  • The internal broadband noise of a centrifugal fan in a household refrigerator is predicted by using hybrid CAA technique based on stochastic turbulent synthetic model. First, the unsteady flow field around the centrifugal fan is predicted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. Then, the turbulent flow field is synthesized by applying the stochastic turbulent synthetic technique to the predicted flow field. The aerodynamic noise sources of the centrifugal fan are modeled on a basis of the synthesized turbulent field. Finally, the broadband noise of the centrifugal fan is predicted using Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the modeled sources. The predicted result is compared with the experimental data. It is found that the predicted result closely follows the experimental data. The proposed method can be used as an effective tool for designing low-noise fans without expensive computational cost required generally for the LES and DNS simulations to resolve the turbulence flow field responsible for the broadband noise.

  • In recent years, work to improve the power of a tractor has been in development. This study, using the mid-PTO power of a compact tractor, attempted to develop a high-speed mid-mower by setting the rotation to more than 3,000 RPM designed/manufactured major components of the high speed mid-mower. The performance of high-speed mid-mower was evaluated by the precision of straight bevel gears, and durability, the noise of the gearbox, the gearbox internal temperature, the maximum rotation speed of the mid-mowers, and the grass cutting test. Through the performance test results, the maximum number of revolutions of the mid-mower was measured over 3,000RPM, the gearbox noise and gearbox internal temperature satisfied the performance requirements of a high speed mid-mower.

  • The Reactor internal structures which consist of many complex components are subjected to flow-induced vibration due to high temperature and pressure in Reactor coolant system. The above flow-induced vibration causes degradation of structural integrity of the Reactor and may result in loosing mechanical binding component which might impact other equipment and component or cause flow blockage. It is important to analyze reactor noise signal for the early detection of potential problem or failure in order to diagnosis reactor integrity in the point of view of safety and plant economics. • Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be a cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.

  • In order to improve the sound quality and reduce the noise of engines and vehicles efficiently, it is important to quantify the subjective noise characteristics objectively. The exhaust noises of the passenger vehicles have been measured for the subjective assessments. This paper outlines the objective data by which engine noise can be assessed and the salient features of subjective assessments before proposing an approach by which targets for internal vehicle noise may be set. The method to objectify the subjective assessments has been proposed considering three components - Loudness, Harmonic content, Impulsiveness - which have influence on the subjective assessments.

  • Internal aeroacoustics of an axial fan used for circulating cold air in refrigerators are computed by using the hybrid method where CFD, acoustic analogy and BEM techniques are utilized. The unsteady flow field around the axial fan is predicted by solving the incompressible RANS equations with the conventional CFD techniques. Then, main noise sources are extracted from this unsteady flow field predictions using Acoustic Analogy. Lastly, BPF noise generated from an axial fan are predicted using these modeled sources combined with the tailed Green function techniques, which are numerically solved by the BEM technique. This hybrid model is validated by comparing the prediction with the experiment. Then, parameter studies are carried out, which suggest a capability of the current method as a design tool for the low-noise of the current axial fan system in a refrigerator.

  • The cut-off is a unique feature associated with duct acoustics due to the presence of duct walls. Duct geometry effect on sound radiation is another issue of duct acoustics. The radiation of duct internal noise to ambient from duct open ends with various geometries is studied via numerical methods. The linearized Euler's equations in generalized curvilinear coordinates are solved by the DRP finite difference scheme. A number of accurate boundary conditions are used at boundaries for the computational domain to minimize the non-physical reflections. The far field sound pressure levels are computed by the Kirchhoff integration method. We investigate the cut off phenomana and duct geometry effects on sound radiation with numerical results.

  • This paper describes a design of a multi-bit oversampling noise-shaping D/A converter which achieves a resolution of 12 bits using oversampling technique. In the architecture the essential block which determines the whole accuracy is the analog internal D/A converter, and the designed charge-integration internal D/A converter adopts a differential structure in order to minimize the reduction of the resolution due to process variation. As the proposed circuit is driven by signal clocks which contains the information of the data variation from the noise-shaping coder, it minimizes the disadvantage of a charge-integration circuit in the time axis. In order to verify the circuit, it was integrated with the active area of 950$\times$650${\mu}m^{2}$ in a double metal 1.5-$\mu$m CMOS process, and testified that it can achieve a S/N ratio of 75 dB and a S/(N+D) ratio of 60 dB for the signal bandwidth of 9.6 kHz by the measurement with a spectrum analyzer.
