  • A simplified model of plastic layer and internal gas pressure In a coke oven is presented. We calculate internal gas pressure using presented model. And results are compared with calculated results using experimental data. Results show the difference of internal gas pressure by coal composition. The model is used to show that the permeability at the resolidification end of the plastic layer is a key determinant of the magnitude of the internal gas pressure.

  • In this paper, using the neural network design techniques, an adaptive Mahalanobis distance classifier(AMDC) is designed. This classifier has three layers: input layer, internal layer and output layer. The connection from input layer to internal layer is fully connected, and that from internal to output layer has partial connection that might be thought as an Oring. If two ormore clusters of patterns of one class are laid apart in the feature space, the network adaptively generate the internal nodes, whhch are corresponding to the subclusters of that class. The number of the output nodes in just same as the number of the classes to classify, on the other hand, the number of the internal nodes is defined by the number of the subclusters, and can be optimized by itself. Using the method of making the subclasses, the different patterns that are of the same class can easily be distinguished from other classes. If additional training is needed after the completion of the traning, the AMDC does not have to repeat the trainging that has already done. To test the performance of the AMDC, the experiments of classifying 500 Hangeuls were done. In experiment, 20 print font sets of Hangeul characters(10,000 cahracters) were used for training, and with 3 sets(1,500 characters), the AMDC was tested for various initial variance \ulcornerand threshold \ulcorner and compared with other statistical or neural classifiers.

  • Experimental and theoretical studies of internal cavity pressure during injection molding of a spiral tube cavity were carried out. The frozen layer thickness and the evolution of internal cavity pressure were calculated using a commercial software (C-MOLD). The evolution of the internal cavity pressure was recorded during injection molding of polystyrene into a spiral tube mold. To explain the differences observed between the calculated and measured internal cavity pressure, a pressure correction factor (PCF) was introduced based on the plane stress theory. This factor was determined by analyzing the stress state in the melt and calculating the frozen layer thickness near the mold wall. The corrected and experimental pressures have been compared to validate the applicability of the pressure correction factor.

  • The polarization and strain behavior of multilayer ceramic actuators fabricated by tape casting using a PNN-PZT ceramics were investigated in association with electrode size and internal layer number. Spontaneous polarization and strain decreased with increasing electrode size. In addition, the increase of internal layer number brought reduced spontaneous polarization and increased the field-induced strain. Because the actuators structure is designed to stack ceramic layer and electrode layer alternatively, the ceramic-electrode interfaces may act as a resistance to motion of domain wall. To analyze the effect of ceramic-electrode interface, the diffraction intensity ratio of (002) to (200) planes was calculated from X-ray diffraction patterns of samples subjected to a voltage of 200 V. The diffraction intensity ratio of (002) to (200) planes was decreased with increasing electrode size and internal layer number. The diffraction intensity ratio and straining behavior analyses indicate that the Polarization and strain were affected by the amount of 90°domain decreasing with increasing electrode size and internal layer number. Consequently, the change of polarization and displacement with respect to electrode size and layer number is likely to be caused by readiness of the domain wall movement around the interface.

  • Internal waves occur at the interface between two layers caused by a seawater density difference. The internal waves generated by a body moving in a two-layer fluid are also related to the generation of surface waves because of their interaction. In these complex flow phenomena, the experimental measurements and experimental set-up for the wave patterns of the internal waves and surface waves are very difficult to perform in a laboratory. Therefore, studies have mainly been carried out using numerical analysis. However, model tests are needed to evaluate the accuracy of numerical models. In this study, the various experimental conditions were evaluated using CFD simulations before experiments to measure the wave patterns of the internal waves and surface waves in a stratified two-layer fluid. The numerical simulation conditions included variations in the densities of the fluids, depth of the two-layer fluid, and moving speed of the underwater body.

  • The sea is stratified with water that has different densities because of pressure, temperature, and salinity. When conducting studies of internal waves in the ocean, the fluid is assumed to have layers that have discrete densities. This assumption is made because it is difficult to achieve layers that exhibit gradual changes in the density of the water. In this study, we used previous studies on ocean waves and their radiation issues in the density layer fluid to investigate the characteristics of internal waves in the ocean and their radiation patterns induced by a moving body in a stratified fluid. We also studied the difference in wave radiation between the density gradient layer and the discrete density layer. We found that the wave radiation patterns depended on the velocity of the moving body and the change in the density of the water. The crest apex shift phenomenon was observed in the density gradient in the layer of fluid.

  • In the study, the interaction characteristics among incident waves, run-up and internal waterlevel at core layer of breakwaters were investigated. The effect of core materials on the internal waterlevel characteristics are also discussed using the results with both regular and irregular wave tests. The main results obtained are as follows; The higher internal waterleve was observed under the permeable breakwater with core layer of the lower permeability than with the higher one. And, the internal waterlevl decreased as far as the distance from the toe. In the irregular wave test, the grouping characteristics of incident waves make large fluctuation of the waterlevel. Especially, breakwaters internal waterlevel appeared to affect the hydraulic characteristics on slope.

  • The purpose of this study is not only to investigate the effects of air layer in the turbine chamber on the performance and internal flow of the cross-flow turbine, but also to suggest a newly developed air supply method. Field test is performed in order to measure the output power of the turbine by a new air supply method. CFD analysis on the performance and internal flow of the turbine is conducted by an unsteady state calculation using a two-phase flow model in order to embody the air layer effect on the turbine performance effectively. The result shows that air layer effect on the performance of the turbine is considerable. The air layer located in the turbine runner passage plays the role of preventing a shock loss at the runner axis and suppressing a recirculation flow in the runner. The location of air suction hole on the chamber wall is very important factor for the performance improvement. Moreover, the ratio between air from suction pipe and water from turbine inlet is also significant factor of the turbine performance.

  • This study investigates thermal insulation properties of multi layer materials depending on thickness of air layers. Numerical analysis on the heat flow of different insulating materials was conducted to identify whether their temperature distributions demonstrate the reduced rate of heat transfer conclusively or not. Analytical model is divided into two categories. One is to distinguish temperature distribution of the air-layer materials from the non-air layer ones. The other is to compare the efficacy between eight-layered insulating materials with no air-layer contained and three-layered insulating materials which include an air-layer definitely. In the latter case, the identical thickness is assigned to each material. The effect of thermal insulation by including an air-layer is verified in the first analytical model. The result of the second model shows that the insulation of the eight-layered materials is coterminous at the three-layered ones with an air-layer and the thermal insulation of the two materials is imperceptible. The benefits of cost and energy saving are anticipated if air-layers are efficiently incorporated in multi layer insulating materials in a greenhouse.
