week intervention in the behavior modification program group while triglyceride was significantly decreased after the 8-week intervention in the aerobic exercise program group. These findings indicate that both behavior modification and aerobic exercise programs are good strategies for managing obesity among adolescent girls.

  • Vehicle Dynamics Control(VDC) has been a breakthrough and become a new terminology for the safety of a driver and improvement of vehicle handling. This paper examines the usefulness of a brake steer system (BSS), which uses differential brake forces for steering intervention in the context of VDC. In order to help the car to turn, a yaw moment can be achieved by altering the left/light and front/rear brake distribution. The steering function achieved through BSS can then be used to control lateral position in an unintended road departure system. A 8-DOF non-linear vehicle model including STI tire model will be validated using the equations of motion of the vehicle, and the non-linear vehicle dynamics. Since Fuzzy logic can consider the nonlinear effect of vehicle modeling, Fuzzy controller is designed to explore BSS feasibility, by modifying the brake distribution through the control of the yaw rate of the vehicle. The control strategies developed will be tested by simulation of a variety of situation; the possibility of VDC using BSS is verified in this paper.
