A Study on the Characteristics of Boiling Heat Trausfer of Thermosyphon Heat Exchangers with Various Micro Grooves (마이크로 그루브를 가진 열사이폰 열교환기의 비등열전달 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study concerns the characteristics of boiling heat transfer in two-phase closed thermosyphons with various micro grooves. A study was carried out with the performance of the heat transfer of the thermosyphon having 60 internal micro grooves in which boiling and condensation occur. A plain thermosyphon having the same inner and outer diameter as the grooved thermosyphon is also tested for comparison. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluid. The heat flux and the boiling heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator zone are estimated from the experimental results. The experimental results have been assessed and compared with existing correlations. Imura's and Kusuda's correlation for boiling showed in good agreement with experimental results within ${\pm}20{\%}$ in plain thermosyphon.

  • Heat transfer performance of integral-fin tube which is used in recipro turbo refrigerator or high compact heat exchangers is studied. Eight tubes with trapezoidal shaped integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 internal grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same(inner and outer) diameter as the fin tubes is also tested for comparison. Pool boiling heat transfer of R-11 is investigated experimentally and theoretically on single tube arrangement. The refrigerant evaporates at saturation state of 1 bar on the outside tube surface and heat is supplied by not water which circulates inside of the tube. From the result of eight fin tubes and one plain tube tested, a tube having 1299 fpm-30 grooves shows the best performance. A maximum overall heat transfer coefficient of this tube is about 4000 $W/m^{2}K$ at 2.8m/s of water velocity. The maximum heat transfer enhancement (i.e., the ratio of overall heat transfer coefficients of finned to plain tubes)is about 2.1.

  • In this paper, the finite element equations for the time-domain numerical analysis of transient dynamic axisymmetric problems are newly presented. which are based on the equations of motion in convolution integral as in the previous paper. A hollow cylinder subjected to a sudden internal pressure is solved first as a benchmark problem and then the dynamic stress concentrations are analyzed in detail far hollow cylinders having inner and outer circumferential grooves subjected to sudden internal or axial loadings, all the computed results are compared with the existing or the computed ones obtained by using the commercial finite element packages Nastran and Ansys to show the validity and capability of the presented method.

A Fundamental Study on Development of a Rotating Horizontal Heat Pipe (회전식 수평 Heat Pipe의 개발에 관한 기초 연구)

  • When a rotating heat pipe is in operation, liquid condensate returns from the condenser to the evaporator along the inside surface by both components of gravitational and centrifugal forces. It was known that its performance was largely dependent on how to increase the flow rates of condensate and keep the condensate film thickness as thin as possible. Most of research works were focussed on this goal, and various inner wall structures such as tapered wall, stepped wall or coil inserted pipe etc. were developed. In the present study, a stepped wall structure with 3 internal grooves in the condenser and adiabatic zone was examined. For this system, the condensate would flow down to the evaporator through the grooves, resulting a reduced film thickness over the condenser surface. Experimental data showed an enhancement of heat transfer coefficient in the condenser zone. An analytical solution to the condensate film thickness showed that the analytically calculated values of heat transfer coefficient were considerably higher than the experimental data.

Experimental study of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for flow of water inside circular smooth and micro-fin tubes (평활관 및 미세휜관 내에서의 물을 이용한 열전달 및 압력강하 특성에 관한 실험)

  • Heat transfer and pressure drop for single phase flow of water in circular smooth and micro-fin tubes are measured. Copper tubes of 9.52 and 7mm outer diameter were used. The internal roughness in micro-fin tubes was formed by spiral grooves having $25^{\circ}$ helx angle, 0. 12mm fin height and 0.454mm pitch in 9.52mm tubes; $18^{\circ}$ helix angle, 0.15mm fin height and 0.322mm pitch in 7mm tubes. The measured friction factor and heat transfer coefficient are compared with relevant previous works, and the correlations for micro-fin tube are developed.

