Effects of pH, Alkalinity, Chloride Ion on the Copper Pipe Corrosion (동관에서 pH, 알칼리도, 염소이온이 부식에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the effects of pH, alkalinity, and chlorine ion which are important water quality impact factors to the corrosion in the simulated distribution system where the copper pipe is affixed. The result shows that pitting index was increased as the alkalinity and chloride ion increase in the distilled water, but there was no relation to pH. Actually the uniform corrosion rate was decreased as the pH increase with the laboratory tap water. In conclusion, it is necessary to control the pH which stands above minimum 7.5 to prevent pitting corrosion in the copper pipe. Consequently, comprehensive research about the effect of lime soda($Ca(OH)_2$) which was used as a coagulation additive in the water treatment plant to pipe corrosion must be accomplished additionally.

  • In this study, composite materials were put to dry interfacial treatment by use of plasma technology. It has been presented that the optimum parameters for the best wettability of the samples at the time of generation of plasma were oxygen atmosphere, 0.1 torr of system Pressure, 100 W of discharge power, and 3 minutes of discharge time. The decrease in surface potential of charged samples by corona discharge indicates that the amount of accumulated electrical charges reduces and the charges that have been injected lessen rapidly when the duration of UV irradiation increases. The surface resistivity and the tensile strength of plasma treated samples, a longer UV irradiation time resulted in decreased insulation.

  • In this study, epoxy/mica composite was prepared by mixing with mechanical stirrer together with homogenizer, and the effect of amino-type silane coupling agent was also studied. To reduce the viscosity without any decrement of other properties, 1,4-Butanediol diglycidyl ether (1,4-BDGE) as an aliphatic epoxy reactive diluent was introduced to the epoxy/mica composite in order to use as vanish for high voltage motor and generator stator winding. It was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation that interfacial characteristics between organic epoxy and inorganic mica was modified by coupling agent treatment so that glass transition temperature increased, and tensile strength and electrical breakdown strength increased. The properties were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis and the ac electrical breakdown strength was 20.2% modified by treating silane coupling agent.

  • Popcorn cracking phenomena frequently occur in thin plastic packages during the solder reflow process, which are definitely affected by poor adhesion of Cu-based leadframe to epoxy molding compounds (EMCs). In the present work, in order to enhance the adhesion strength, a brown-oxide treatment on the Cu-based leadframe was carried out and the adhesion strength of leadframe/EMC interface was measured in terms of fracture toughness by using sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens. After the adhesion tests, fracture surfaces were analyzed by SEM, AES, EDS and AFM to make the failure path clear. Results showed that failure path was closely related to the oxidation time and the interfacial fracture toughness.

  • Wood powders were surface-modified by plasma-treating propylene to make them compatible with PP matrix in WPC(wood powder composite). The plasma treatment of propylene resulted in the deposition of an ultrathin hydrophobic film which had the chemical structure similar to that of polypropylene. Wood powder and polypropylene were mixed to pellets by twin screw extruder and then 50 wt% wood powder/PP composites were produced by an injection machine. Tensile strength and flexural strength were improved by 7.59% and 12.43% at the maximum respectively. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observation on the fracture surface revealed that the treatment improved the interfacial bonding and the mechanical properties of the composites.

  • Carbon materials are mainly used as catalyst supports for polymer exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Catalyst supports are required specific characteristics of the carbon materials, such as large surface area and high electrical conductivity. Attempted were to improve electrical conductivity and to maintain high surface area of carbon materials using a microwave treatment. Microwave treatment, as a relatively new technique, takes short reaction time and reduce the consumption of the gases used for carbon treatment compared to a traditional heat treatment. Hybrid carbon (ACF/Graphene) as catalyst supports by microwave-irradiation method for PEMFC increase the cell performance because of increased electrical conductivity resulting in triple-phase contact and reduced the interfacial resistance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) were employed to analyze carbon materials. The performance of microwave-treated carbon materials was evaluated by measuring current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and electrode impedance.

  • For the treatment of the dye wastewater, a polyamide nano-composite membrane and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were prepared using interfacial polymerization technique, in which piperazine, meta-phenylene diamine, and trimesoyl chloride were used as monomers, Their permselective properties were characterized with aqueous solutions of PEG 600, $Na_2SO_4$, and NaCl, and their performance was compared with that of Osmonics Co, They were found to be a typical nano-composite membrane and a low pressure RO membrane. Using them, a real dye wastewater supplied from the Kyungin Corporation, one of the domestic dye producer, was treated, studying the separation performances of the membranes, Also, during the wastewater treatment, cleaning in place (CIP) of the membranes was carried out regularly to recover the flux of the membranes. Three different chemical cleaners were employed for the CIP process and their performance were compared in this study.

  • It has been reported that plasma treatments are used to modify surface properties of polymers such as adhesivity hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity. Using plasma treatment, interfacial pro-perty can be introduced to a polymer surface without affecting the desired bulk properties of a material. In this study, commercial polyamide66 (PA66) /polyphenylene (PPE) polymer was modified by plasma treatment under a various gas specious for elimination of organic compound and polymer surface property with hvdrophilicity. PA66/PPE polymer with hydrophilicity was treated by RF plasma vacuum system under a various parameter such as gas specious, processing time and partial pressure. Hydrophilicity of PA66/PPE was confirmed by calculation of the surface free energy from contact angle measurement. The highest surface free energy of $50.03 mJ/m^2$ with the lowest contact angle of $14^{\circ}$ was obtained at plasma process power of 100 W, treatment time of 2 min and $Ar/O_2$ gases of 100 and 200 sccm. Moreover the change of organic compounds on the polymer surface was analyzed by fourier transforms infrared spectrometry (FTIR).

  • Single treatment and staged treatments in vertical wells are widely applied in sandstone and mudstone thin interbedded (SMTI) reservoir to stimulate the reservoir. The keys and difficulties of stimulating this category of formations are to avoid hydraulic fracture propagating through the interface between shale and sand as well as control the fracture height. In this paper, the cohesive zone method was utilized to build the 3-dimensional fracture dynamic propagation model in shale and sand interbedded formation based on the cohesive damage element. Staged treatments and single treatment were simulated by single fracture propagation model and double fractures propagation model respectively. Study on the changes of fracture vicinity stress field during propagation is to compare and analyze the parameters which influence the interfacial induced stresses between two different fracturing methods. As a result, we can prejudge how difficult it is that the fracture propagates along its height direction. The induced stress increases as the pumping rate increasing and it changes as a parabolic function of the fluid viscosity. The optimized pump rate is $4.8m^3/min$ and fluid viscosity is $0.1Pa{\cdot}s$ to avoid the over extending of hydraulic fracture in height direction. The simulation outcomes were applied in the field to optimize the treatment parameters and the staged treatments was suggested to get a better production than single treatment.

  • Plasma treatment is frequently used to increase surface functionality and surface activity. It enables to improve various surface properties such as catalytic selectivity, printability, and interfacial adhesion between various materials. Surface or the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is exposed under an atmospheric pressure plasma torch (APPT), generated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), and the treated surfaces are systemically investigated. Argon, air, and oxygen are used as a processing gas. Properties of the treated EVA surfaces are investigated by the zeta-potential measurements and surface free energies. It is shown that the plasma treatment leads to a drastic increase of surface functional groups of EVA, as the increase of its adhesion energy ($G_{IC}$). Therefore, it is concluded that the APPT process is an effective means to improve adhesion of EVA and polyurethane (PU).
