  • This study analyzed pore water pressure, seepage and leakage quantity, height of seepage and critical hydraulic gradient in order to suggest the seepage characteristics of agricultural reservoir embankment considering filter interval. The seepage characteristics of a deteriorated reservoir embankments were conducted according to the horizontal filter intervals range using three- dimensional finite element analysis. The wider the horizontal filter interval, the higher the pore water pressure increased, and the pore water pressure ratio in the center of the core has a greater effect than the base part. The seepage and leakage quantity appeared largely in the two-dimensional analysis conditions (case 1), where the filter was constructed totally in the longitudinal direction of the embankment, the wider the horizontal filter interval was gradually reduced. The reasonable filter intervals to yield efficient seepage characteristics were within 30 m for the pore water pressure of the core and the height of the seepage line. The stability of the filter installation was able to evaluate the stability of the piping by the critical hydraulic gradient method. The deteriorated reservoir with no filters or decreased functionality can significantly reduce the possibility of piping by simply installing a filter on the downstream slope. In the future, the deteriorated reservoir embankment should be checked for the reservoir remodeling because the core and filter functions have been lost or decreased significantly. In the case of a new installation, the seepage characteristic behavior due to the core and filter changes should be applied to the field after obtaining a reasonable horizontal filter interval that satisfies the safety factor by a three-dimensional analysis.

  • As the worst-case analysis for interval plants, a conjecture whether the supremum of the integral of square error(ISE) is attained at the extreme point such as vertices, Kharitonov vertices, CB segment, and edges is suggested. We present a sufficient condition for which the worst performance index occurs at one ofvertices of uncertain parameter space. Numerical examples are also given.

  • Interval-valued data, a type of symbolic data, is given as an interval in which the observation object is not a single value. It can also occur frequently in the process of aggregating large databases into a form that is easy to manage. Various regression methods for interval-valued data have been proposed relatively recently. In this paper, we introduce a nonparametric regression model using the kernel function and a nonlinear regression model for the interval-valued data. We also propose applying the local linear regression model, one of the nonparametric methods, to the interval-valued data. Simulations based on several distributions of the center point and the range are conducted using each of the methods presented in this paper. Various conditions confirm that the performance of the proposed local linear estimator is better than the others.

  • Interval censored data often occur in an observational study where the subject is followed periodically. Instead of observing an exact failure time, two inspection times that include it are available. There are several methods to analyze interval censored failure time data (Sun, 2006). However, in the presence of competing risks, few methods have been suggested to estimate covariate effect on interval censored competing risk data. A sub-distribution hazard model is a commonly used regression model because it has one-to-one correspondence with a cumulative incidence function. Alternatively, Klein and Andersen (2005) proposed a pseudo-value approach that directly uses the cumulative incidence function. In this paper, we consider an extension of the pseudo-value approach into the interval censored data to estimate regression coefficients. The pseudo-values generated from the estimated cumulative incidence function then become response variables in a generalized estimating equation. Simulation studies show that the suggested method performs well in several situations and an HIV-AIDS cohort study is analyzed as a real data example.

  • This paper presents a new test technique for evaluating performance of vehicle detectors with interval estimation, not the conventional point estimation, for presenting statistical confidence interval. The methodology is categorized into three parts; sampling plan, analysis on the characteristic of evaluation indices, and the expression of evaluation results. Even though many statistical sampling plans exist, stratified random sampling is regarded as the most appropriate one, considering the detector performance characteristics that varies with traffic, illumination, and meteorological conditions. No magic bullet exists for evaluation index for detector evaluation, hence the characteristics of evaluation indices were thoroughly analyzed and a reasonable process for choosing the best evaluation index is proposed. Finally, the methodology to express the result of detector evaluation for the entire evaluation period and individual analysis interval is represented, respectively. To overcome the existing drawbacks in point estimation, interval estimation by which statistical confidence interval can be represented is introduced for enhancing statistical reliability of traffic detector evaluation. This research can make vehicle detector scheme improve one step forward.

  • Bridge Control and Inspection ensures the safety, utility, and durability of Bridge in use. This Paper compares Control-interval of Germany with that of Korea, which was described in the special law recently revised concerning the Safety Checkup of Facilities, and analyzes Period of Damage Discovery that the Damage report of other countries showed. According to a result of the analysis, damage requiring structure repair and reinforcement more frequently been discovered even in less than a decade after the completion of construction. The paper, therefore, suggested the reregulation on the Korean Control Interval on the basis of the result.

  • By performing interval analysis on the system transfer function, we propose an improved method of control loop design for a DC/DC converter. In conventional design methods, the effect of system parameter change due to the specified range of operating conditions and production tolerances in power components should be checked a posteriori, because this may result in a transfer function shift and performance degradation. In the proposed method, a possible parameter change is considered a priori in the design step in order that the desired crossover frequency and sufficient phase margin can be achieved even in the worst case condition. As an illustrative example, a buck dc/dc converter is designed by two different methods and performance comparisons are performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

  • Probability precipitation is one of the most important factor for designing the hydrology structures. Probability precipitation is calculated based on the frequency analysis on each durations of annual maximum rainfall data. For frequency analysis we need a conversion factor between the rain data per random-time interval and fixed-time-interval. In this study, the minutely precipitation data on observatory of the Meteorological Administration are used for 37 stations. Therefore, we should conversion factors between the rain data per minute and fixed-time-interval.

  • Railway vehicle equipment goes back again to the state just before when failure by the repair. In repairable system, we are interested in the failure interval. As such, a statistical model of the point process, NHPP power law is often used for the reliability analysis of a repairable system. In order to derive a quantitative reliability value of repairable system, we analyze the failure data of the air brake system of the train line 7. The quantitative value is the failure intensity function that was modified, converted into a cost-rate function. Finally we studied the optimal number and optimal interval in which the costs to a minimum consumption point as cost-rate function. The minimum cost point was 194,613 (won/day) during the total life cycle of the braking system, then the optimal interval were 2,251days and the number of optimal preventive maintenance were 7 times. Additionally, we were compared to the cost of a currently fixed interval(4Y) and the optimum interval then the optimal interval is 3,853(won/day) consuming smaller. In addition, judging from the total life, "fixed interval" is smaller than 1,157 days as "optimal interval".

  • In this paper, we investigate a rekey mechanism for a secure multicast group communications and relate the mechanism to the loss of information from group key exposal. We also combine cost for the information loss and cost for group key updates and analyze the optimum rekey interval. Using the results of the analysis in this paper, we can manage a secure multicast group efficiently with the minimal cost on the bases of number of group members, each member's security level and withdrawal rates.
