A modified interfacial heat transfer correlation between a dispersed water droplet and ambient superheated steam is proposed and compared with available experimental data and other correlations. Modified one overcomes the inherent deficiencies of Lee and Ryley's interfacial heat transfer correlation that ignored the effects of steam superheating which can not be neglected especially in the reflood situation of a loss-of-coolant accident. Modified one is represented by (equation omitted) In the present correlation the effect of possible subcooling of a water droplet is not taken into consideration. Comparison of the above correlation with currently available measurement data for a water droplet in high temperature gas flow shows that the proposed one correlates well with the measurement data where the degree of superheating is negligible and considerable.
An experimental study of steam condensation on a subcooled thick water layer (0.018 ~0.032 m) in a countercurrent stratified flow has been performed using a nearly horizontal circular pipe. A total of 103 average interfacial condensation heat transfer coefficients were obtained and parametric effects of steam and water flow rates and the degree of subcooling on condensation heat transfer were examined. The measured local temperature and velocity distributions in the thick water layer revealed that there was a thermal stratification due to the lack of full turbulent thermal mixing in the lower region of the water layer Two empirical Nusselt number correlations, one in terms of average steam and water Reynolds numbers, and the water Prandtl number, and the other in terms of the Jakob number in place of the Prandtl number, which agree with most of the data within $\pm$ 25%, were developed based on the bulk flow properties. Comparisons of the present data with existing correlations showed that the present data were significantly lower than the values predicted by existing correlations.
A simplified heat transfer model for the cooling capability of the AP 600 PCCS is proposed I this paper. As the PCCS domain is covered with very thin and long water film, it is phenomenologically divided into 3 regions; water entrance effect region, asymptotic region, and air entrance effect region. As the length of the asymptotic region is estimated to be over 90% of the whole domain, the phenomena in the asymptotic region is focused. Using the analogy between heat and mass transfer phenomena in a turbulent situation, a new dependent variable combining temperature and vapor mass fraction was defined. The similarity between the PCCs phenomena in the asymptotic region and the buoyant air flow phenomena on a vertical heated plate is derived. Using the similarity, the simplified heat transfer correlations for the interfacial heat fluxes and the ratios of latent heat transfer to sensible heat transfer were established. To verify the accuracy of the correlation, the results of this study were compared with those of other numerical analyses performed for the same configuration and they are well within the range of 15% difference.
Rapid development of electronic technology requires small size, high density packaging and high power of electronic devices, which result in more heat generation by the electronic system. Present cooling technology may not be adequate for the thermal management in the current state-of-the-art electronic equipment. Forced convective heat transfer in a channel filled with pin-fin array is studied experimentally in this paper as an alternative cool-ing scheme for a high heat-dissipating equipment. Various configurations of the pin-fin array are selected in order to find out the effect of spacing and diameter of the pin-fin on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. In the low porosity region, interfacial heat transfer and pressure drop seem to show different trend compared to the conventional heat transfer process.

Liquid film thickness in laminar film condensation for flow over a flat plate generally is so thin that both fluid acceleration and thermal convection within the liquid film can be neglected. An integral solution method is proposed to solve the conjugate problems of laminar film condensation and heat conduction in a solid wall. It is found that approximate solutions of the governing equations involve four physical parameters to describe the conjugate heat transfer problem for laminar film condensation. It is shown that the effects of interfacial shear. mass transfer and local heat transfer are strongly dependent on the thermo-physical properties of the working fluids and the Jacob number.

The interfacial thermal resistance of pristine and defective carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in low-density polyethylene matrix is studied in this paper. Interface thermal resistance in nanosystems is one of the most important factors that lead to the large variation in thermal conductivities in literature and the novelty of this paper lies in the estimation of the interfacial thermal resistance for defective nanotubes-systems. Thermal properties of CNT nanostructures are estimated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the simulations were carried out for various temperatures by rescaling the velocities of carbon atoms in the nanotube. This paper also deals with the mesoscale thermal conductivities of composite systems, using effective medium theories by considering the size effect in the form of interfacial thermal resistance and also using the conventional micromechanical methods like Hashin-Shtrikman bounds and Wakashima-Tsukamoto estimates.

The micro plated heat exchangers were designed to transfer more heat/volume or mass than previous heat exchangers within the context of the design constraints specified. The increase of the surface-to-volume ratio results in an increase of the interfacial area. This enhances considerably the performance of a heat exchanger. This can be an important component in a wide range of applications fuel cell, aerospace, automotive, electronic system and home heating, etc). In this study, the performance evaluation of micro plated heat exchangers under the counter flows with straight and S-shaped channel are carried out. The pressure drop as well as inlet and outlet fluid temperature were measured at steady state under various operating conditions and the total heat transfer rate were also calculated.
The presence of a non-condensable gas can considerably reduce the level of condensation heat transfer. The non-condensable gas effect is a primary concern in some passive systems used in advanced design concepts, such as the Passive Residual Heat Removal System (PRHRS) of the System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor (SMART) and the Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) of the Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (SBWR). This study examined the capability of the Multi-dimensional Analysis of Reactor Safety (MARS) code to predict condensation heat transfer in a vertical tube containing a non-condensable gas. Five experiments were simulated to evaluate the MARS code. The results of the simulations showed that the MARS code overestimated the condensation heat transfer coefficient compared to the experimental data. In particular, in small-diameter cases, the MARS predictions showed significant differences from the measured data, and the condensation heat transfer coefficient behavior along the tube did not match the experimental data. A new method for calculating condensation heat transfer coefficient was incorporated in MARS that considers the interfacial shear stress as well as flow condition determination criterion. The predictions were improved by using the new condensation model.
