  • In the development of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) for high-speed operation, the problem of mechanical stress of the rotor by centrifugal force becomes more essential as the speed and size of the machines increase. In this paper, the optimal design process combined with mechanical stress analysis was presented. In the analysis of mechanical stress, the node and element data obtained by the electromagnetic field analysis program are also used in the stress analysis. Therefore, the different pre-processing for the stress analysis program is no longer required. Therefore, the computing time of the new method is very short compared with the conventional approach, and when repeated analyzes of various models are required, this method is very useful. The validity of our methods was verified by comparing simulation results with conventional and experimental data.

  • In this paper, we present a comparative analysis of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSM) and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM). First, we use 2D finite element analysis (FEA) to analyze models satisfying the same rated conditions according to the torque-speed curve characteristics, which are determined from the operating conditions. Next, we manufacture an SPMSM and IPMSM having good performances from an electromagnetic perspective based on analysis results, namely the cogging torque, torque ripple, and efficiency. We analyze both of the manufactured machines when they are connected back-to-back and when they are used as a motor and a generator, respectively. The motor is driven by a commercial inverter and the generator is connected to a three-phase resistance load bank. Finally, based on experimental results, which include the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the back electro-motive force (EMF), cogging torque, efficiency, and mass, we determine the motor that is most suitable under requirements.

  • An inductance measurement method for interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) is proposed in this paper. In this method, the motor is measured at standstill condition, and only a 3-phase voltage source, an oscilloscope and a DC voltage source are required. Depending on the deductive dq-axis voltage equations in the stationary frame of reference, the dq-axis inductances at different current magnitude and vector angle can be calculated by the measured 3-phase voltages and currents. And hence, the saturation and cross-magnetizing effect of the inductances are measurable. This paper introduces the principle equations, experiment setup, data processing, and results comparison on the concentrated-winding and distributed-winding IPMSMs.

  • This paper presents a comparative study on motor characteristics with specific consideration of radial vibration force in interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) according to pole/slot combinations. Three IPMSM models, 16-pole/15-slot design, 16-pole/18-slot design and 16-pole/24-slot design are built, in which 16-pole/15-slot and 16-pole/18-slot designs provide high winding factor and 16-pole/24-slot design is known as a general pole/slot combination. By coupling finite element analysis (FEA) with equivalent circuit method, motor characteristics, back electro-motive force (Back-EMF), inductances, cogging torque, etc. as well as machine output performances are analyzed and compared. The radial vibration force (RVF) distribution in air gap causing stator vibration and noise is interested. It is expected that this study help with appropriate choice of pole/slot combination in IPMSM design.

  • A new flux-weakening scheme for an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) is proposed. This control scheme enables the maximum torque operation for the fast acceleration in the constant power region according to the current and voltage limit condition. Especially the dynamic performance of the braking in the flux-weakening region is improved with the compensation of the stator resistance. Also since the onset of the flux weakening operation is adjusted according to the load conditions, the machine parameters, and whether motoring or braking region, the stable and precise transition operation into or out of the flux weakening region can be achieved. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through experiments with an IPMSM drive system.

  • In the case of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), it is important to know the accurate machine parameters in the design step. In particular, d- and q- axis inductance are expected to have ripple characteristics, due to the mechanical structure and the degree of magnetic saturation. In this paper, this feature is expressed as inductance variation. Inductance variation of the IPMSM is calculated with finite element analysis, and the reason for inductance variation is identified. Finally the validity of this paper is verified by the comparison with the experimental results.

  • We propose an interior permanent magnet syhchronous motor (IPMSM) with arc-shape ferrite permanent magnets (PMs) as a substitute for the rare-earth permanent magnet, and determine its optimal design through parametric study. First, we use 2D finite element analysis to analyze 4-poles and 6-slots initial model according to performance requirements and design parameters. The current angle of the maximum average torque considered in the analysis is different compared with the current angle of the minimum torque ripple. Thus, the parametric study for optimal rotor design is performed by varying the thickness and the offset radius of the PMs according to current angle. In particular, a narrow bridge is required in conventional IPMSM for reducing flux leakage; however, the increase in cogging torque in the analysis model saturates the narrow bridge (large offset radius). Therefore, we suggest an appropriate shape considering limiting conditions such as DC link voltage, average torque, torque ripple, and cogging torque taking into account performance requirements.

  • A novel flux-weakening scheme for the Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) is proposed. This is implemented based on the output of the synchronous PI current regulator-reference voltage to the PWM inverter. Attractive features of this flux weakening scheme include no dependency on the machine parameters, the guarantee of current regulation at any operating condition, and smooth and fast transition into and out of the flux weakening mode without a discontinuity. Experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed control scheme.

  • A control approach for the sensorless speed control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) based on adaptive integral the binary is proposed. With a main loop regulator and an auxiliary loop regulator, the binary observer has a property of the chattering alleviation in the constant boundary layer. However, the width of the constant boundary limits the steady state estimation accuracy and robustness. In order to improve the steady state performance of the binary observer, the binary observer is formed by adding extra integral augmented switching the hyperplane equation. By mean of integral characteristics, the rotor speed can be finely estimated and utilized for a sensorless speed controller for IPMSM. The proposed adaptive integral binary observer applies an adaptive scheme, because the parameters of the dynamic equations such as the machine inertia or the viscosity friction coefficient is not well known and these values can be easily changed generally during normal operation. Therefore, the observer can overcome the problem caused by using the dynamic equations, and the rotor speed estimation is constructed by using the Lyapunov function. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

  • Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) have gained an increasing popularity in recent years for a variety of industrial applications, because of their high power density, high efficiency and possibility of flux weakening operation. Because the efficiency of IPMSM is one of the important performance characteristic, the Maximum Torque Per Ampere(MTPA) operating method has been indispensible. In theory, MTPA operating point can be calculated using the exact values of the machine parameters. However, the values of the IPMSM parameters are known to vary widely according to the operating condition. Therefore, to operate the IPMSM in the MTPA operating point, the machine parameters should be estimated in real-time. In this paper, the new MTPA operating method based on the signal injection is presented. By injecting the high frequency current signal, the MTPA operating criteria can be calculated by measuring the input power to IPMSM. The proposed method can find the MTPA operating point with simple signal processing regardless of the parameter variation.
