  • WebDAV is a protocol to support collaboration among one or more groups in geographically distant locations through the internet. WebDAV extends the web communication protocol HTTP/1.1 to provide a standard infrastructure for .supporting asynchronous collaboration for various contents across the internet. A WebDAV client uses HTTP requests to perform a renewal and update action to the resources in WebDAY servers. So, it is desirable that the client supports the ability of authoring and version management with a good concurrency control and property management. In this paper, to enhance usability, we developed a .NET-based WebDAV client with a user interface similar to the Windows Explorer. The developed WebDAV client supports easy launching of the authoring application and appropriate lock control for the server resources. In addition, through the functionality of process monitoring, it supports automatic update of the server resources when the modification of the resources are completed by the user. The WebDAY client is a .NET-based application written in the C# language, running on any platform supporting a .NET framework.

  • The industrial environment for shipbuilding in 21st century requires increase in few type of ships and marine structures, international cooperation and globalization, while virtual enterprise environment is rapidly establishing. On the other hand, more and more efforts will be spent on internet based distributed and collaborative environment rather than being spent on unit level automations such as CAD, CAM and CAE, and the link between them. Recent internet technology and information technology in heterogeneous environment are being applied in shipbuilding industry as well as in other industries. While these technology are rapidly adopted in major shipyards, many small and medium-sized shipyards does not have enough resources to introduce system designed for large enterprise. In this paper, a prototype of Internet technology based basic planning system is implemented for the small and medium sized shipyards based on the internet technology and concurrent engineering concept. First, the system is designed from the user requirements. Then standardized development environment and tools are selected. These tools are used for defining and evaluating core application technologies for the system development. This can guarantee the survival of small and medium-sized shipyards in 21st century industrial environment.

  • This paper presents a real-time collaborative system for distributed design. The aim of the system is to provide designers with a virtual workspace where they can collaborate and exchange their design knowledge in distributed environment. The system consists of two subsequent modules. One is for the visualization of design data including CAD data, documents, images, and the other is real-time collaboration module. They make it possible for distributed designers to review the design data collaboratively and to share their design knowledge. The system was implemented by using the Internet protocols such as TCP/IP and IP multicast on the peer-to-peer based network. An example is presented and discussed to validate the proposed system.

  • Our experience with Internet-based scientific collaboratories indicates that they need to be user-extensible, allow users to add tools and objects dynamically to workspaces, per mit users to move work dynamically between private and shared workspaces, and be easily accessible on the Internet. We present the software architecture of a development environment, called Collaboratory Builder's Environment(CBE), for building collaboratories to meet such needs. CBE provides user extensibility by allowing a collaboratory to be constructed as a collection of collaborative applets. To support dynamic reconfiguration of shared workspaces, CBE uses the metaphor of room that can contain applets, users, and arbitrary data objects. Rooms can be used not only for synchronous collaboration but also for asynchronous collaboration by supporting persistence. For the access over the Internet room participants are given different roles with appropriate access rights. A prototype of the model has been implemented in Java and can be run from a Java-enabled Web browser. The implemented system had been used by 95 users including 79 space scientists around the world in a scientific campaign that ran for 4 days. The usage evaluation of the campaign is also presented.

  • The instability of social norms on the Internet causes the diversity of social identification. Meanwhile, the anonymity of online social identity and the chaos of the role-playing among the interacting participants cause an ambiguity of identity recognition, which intensifies anxiety about interpersonal interaction. Methods that promote face-to-face interpersonal interaction through the reconstruction of the identification to the social system and intergroup trust is worth further research. Based on a telephone survey of urban residents in thirty-six cities in China (N=1080), the study focuses on the influence of Internet use on interpersonal interaction of urban residents and the mediation effect of social identification. The results show that Internet use has a negative effect on the interpersonal interactions of urban residents, and social identification plays a mediating effect between Internet use and interpersonal interaction. Implications of the results are discussed.

  • This paper describes the development of a web-based interference verification system in the mold design process. Although several commercial CAD systems furnish interference verification functions, those systems are very expensive and inadequate to perform collaborative works over the Internet. In this paper, an efficient and precision hybrid interference verification algorithm for the web-based interference verification system over the distributed environment has been studied. The proposed system uses lightweight CAD files produced from the optimally transformed CAD data through ACIS kernel and InterOp. Collaborators related to the development of a new product are able to verify the interference verification over the Internet without commercial CAD systems. The system reduces production cost, errors and lead-time to the market. Validity of the developed system is confirmed through case studies.

  • Cloud computing is provided on demand service via the internet, allowing users to pay for the service they actually use. Categorized as one kind of cloud computing, SaaS is computing resource and software sharing model with can be accessed via the internet. Based on virtualization technology, SaaS is expected to improve the efficiency and quality of the IT service level and performance in company. Therefore this research limited cloud services to SaaS especially focused on collaborative application service, and attempts to identify the factors which impact the performance of collaboration and intention to use. This study adopts technological factors of cloud SaaS services and factors of task characteristics to explore the determinants of collaborative performance and intention to use. An experimental study using student subjects with Google Apps provided empirical validation for our proposed model. Based on 337 data collected from respondents, the major findings are following. First, the characteristics of cloud computing services such as collaboration support, service reliability, and ease of use have positive effects on perceived usefulness of collaborative application while accessability, service reliability, and ease to use have positive effects on intention to use. Second, task interdependence has a positive effects on collaborative performance while task ambiguity factor has not. Third, perceived usefulness of collaborative application have positive effects on intention to use.

  • Various personalized services are provided based on user context these days, and IoT(Internet of Things) devices provides effective ways to collect user context. For example, user's activity such as walking steps, calories, and sleeping hours can be collected using smart activity tracker. Smart scale can sense change of user's weight or body fat percentage. However, these services are independent to each other and not easy to make them collaborate. Many standard bodies are working on the documents for this issue, but due to diversity of IoT use case scenarios, it seems that multiple IoT technologies co-exist for the time being. This paper propose a framework to collaborate heterogeneous IoT services. The proposed framework provides methods to build application for heterogeneous IoT devices and user context management in more intuitive way using HTTP. To improve compatibility and usability, gathered user contexts are based on MPEG-UD. Implementation of framework and service with real-world devices are also presented.

  • A Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) consists of mobile nodes which co-operate to forward each other's packets without the presence of any centralized authority. Due to this lack of centralized monitoring authority, MANETs have become vulnerable to various kinds of routing misbehaviour. Sometimes, nodes exhibit non-cooperating behaviour for conserving their own resources and exploiting others' by relaying their traffic. A node may even drop packets of other nodes in the guise of forwarding them. This paper proposes an efficient Reputation and Collaboration technique through route-request for handling such misbehaving nodes. It lays emphasis not only on direct observation but also considers the opinion of other nodes about misbehaving nodes in the network. Unlike existing schemes which generate separate messages for spreading second-hand information in the network, nodes purvey their opinion through route-request packet. Simulation studies reveal that the proposed scheme significantly improves the network performance by efficiently handling the misbehaving nodes in the network.