  • During the overhaul period of nuclear power plants in Korea, an ROV(Remotely Operated Vehicle) enters the cold-leg pipes connected with the reactor to examine the state of the thermal sleeves and their positions in the safety injection nozzles. To measure the positions of the thermal sleeves or scratches with video images recorded during the examination, time-varying camera parameters should be known, such as the focal length and principal points used for the capturing each video image. In this paper, we propose a camera calibration and measurement scheme by using a single image containing two circular grooves of a cylindrical nozzle whose radius and distance are known.

  • Visualization of internal flow of a regenerative blower has been made by injecting a tracer directly into the flow. For the convenience of visualization, working fluid has been replaced by water and marbling color oil has been used as a tracer. Oil droplet has been injected near the inlet of the blower and the streak has been recorded using a high speed camera with the illumination of high power light sources. At first, droplets have irregular motion in the near inlet area and enter into a groove of the impeller. Then the droplets circulate inside the groove while translated by the rotational motion of the impeller. When the droplets get out of the impeller groove, their speed is lower than that of impeller. And the droplets repeatedly enter into the groove and circulate inside the grooves. Then the droplets either flow to the outlet or reenter into the inlet area through stripper. Through this experimental study, internally circulating motion of the flow inside a regenerative blower has been characterized.

  • Diffuse sclerosing papillary carcinoma(DSPC), a variant of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, is characterized by diffuse involvement of one or both thyroid lobes, and histologic features such as prominent sclerosis, intense lymphocytic infiltrate, numerous psammoma bodies, and squamous metaplasia together with the characteristic cytoarchitectural pattern of classical papillary carcinoma. We experienced a case of fine needle aspiration cytologic(FNAC) findings of DSPC, which was confirmed by histologic examination of the thyroidectomy specimens. The patient was 26 years old female who presented with diffuse firm enlargement of the thyroid gland with enlargement of many cervical lymph nodes. FNAC smears showed numerous psammoma bodies, many lymphocytes, metaplastic squamous cells, absence of stringy colloid, and epithelial cells showing classical features of papillary carcinoma, such as nuclear grooves, intranuclear unclusions, and ground glass chromatin pattern.

Development of low-temperature high-strength integral steel castings for offshore construction by casting process engineering

  • In casting steels for offshore construction, manufacturing integral casted structures to prevent fatigue cracks in the stress raisers is superior to using welded structures. Here, mold design and casting analysis were conducted for integral casting steel. The laminar flow of molten metal was analyzed and distributions of hot spots and porosities were studied. A prototype was subsequently produced, and air vents were designed to improve the surface defects caused by the release of gas. A radiographic test revealed no internal defects inside the casted steel. Evaluating the chemical and mechanical properties of specimens sampled from the product revealed that target values were quantitatively satisfied. To assess weldability in consideration of repair welding, the product was machined with grooves and welded, after which the mechanical properties of hardness as well as tensile, impact, and bending strengths were evaluated. No substantive differences were found in the mechanical properties before and after welding.

  • The diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer is generally based on the findings of intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions and nuclear grooves. Although anisokaryosis and poikilokaryosis, in papillary thyroid cancer, are not distinct when compared to other cancers, cytological examination can provide useful preoperative information. Our study evaluated the diagnostic role of computer-assisted image analysis for the pre-surgical assessment of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid aspirates from twenty female patients who were histologically confirmed to have both papillary carcinoma and benign nodules were studied. Different populations of 50 benign cells and 50 malignant cells were analyzed. Five morphometric parameters were selected for analysis: nuclear area, perimeter, maximum length, maximum width and intensity standard variation. The values obtained for papillary carcinomas were higher than the surrounding benign nodules as follows: nuclear area 63.5 vs. 36.1 (p=0.000), nuclear perimeter were 29.4 vs. 22.0 (p=0.000), maximum length 9.6 vs. 7.1 (p=0.000), maximum width 8.2 vs. 6.3 (p=0.000), the ratio between maximal length and maximal width 1.16 vs. 1.13 (p=0.000), the standard variation of intensity 14.9 vs. 15.9 (p=0.101) respectively. Therefore, morphometric information can be helpful for the differential cytological diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma.
